What makes Badenoch think that Trump would give her the time of day?

Carol Vorderman sums it up well...

I also fall into this category- I don’t actually think he’s much cop.

I am not his biggest fan either, altough he has had some moments of strength (he used to be my MP).But there is a very nasty undercurrent to some of the criticism, same as with Abbott.

BIossomtoes · 06/11/2024 13:41

I’m not going to judge any politician when they’ve only been in power a matter of weeks. I have no idea if he’ll be the worst Foreign Secretary we’ve ever had or the best or - most likely - somewhere in between. My opinion will be based on performance, as yet I don’t have one.

PickAChew · 06/11/2024 13:55

Yep. I'm glad he's not health secretary but I'll wait to judge him by his actions on this one.

ContactNightmare · 06/11/2024 14:04

I think Badenoch was quite interesting as her questions weren’t great. She did something curious which was refer to a free trade agreement with the US that she failed to deliver as business and trade secretary. She was combative but to what end?

Trump is very keen on such a deal. I don’t think he will be bothered if he talks a Labour government or not. So given the tariff issue with Trump, ie 10 pwrcent on all goods worldwide, I can’t imagine how many British officials are currently heading to Washington DC right now. I am guessing a lot.

Lammy will have to be pretty bad to eclipse some of the Foreign Secretaries of the last ten years such as Johnson and Raab.

There was Truss too.

I don’t agree with Lammy on gender issues but the rest of his record is pretty admirable and I agree that a huge part of the criticism against him is based in racism.

Must confess don’t know very much about David Lammy, believe he is very well educated & has strong family links with America maybe that might help in some way?

DuncinToffee · 06/11/2024 18:31

Those close to the foreign secretary say he has also been putting in the leg work for months – including before the election – to get to know and to understand Donald Trump and those around him

How will Keir Starmer, the former north London human rights lawyer, gel with the brash New York billionaire?

To be fair, he wasn't wrong with those comments. Now he just has to form a working relationship with the toddler Trump.

The Trump supporting women on here today have sickened me. I wouldn't want to be in the same room as them or breathe the same air.

I'm trying to work out which of my sofas I dropped my 6 figure salary down because I can't find it anywhere.

Are they all really women though?

BIossomtoes · 06/11/2024 21:13

I’m incredibly naive because I’m shocked people with these views exist.

They now feel emboldened to express them.

I've ended up hiding the women of mumsnet thread. It was awful reading from the start but has reached the point where the pig ks obviously enjoying the wrestling match far too much.

Newsnight just had Piers Morgan. This is the future here. Normalising the abnormal, twisting the facts to suit their narrative.

Fuck it all

Good to see Starmer’s reworking of the ministerial code - much to applaud in this, which has taken some time to emerge, although it’s a shame that details of ministerial meetings are not going to be published monthly - instead still quarterly
