Wtf has the PM of UK got to do with an American citizen. Overreach much.

RIP John Prescott, you were a force to be reckoned with. Gin

Gordon Brown has just paid a very warm tribute to John Prescott on R4. I encourage everyone who is interested in politics to listen to it.

Yes I listened as I drove to work.

It was something quite surreal as he was saying his lovely words and then it started snowing really heavily!

Matt Hancock is on the Covid Inquiry today

Blaming funerals for the spread of Covid Angry

Matt Hancock, "Fnerals are places where people gather.. Deeply emotional.. Come together.. That drove the spread of the virus"

Wanker. 🤬

MN seems to be behaving today. I had a rogue ad that kept freezing it.

Even then -on what grounds was he suggesting he should resign? And why the 3 months ‘grace’ if he’s done something requiring resignation?

Well I for one am relieved! I was concerned that, given that the Musks etc are embracing the line of thought that America should isolate itself from international affairs/ remove itself from "entanglements" (treaties) etc, that that would also include not giving their forthright opinions instruction on things they only just found out about and don't fully understand. But it turns out they are going to keep doing that. Phew!

And in case that looks hypocritical I promise to stop giving my own opinion on American politics when American politics/media/culture stop being rammed down everyone's throats via conventional media and social media (alongside interpretations of random events in other parts of the world spun through a how-can-I-relate-this-to-America-politics-in-the-strangest-way-possible filter).

There isn't much the UK government an do unfortunately. That doesn't mean they are wrong for doing the investigation or trying to cross examine him. But he is completely untouchable and will spin this into him being a hard done by rebel/freedom fighter under attack by the establishment.

DuncinToffee · 21/11/2024 14:21

It's unlikely he will show up

The x-exodus will hurt him a lot more

Agree!
He is also spinning the x-exodus into a freedom of speech issue. Which annoys me immensely. Yes, objectively there is a risk of everyone dividing into echo chambers even more than they do now. But people choosing not to be on his platform is not persecution. Choosing not to listen to someone's shitty poetry about Nietsche is not the same as saying they are not allowed to write shitty poetry about Nietsche.
So annoying.

SerendipityJane · 21/11/2024 14:39

But he is completely untouchable

I humbly suggest that it is unacceptable that someone can operate a business in the UK and not be subject to UK law.

If Musk isn't available then parliament should summon - under power of thumbscrew - anyone resident in the UK who is responsible for X.

Brazil has the right idea.

SerendipityJane · 21/11/2024 14:40

Isn't that what the truth is ? People are leaving X in order to have freedom of speech.

I'm sorry, but that is unacceptable.

Digestives work much better with butter and cheese.

No! Freedom of speech is Elon Musk gets to say whatever he likes and everyone else HAS to listen to him!!! Anything else is as bad as Soviet Russia and basically the exact same as forcing him to live in a Gulag.

Two rich tea biscuits sandwiched together with butter is food of the gods!

I feel for Prescott's family. They'll be feeling a mix of sadness, relief and guilt that they feel relief. Flowers

Any of the dementias are horrific - my mother died as a result of fronto-temporal dementia brought on by a head injury. We were "fortunate" in that it only took her 3 years from diagnosis (which itself was 3 years after her accident from which she appeared to be recovering) to die. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy Sad

I agree. I lost both my parents to dementia. My dad's was Parkinson's related, my mum was full blown Korsakoff's. It's horrific. It's why I have money put aside for a one way to Switzerland. I refuse to put my children through that, and if I get a diagnosis, I'm gone.

I like the idea of a new word - X-odus 😂

itsgettingweird · 21/11/2024 16:02

Pointy my mum always said if she ever got like that the only thing she wanted from us was a one way ticket to Switzerland. When her cancer was killing her slowly and cruelly I was expecting her to make that announcement. I would have respected her decision.

countrygirl99 · 21/11/2024 16:19

Sadly if it's alzheimer's the patient often doesn't recognise that there is anything wrong - they forget all the times they've got confused etc. My mum is 4 years past diagnosis and she had forgotten having a brain scan the day after. She is still convinced she is fine because that's what she remembers. It's really common and very hard to deal with as family.

SerendipityJane · 21/11/2024 16:47

My DM also often said that she'd rather die before going the way of her DM (my DGM) who developed Alzheimers (shortly before her death in 1991 she would ask my Aunt when visiting if she "made it through the bombs alright").

Sadly she developed an aggressive form of vascular dementia and went from compus mentus to catatonic in about 6 months. Eventually she had a fall and broke her hip and no one realised for 3 days as she had no reactions. From there (over 3 months) it was hospital, hip replacement, pneumonia (obviously) "recovery", waiting for discharge to community, death. Not easy to write, less easy to see and a horror to keep.

It would have been her birthday last Sunday, something to keep.

My mum had vascular dementia and I so, so don’t want to go that way. I pray cancer takes me first.
