Twitter is basically Truth Social now

My 'Following' tab is dead because everyone interesting has left.

My 'For you' tab is full of Elon Musk's prolific blithering and other right wing shit, and AI bots commenting on posts generated by AI bots.

Given Musk's exceptionally prominent role in Trump's new government, is it appropriate for UK politicians to be posting on there? I don't think they'd use Truth Social.

Such a shame, it used to be great.

I might try Bluesky in that case.

MrsKwazi · 13/11/2024 21:38

So many accounts I follow on facebook has posted that they have deactivated Twitter and can be found on Bluesky. Sciency/Geology type accounts.

noblegiraffe · 13/11/2024 21:40

It does seem like most of the people I used to follow have gone to BlueSky as well. Is it just like Twitter but not shit then?

I've closed my account. Bluesky and Threads much nicr.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/11/2024 21:42

It was never great loans Elon musk has always been in control. I only have to find out about train delays.

Folkwhore · 13/11/2024 21:43

Bluesky is basically Twitter pre X

I used to love Twitter but deleted my account a while ago. I didn't leave in a strop but it became tedious to try and navigate. Everything clogged up with responses from blue tick Musk superfans with 37 followers.

Yeah I did the same. You'd search for something and half the feed would be spam or adverts or something unrelated. It just became annoying to use.

INeedAnotherName · 13/11/2024 21:46

Following with interest. Never been on Twitter but I'm finding an increasing need to contact businesses on SM as they seem to hide their contact info on websites now. Are a lot of mainstream businesses going over to Bluesky as well?

TheCompactPussycat · 13/11/2024 21:48

The academic community is moving rapidly to Bluesky.now that Twitter/X is so shit.

imip · 13/11/2024 21:49

Just checked my very neglected Twitter account and this is true.how do I actually delete it. Do I just delete the app or can you close your account?

Yes definitely.

ParisGellerFTW · 13/11/2024 21:53

I think it's funny that the people stropping off because it isn't a leftwing echo chamber any more are also the same people who were thrown into some sort of existential crisis by Trump winning.

Sorry people who don't agree with you are allowed to talk, I guess? But off you trot to your new echo chamber where you're nice and safe from dissent until the next election comes along and shocks you. And a pp thinks POLITICIANS should also flee to an echo chamber? That's unbelievably stupid.

Silencing people doesn't make them change their minds, you know.

So you actually want to see Elon Musk tweeting flattering AI generated pictures of himself with Donald Trump or spreading conspiracy theories about vaccines? Or tweets about how the Muslims are taking over “Londonistan”? Because I’m not particularly keen on that sort of thing. Is that what you’re there for?

But it looks like its exactly what X is doing nowadays, have you read people's post? Having right wing bullshit/ porn/ conspiracy/ AI baiting rubbish shoved down their throats even when they show no interest in it while blocking/ making invisible everything else that's not approved by Musk. There is literally no room left for civilized discussion on there, that's why people are leaving.

potatocakesinprogress · 13/11/2024 22:02

I thought everyone decent left Twitter when Musk first bought it, all my friends did.

Mastodon and Threads also popular with ex-Twitter users.

Have you seen the Austrian Airlines image about them leaving? It's brill.

SableOrGules · 13/11/2024 22:04

I've not stropped off. I used Twitter (and other social media) to connect with other people in the same occupation as me around the world, share info, talk about common interests, share information. I was not following political accounts. Twitter used to be great for that but recently they've changed their algorithm so I was seeing a lot of stuff of no interest bit stuff they thought I'd be interested in. Which I wasn't.

biscuitandcake · 13/11/2024 22:08

SabreIsMyFave · 13/11/2024 20:34

All I see is hate for Israel on Twitter/X. (Not Muslims,) And hate for anyone who isn't far left politically. And hate for JK Rowling.

Algorithm bubbles. I think it's deliberate both for people getting excessively hateful right wing content channeled to them and excessively hateful left wing content. That's long been a problem with all sorts of social media (anger = engagement = happy algorithm) . But on X I really do think at this point it's deliberate on a whole other level.

Thatcastlethere · 13/11/2024 22:11

The only good thing left about it is that you can find more detail regarding news stories or detail that they haven't been able to print in the press dye to gagging orders or whatever...
But yes it's now mostly just a pit of extreme right wing/libertarian/conspiracy theory nonsense. So you do have to wade thru endless dross to find anything worthwhile.

I’m remembering that I joined Twitter because there were a lot of teachers posting really good resources and discussion about teaching and education. Then people stopped posting resources because people would just bitch about them in the comments, then the teaching discussion got incredibly polarised into prods versus trads. And now I barely see any teaching stuff at all and just a load of depressing crap.

It has been a bit of a boiling frog situation really.

Twitter is pretty weird now and the adverts are truly awful. I started heading to Threads but found that weird in a different way, so am trying BlueSky. A lot of the accounts I used to enjoy on twitter are on bluesky now.

MoodEnhancer · 13/11/2024 22:14

I’m planning to move to Bluesky this weekend. I can’t justify being on Twitter any longer given it may help Musk make money and build influence - and frankly I don’t want to see the extreme right wing ramblings of ignorant fools popping up all the time.

biscuitandcake · 13/11/2024 22:23

I still think the best way to avoid an echo chamber is to talk to people from different walks of life in real life anyway. Social media is great, but I think it gives the false impression that you can somehow really get your finger on the pulse of public opinion more than in real life. You can't. You don't know of what you are seeing is representative of what is being posted or algorithm driven, you don't know if the people posting on the site are representative of the communities they are from, you don't know who people really are anyway.
The false confidence it gave politicians and journalists in the past was quite damaging and made it easy for troublemakers to mislead them. I still like sites like bluesky etc for seeing interesting things/following scientists etc. But it isnt and never will be a bubble escaping device.
And expecting people to keep reading unpleasant content posted by randoms who may or may not be real just to a avoid being on a"left wing echo chamber"is silly.

SableOrGules · 13/11/2024 22:39

One thing I am liking on Bluesky is the "starter packs" which people are putting together, you can search up topics you are interested in and see lots of accounts all interested in that particular topic.

I like the 'Feeds' section as well, you can keep topics seperate from your main timeline
