Is there a phone alert for outdoor clothes drying weather?

Courgettesandonions · 10/11/2024 06:45

Does this exist or does anyone techy know how to set it up? I want to be alerted on my phone if the weather predicts it will be a good day for hanging washing on the line outdoors. Does anyone have an app for this type of thing. I'm on android.
Thanks.

What a great idea!

verycloakanddaggers · 10/11/2024 06:52

Look at the weather forecast in the morning, I don't understand the need for an app.

Met Office is good.

No way! I literally asked my DH if he could make an app for this
I need it and would pay for it
He claims to be a tech genius so...

Yes there is a laundry timer app that uses your local weather to predict drying times and sends alerts

Please get him to make one! To people saying just check the weather forecast, I don't want to have to do this everyday as it's one more thing to think about. I just want something that pops up in the morning on my phone and says it's a good day for doing laundry.

I've just downloaded this one, Laundry Timer. It's so confusing. I can't make head or tail of it.

Would looking out the window not work?

Mlanket · 10/11/2024 07:08

Also the weather forecast frequently gets it wrong!

No because I can't always tell if it's going to rain, and some days are just really damp and bad for drying outdoors, or there's not enough wind.

I'm with PP who says just look at the weather forecast in a morning and work it out

I have one.

It's called my mother. She regularly texts me that is clothes drying weather outside and to step away from the tumble dryer.....she lives 300 miles away 😂

DrivingThePlot · 10/11/2024 07:13

Have you tried the Met Office app? It's pretty accurate for what the weather's doing for the day and you can get location specific weather forecasts. I use it a lot to determine what the weather will be.

Lifestooshort71 · 10/11/2024 07:13

Don't know about a full-day laundry forecast - took Grandson fishing, forecast dry and overcast and we were pissed on from a great height within an hour. I do know that if the path/pavements are damp, then washing won't dry.

verycloakanddaggers · 10/11/2024 07:17

I really am asking this as a genuine question - what do you need that reading the weather forecast doesn't give you?

It is now broken down by hour with likelihood of rain, wind speed and prevailing condition (sunny, cloudy etc). Plus humidity, wind direction etc. It is all there already.

StillAtTheRestaurant · 10/11/2024 07:20

There probably isn't a huge market for such an app, given that people have been successfully drying washing outside for centuries using only their common sense.

notbeenagreatday · 10/11/2024 07:22

Have you seen those canopy dryers - there are lots of products available in Ireland presumably due to the unpredictability of weather - and I like the idea of these as if you have a side passageway you can put it there and then a rotary dryer full of clothes isn't cluttering up the garden

GlassBellJar · 10/11/2024 07:22

I take a quick peek for if rain forecast and then look outside and I work on the basis that if the paving slabs outside are dry, then the moisture is evaporating well and so my washing will dry. 99% of the time this works.

So basically, you want the bbc weather app?!

What does the BBC weather app do?
I just want something to ping up on my phone at around 8.30am to say whether I should put a wash on or not. Basically my problem is that I often forget to do a wash and then by the time it's all piled up I look outside and it's raining. I want to be more organised.

Look at the weather for the week ahead and plan around that?

Spuck · 10/11/2024 07:29

@Courgettesandonions can you not set an alarm for a certain time each am/pm to remind you to check the washing basket? Then stick a load on if necessary. Check to see if bbc weather app could ping up each morning on your phone (not sure if that is a feature). Also might be worth investing in a heated airer for colder months? Although have heard mixed reviews on them.

LivingOnTheVeg · 10/11/2024 07:30

There’s an app called IFTTT (if this then that) that lets you set up custom triggers. You can set it so your phone gets a notification if it’s going to rain tomorrow, or the weather drops below a version temperature etc. It looks like you might need the paid version to set up multi-queries, i.e. if it’s above a certain temperature AND not raining. But you might be able to get what you need out of it. It’s a fun little app to play with anyway. 🙂

Gingerkittykat · 10/11/2024 07:30

Ask Alexa.

Alexa will it rain today? It gives a percentage chance of rain and what time rain is expected.

I was amused that Alexa predicted the time of rain with a couple of minutes accuracy but I expect it also gets it wrong sometimes.

But surely the app would be based on the weather forecast?

Wouldnt work where I live. By the sea, micro climate. Sunny one minute then chucking it down. I hate laundry roulette.

TheMoonismadeofcheese · 10/11/2024 07:43

I used one for a while but found it generally useless. I can’t remember what it was called. The weather forecasts are totally unreliable too.
