We do a game at Christmas where instead of presents, we do useful gifts in bags for people to win. Things like mango slicers, those cards that double up as ice scrapers, that sort of thing.

Have you bought anything surprisingly useful that you use more than you thought you would that cost under £30 please? I really need some ideas this year!

Rice cooker.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/11/2024 17:55

These tea towels incredibly absorbent, really big

Contigo Byron mug best thermal mug I've had, by miles. Often £10 in Tesco, loads of colours on Amazon

These mugs feel great to hold and the shape keeps drinks warm for ages

Packing cubes - bought some earlier in the year from Ikea for £2.50, have since upgraded to sturdier ones.https://shop.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/os-packing-cubes/?sku=5031863991247&gadsource=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD5LHoA7Nfjqj4-FIzxfLYkgifCio&gclid=CjwKCAiAl4a6BhBqEiwAqvrquhhNiuoKCw5VtSvewV5PJJ8m2BBDrMrzjFyNCXsyq0opRF6nzDBoC6eUQAvD_BwE These are great for outdoorists!

I treated myself to a proper Swiss Army knife last year and have used it so much, from filling my nails to using the scissors to open sachets of sauce in the pub and the tweezers for splinters plus lots of other things, dh and the kids laughed when I bought it but they're always asking to borrow it.
They also do a card which is handy to keep in your purse, there's a sale on too.

Picked up a pen that doubles as a spirit level and has a reqlly useful little screwdriver at the end. Got it in poundland of all places, last year. It is the most useful item we own! Lives in our kitchen pen pot and is amazing for all those little screws in battery packs and the like so we dont have to get the screwdrivers out of the diy cupboard. Actually look it on holiday with us and was oddly handy.

I am not sure is this counts as useful exactly but Iwas looking for a way to stop using lots of plastic for hand soap (as in dispensers) but really didn't like bar soap as in my opinion it always gets soggy or you are always having to clean the soap dish, even if it drains. So I got two of these:

I have one in the bathroom upstairs and one above the kitech sink. They work really well and have stuck to the tile even in a damp bathroom environment with no problem. They have metal ones if you prefer them to wood

I love them and they work really well

I really like that idea. Thank you

No, why, was this on there? I hope so!

haha yes! Definitely watch 😀

MitochondriaUnited · 23/11/2024 18:16

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads fully agree with you re the ravel mug.

They’re nearly too good at keeping the heat. I’ve burnt myself drinking several hours after filling it 😂

MadameBethune · 23/11/2024 18:17

Fingerless gloves - at home, or to wear over other gloves, etc
Decent tweezers from Tweezerman
Enough phone charging cables to have one in every convenient place - by the sofa, in the kitchen, next to the bed etc. And long enough.

Letmegohome · 23/11/2024 18:18

Electric hot water bottle (amazon/dunelm etc) under £20 charge quickly stay hot/warm for ages (can be shoved up your jacket when leaving the house!) I love mine, I also have a heated throw but my dogs like to snuggle up so I can have that on hot, the water bottle is compact enough that it's heating me not them .

DreamyMe · 23/11/2024 18:18

Asda Hairdryer £12.

KenAdams · 23/11/2024 14:44

These are brilliant keep them coming.

I own a few myself. Can highly recommend the koala belt water bottle BUT I've just bought a heating and tens pad which is amazing and was only about £12 so I've been using that instead as it's quite lightweight.

Could you please link your tens thingy?

Letmegohome · 23/11/2024 18:20

Long handled teaspoons.

Silicone pastry mat

What do you use the long handled teaspoons for?

WolfFoxHare · 23/11/2024 18:22

Beanie hat with a rechargeable light. Bought as a stocking filler for DH several years ago, still used every time he had to put the bins out or go to the garage or shed at night.

MooFroo · 23/11/2024 18:25

Pixiedust1234 · 23/11/2024 14:23

Electric rechargeable hot water bottle. No more boiling kettles and hoping the steam doesn't get your hand.

Didn’t know this was a thing - thank you!

paristotokyo · 23/11/2024 18:30

Swiss card thing

Bandol · 23/11/2024 18:32

Some Velcro cable ties from Amazon. Small enough to fit in a stocking, less than £5 and life changing to have all your cables around the house and in your chargers pouch all tidy.

theseriousmoonlight · 23/11/2024 18:38

Thank you for this thread OP! I've just got DP a rechargeable hot water bottle, a tyre inflator and tube squeezer. He's so difficult to buy for but will use and love all of of those.

My contribution is a wallet tool - basically a credit card size tool kit which does loads. But don't leave it in your wallet going through airport secure as they will confiscate it...
