Meanwhile McFadden on media duty is being asked if Labour should have been nicer to Trump Hmm

Evenstar · 07/11/2024 10:09

Lost you all for a while, we are having a new bathroom which is proving very trying 😩, the cats are safely in the cattery as the room where their trays etc are is being re decorated as well. Dog tax attached instead. So depressed about the American election results 😔

Newsnight just had Piers Morgan. This is the future here. Normalising the abnormal, twisting the facts to suit their narrative.

Fuck it all

He wasn’t even twisting facts. He and the Republican whose name I can’t remember agreed that Trump’s lies are baked in and we shouldn’t believe his hyperbole. This is from his supporters!

I don’t agree with Lammy on gender issues but the rest of his record is pretty admirable and I agree that a huge part of the criticism against him is based in racism.

Why was, and is, a “huge part” of the criticism of Braverman, Kwarteng, Cleverley, Patel, Javid, Sunak, Badenoch and other BAME Tories not racism then?

dontcallmelen · 07/11/2024 11:03

Evenstar I feel your pain we had a complete refurbishment of our bathroom last year, was the longest few weeks ever hope it’s over soon.

DuncinToffee · 07/11/2024 11:27

I can't remember the poster's user name who was worried about the bus ticket prices but Liverpool region have announced they are extending the £2 bus fare cap until September 2025

dontcallmelen · 07/11/2024 11:28

Oh that’s really good news Duncin

I don't think all of the criticism of Lammy is rooted in racism. But I do see posts about him where there is definitely that undercurrent. Same as with any person of colour in the public eye, regardless of their political persuasion. For example I remember that cartoon of Patel in the Guardian, which definitely crossed a line.

cardibach · 07/11/2024 12:02

There's been an interest rate drop. I thought the anti-budget crew said that would definitely not happen now? How strange...

It'll affect interest on pensioners savings so you know it'll be bad news

Where have I said it isn't? I believe I have pointed out racist undercurrents to criticism of those politicians, in fact. Off the top of my head I've definitely expressed concern about the political cartoon depictions of Patel and Badenoch.
Once again you swoop in with scattergun made up bollocks about things posters haven't said .

I’m a pensioner with some savings (employers pension taken early, not state). You are right, of course, anything that happens will be presented as a negative.

Bank of England cuts rates to 4.75% in an 8-1 vote.

Bailey: “likely that rate will continue to fall gradually from here”

Budget adds 0.75% to GDP, 0.3% to inflation (0.5% is you assume fuel duty escalator eventually kicks in).

Unemployment now projected to fall slightly not rise to 4.7%

You said “I agree that a huge part of the criticism against him is based in racism”, which is a wide and general accusation - and a very strong one.

But as you feel the same way about all other black and ME politicians, any criticism of, say, Badenoch we can assume you put down as likely to be because the critic is racist. That will be interesting for these Starmer threads.

BTW, I asked a perfectly civil question.

Saucery · 07/11/2024 12:58

You asked a targeted question implying I don't call out racism when it is directed at Tory politicians. To make up lies about my contributions on this subject, on this thread is not particularly civil. Not responding further, it's boring and nonsensical to argue against goady untruths.

countrygirl99 · 07/11/2024 13:02

Rumbly it's perfectly possible for both black and white politicians to be wrong. I am quite happy to criticise a lit of things some politicians on all sides do/say whatever their race/colour/religion. In fact I'm quite happy to tell you that 1 white party leader I have met socially a few times smells (smoker and boy can't you tell) and appears thinks women (or at least this one) are there purely to take away their empty coffee cup. And as a right winger is convinced anyone who doesn't agree with him is wrong despite that allegedly being a failure of the left.

pointythings · 07/11/2024 13:02

Speaking for myself, I really don't care what ethnicity someone is. The issue with Badenoch, Braverman, Patel, Kwarteng and to a slightly lesser degree Cleverly is that they are right wing Tories, and it is their beliefs and policy ideas that I object to. I object to Sunak because he was a weak party leader who pandered to the right wing of his party rather than growing the One Nation wing. This shouldn't be difficult to understand.

I couldn’t agree more, and I also wholeheartedly agree with pointythings’s post immediately after yours. All politicians - and others - can be criticised, irrespective of colour.

My question was just raising the issue that if criticism of Lammy is likely to be based on the colour of his skin or his ethnic background so it is presumably for criticism of all other BAME politicians whatever their politics.

I didn’t raise race or ethnicity as a reason behind criticism of a politician. Another poster did.

I think it’s fine to attack Badenoch’s politics, words or actions. Just as with Lammy. But then I wouldn’t cry racism.

This. I completely agree with Badenoch when she says the colour of someone’s skin should be no more relevant than the colour of their eyes or hair. However the MP who’s received the most abuse in their career is Diane Abbott and some of it’s been quite explicitly racist. It’s not unreasonable to extrapolate that the same applies to Lammy.

Incidentally @Rummly, you included Javid in your list and I very rarely saw any criticism of him on any grounds because he was generally moderate and principled.

To be fair, Badenoch was first to denounce that and state that anyone in the Conservative party taking part would be expelled.

Yes she was and like you I’m perfectly happy to give her credit where it’s due.

Thank you for reminding the Conservatives among us of the massive blind spot they seem to have on this subject.
