In the state of florida, apparently, they have literally taken book banning in schoos at an amazing level.
If you read the article, it even suggests they are banning classics by tom sawyer, is that because they don't want slavery and issues around that being taught?
The lady who wrote handmaid's tale book has been banned to.
This js like what Hitler did and all you lot that go oh well kids shouldn't be taught lgbt stuff if yiu look it's not just them books that are going this is terrible.

They definitely don't value free speech!

Littlemissgobby · 14/11/2024 07:57

American classics such as Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain are among those that have been pulled. Contemporary novels by bestselling authors such as Margaret Atwood and Stephen King have also been removed.
None of them books have anything to do with lgbt so what the hell

I don't know about this story but the left in America and here really don't have any high ground on the free speech thing given the effort they have put into banning, silencing and cancelling any views they do not agree with.

We really can't regard ourselves as mature democracies if we aren't prepared to tolerate, listen to and engage with views we don't agree with.

BTW OP, where I live the libraries won't stock gender critical books. So you know, book banning by public libraries is alive and well here in the UK thanks to the self-identified progressive left.

The political spectrum isn't a straight line, it's a horseshoe. The far right and the far left are so close they're almost touching.

I don't agree with book banning but should the library stock books like mein kampf racist stuff. I am all for people being gender critical I don't agree with that i support trans people but if the boys are saying we should eradicate trans peope then that would be very problematic but I guess uts free speech but that comes with responsibility

She's talking about the right; people who spend their lives shouting about free speech and then think it's fine to ban books and gay people holding hands. 😅

Littlemissgobby · 14/11/2024 08:07

They have banned 1984 because uts exactly what the republicans are doing to Americans.
Banned clockwork orange what we view as dystopia future they love it

That's not what being gender critical means.

If the political left hadn't succeeded in stifling gender critical free speech to the extent that they have, I daresay you'd understand what it means.

Arguably, The Handmaid's Tale is what the Republicans are doing to Americans and 1984 is what the Democrats are doing to Americans.

Happyinarcon · 14/11/2024 08:13

It’s difficult to work out whether the books have been pulled predominantly from primary schools or high schools. If it’s a bunch of Stephen king novels getting pulled from middle schools than I’m ok with that for example.

Obviously I don't agree with that.

JK Rowling has strong views about book banning, having been cancelled by both the right and the left.

But you know, like everything in life, there isn't everything that's black and white and gender critical is a spectrum. I say that because I can read perfectly. Acceptable views that are just a little bit worried about them.Hurting women, two other views claim their gender critical that want to eradicate trans people

Florida has a law that means parents can challenge the books available to their children in schools on grounds of not being appropriate due to sexual material, abuse, drug use etc. The books are removed until someone qualified deems them appropriate for the school age group.

It's nothing to do with lgb or wanting to turn the USA into some dystopian society.

I haven't seen anyone who self describes as gender critical and says they want to eradicate trans people.

If you believe that female people should be entitled to have a word for themselves and some single sex spaces and sports, and that children shouldn't be undergoing medical transition, you have gender critical beliefs. The only people who say gender critical means wanting to eradicate trans people are trans activists.

That's an absolutely batshit law.

No offence but every time I've seen someone moan about "book banning" in the USA/UK and comparing it to nazi Germany it's always turned out to be really weird books banned from primary schools or the kids section of the library

Would you let your kid read fifty shades of grey? I was a smart kid and I read books a lot more fucked up than that and I probably shouldn't have

Have you read the article? Tell me why would tom sawyer be removed, 1984 I studied that at school, the importance of being earnest was studied by other class so I don't know why any of them would be banned

The book banning is a disgrace and many of them are targeted at modern children’s books authored Black and POC authors and nothing necessarily to do with trans issues although those ones are always used to excuse this madness .

I know many of these authors and it’s been financially damaging for them as schools then don’t /can’t invite them on school visits. Some states also essentially don’t want slavery taught or have a very watered down version of what happened.

Apparently they don’t research on this and it was a very small group of white women in America responsible for a large number of book bans. I’ll try find the article.

She did tell you, very clearly. They have been removed because some crank of a parent has complained. It wasn’t us. You cannot come into a uk forum and blame the participants for anything at all that happens in Florida.
