I wish people would read my posts. I don’t think this will affect the majority. But it is going to affect good people who are just trying to put food on your plate. Do you want food security or not? If I was a young farmer now I would just say ‘Fuck it!’

Tax changes where you go from zero to xx% should be bought in gradually and/or with exemptions, as people make plans based on the previous policy.

Plus the change doesn't stop Dyson from buying up woodland and farmland, he still still get a 20% break.

No tax change should make anyone lose their business, not 1 farm should be faced with this choice.

To me, this smacks of the WFA debacle, its embarrassing hearing minister after minister trying to defend taking money of a pensioner whose income is a few pounds over the PC limit.

I think Labour have done some great things since July but these two need rethinking.

I was sad to hear about John Prescott. What a guy. Very politically effective.

Zonder · 21/11/2024 08:18

Gordon Brown just called him a colossus. He was a big man with a big character. Sad to think of him in a care home with Alzheimer's.

ContactNightmare · 21/11/2024 08:23

Gordon Brown has just paid a very warm tribute to John Prescott on R4. I encourage everyone who is interested in politics to listen to it.

DuncinToffee · 21/11/2024 08:39

His family say he passed away to the sound of jazz music, that is a lovely thought.

Yes it was lovely.

I started a thread for him in chat. I suspect it won't get much traffic as there seems to be so much labour hate on MN currently but that's a shame as he worked hard and left a big legacy.

And even made it up with Mandelson at the end apparently!

PandoraSox · 21/11/2024 08:47

Just catching up. Very sad news about Prescott. Roughly what time was Brown's tribute, please?

ContactNightmare · 21/11/2024 08:47

Ah yes. I remember Peter the Crab. Prescott could be very funny on Mandelson

Zonder · 21/11/2024 08:47

And I was right. Someone has already responded with a negative. Who does that on an RIP thread for someone who just died?

just ignore those and don't let it turn into a bunfight.

Bitter people. It really reflects on them.

So true. As if we hadn't seen what they're like anyway. But to spout off on a RIP thread is a whole new level.

Has Ofwat just woken up?

BestIsWest · 21/11/2024 09:32

RIP. John Prescott. An old school socialist

Has Ofwat just woken up?

I think they couldn't do it before because they hadn't got the power they now have.

Remember Labour "Where's their plan ?" have passed a shed load of legislation that very few people have completely read.

Meanwhile the VAT folk are slowly leaving reality behind, I see.

SerendipityJane · 21/11/2024 11:24

John Prescott was formidable in opposition and sadly seemed less effective when in power (same as Harriet Harman in my humble opinion).

My abiding memory of JP is an appearance on QT (when it was worth watching) in opposition where he ended a very powerful diatribe saying that if we went down the Tories idea of the future the whole country would end up with everyone trying to sell everyone else insurance.

DuncinToffee · 21/11/2024 12:11

I don't know which media outlet it was but this is just plain weird.

“Elon Musk’s father has said Keir Starmer must resign within the next three months. Is he going to resign?”, the Prime Minister’s spokesman is asked.

Starmer’s spokesman: “No he is not”

Notonthestairs · 21/11/2024 12:21

It was Erroll Musk (Daddy) in a frankly bizarre exchange with Andrew Marr on LBC.
