Is there a phone alert for outdoor clothes drying weather?

Courgettesandonions · 10/11/2024 06:45

Does this exist or does anyone techy know how to set it up? I want to be alerted on my phone if the weather predicts it will be a good day for hanging washing on the line outdoors. Does anyone have an app for this type of thing. I'm on android.
Thanks.

Are we not in danger of dumbing down society ? Its starting to get embarrassing how much people rely on being told what to do instead of using their own brain and common sense.

No I don't think so. I know my own foibles and how easy it is to miss a spell of dry weather. The climate in this country is notoriously erratic. I have a lot of other things to be spending my brain cells on.

@notbeenagreatday 🤣 I have the same 'type' of mother, except she texts saying "Channel 5 Xxx NOW" like I don't have the same access to TV schedules as she does, and that everything can be 'caught up' and I only watch YouTube these days anyway.

Same! She even texts me news alerts like I don't get them on my own phone 😂

OP i'm the same as you, i can look at the weather forecast but that doesn't tell me whether i can dry laundry as I don't know which conditions are best for laundry drying beyond is it raining/sunny. So something specific that says whether laundry will dry is really useful

Do have a look at this link. Best I've found so far. You can obviously change the location.

I think I'm done for the winter. Didn't see a single patch of sky last week, just grey, fine mist. Blue sky this morning, but it's also drizzling. I was hoping to put the sheets out, but there's no point.

Ooh this tells me ideal weather tomorrow, must remember that later! Does it do notifications / alerts though?

TroysMammy · 10/11/2024 09:19

I would like someone to invent something in reverse. You put your clothes out because it's dry but if there is threat of rain some kind of umbrella will open up over your clothes dryer so they don't get wet. Big enough for you to get under and stay dry whilst you unpeg them to bring them in. A type of mechanism like a convertible car has.

Stickytreacle · 10/11/2024 09:49

My washing machine app tells me if it's likely to rain when I start a programme, but it just uses local weather forecasts, so can be wrong.
'If the paths are dry, give it a try' is my motto, you can be caught out app or not!

ByMerryKoala · 10/11/2024 09:52

I'd like an Alexa alert if it starts raining outside so I can bring the washing in. No more of the stealthy drizzle fucking up the washing please.

Unfortunately I don't think it does alerts. I'm just going to set it as my homepage.

Basically my problem is that I often forget to do a wash and then by the time it's all piled up I look outside and it's raining. I want to be more organised.

Suggest you review the weather every morning and make a decision.
The only answer is to keep on top of it, especually if you need to dry outside.

It will take only a small amount of reading to learn what weather makes it a good day for drying.

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 11/11/2024 08:17

Ask someone with arthritis to send you a text if their joints are aching
Ask someone by the coast to text you on seaweed status (wet or dry)
Ask a farmer to text you when his/her cows lie down

Courgettesandonions · 10/11/2024 06:55

Please get him to make one! To people saying just check the weather forecast, I don't want to have to do this everyday as it's one more thing to think about. I just want something that pops up in the morning on my phone and says it's a good day for doing laundry.

It's that difficult to check the weather forecast? Opening and checking an app will take the same amount of time
You are joking here aren't you? A Monday morning little jolly...

Mlanket · 10/11/2024 07:08

Also the weather forecast frequently gets it wrong!

So why would an app be any more correct????

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 11/11/2024 08:21

StillAtTheRestaurant · 10/11/2024 07:20

There probably isn't a huge market for such an app, given that people have been successfully drying washing outside for centuries using only their common sense.

Ooooh, get you with your radical views!!
Begone, you must be a witch to be able to know the weather by looking outside...!
I am coming for you with a pitchfork and a ducking stool

Courgettesandonions · 10/11/2024 07:26

What does the BBC weather app do?
I just want something to ping up on my phone at around 8.30am to say whether I should put a wash on or not. Basically my problem is that I often forget to do a wash and then by the time it's all piled up I look outside and it's raining. I want to be more organised.

you need more than an app to tell you to do your laundry by the sounds of it

researchers3 · 11/11/2024 08:22

What a great idea op!

🙄 to pp who suggested looking out the window.

The weather is often glorious where I live first thing. Yet by the time I've got to work it's often pissing rain.

saveforthat · 10/11/2024 08:09

It never fails to amaze me how people expect an app for everything nowadays.

You mean you don't have one that reminds you to breathe in and out??
Shame on you - you will be drummed off this site!

Zippedydodah · 11/11/2024 08:28

If the patio slabs are dry/drying then the washing goes out.

KinshipCorner · 11/11/2024 08:32

Blimey, this thread got snarky!

I use an app called 'Hang Washing?'
Someone on MN suggested it.
I find it quite accurate, gives estimated drying times, temperature, humidity, wind speed, cloud cover and rain probability. The location is very accurate, right down to my neighbourhood.
I love it!

If one of these apps were created, it would be based on the met office forecast. So would also be wrong.

Thanks.

Why don't you just look at the Met Office website?
It shows temp, wind speed, chance of precipitation by the day/hour.

That's all you need.

So does the Met Office website.

Mummyratbag · 11/11/2024 08:36

Agree with PP if the ground is dry(ish) and the forecast is 0% chance of rain it's good to go.

LemonSherbertDabs · 11/11/2024 08:37

Surprised no one seems to have heard or uses the Met Office website.

Pop in your location and it tells you all you need.

No need for an app.

Wallywobbles · 11/11/2024 08:39

IFTTT app. You can set up your own alert. It's been possible for well over a decade.
