I don’t think I’ve actually loathed a group of politicians as much as I loathe this Labour front bench. Venal, petty liars

My goodness. That says a lot after the damage done by the previous lot. Stunned that you weren't as incensed previously.

If I were in a position to vote on Assisted Dying I would have to vote against. Too much leeway for disabled people to be harmed by it. That does not diminish the pain and anguish and appropriateness of it for many people. It’s just too open to manipulation for me at the current time.

As the parent of a young person with quite severe learning disabilities this sums up my thoughts.
Navigating medical treatment on their behalf has been a minefield.
And I am all too aware of how disabled people were treated during Covid. I dread being unable to advocate on her behalf.

Add to this that legislation is often amended/revised/replaced at later dates (often as a point of necessity i'll admit) I dont feel confident that legislation would stay as is.

We have had a press briefing with senior police officers and commissioners about the ongoing investigations into the riots that followed the Southport attack

Here are the key updates:
🚨1,590 arrests, 1,015 charges
👮‍♂️17% of those arrested were children, 46% were 18-35 years old

At least 99 arrests (6%) were for online offences

That number could be higher, because of issues with the way data is recorded by police forces, but police say the vast majority of investigations relate to in-person disorder, violence and vandalism

The response has cost police £31.7m so far

Matt Jukes, the head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing, said:

"There's a legend which has emerged that the thought police were out arresting hundreds and hundreds of people for having opinions. And the reality is that they were arrested because of their suspected involvement in violence...

"...or criminal damage and direct harms in communities"

AC Jukes said people who "directly incited violence" have been convicted and will continue to be investigated, but that some disinformation and incitement after the Southport attack came from outside UK, including from hostile states

The cost. Fucks sakes. It had to be done to protect people and property but what a waste of money.

I think the farming IHT has hit me hard mentally. I don’t expect any of you to understand. The farming community is in fact a community. I can imagine having a reasoned discussion about this with Wilson Callaghan or Blair. Starmer has revealed himself as a closed minded little man.

Well, the change to pensions being included in IHT will affect me or rather my DD but i'm not moaning about that to every tom dick and harry.

If you re in Scotland with an estate worth around £3m, then tbh i really don't see why your estate or anyone else, shouldn't pay some tax on it.

Especially as, if memory serves me right, you were boasting about how much money you were making on lamb.

You mention Callaghan and Wilson? under their Govts and Edward Heaths, Farmer go no special treatment at all, you paid full IHT.

My wee farm is well below the threshold. My lamb prices continue to rise but so do costs such as feed, contractors, medicine etc I think the‘boasting’ was related to Brexit. The national sheep flock numbers are falling but there is still a demand for lamb

cardibach · 20/11/2024 16:18

So why are you so angry @derxa? Why do you think they are venal liars? Why do you hate them so much more than any others before them? What exactly do you dread?

Edit: I do know it’s possible to be angry on behalf of others, but this level of language seems really personal.

Yes it is falling and it wont be helped by the terrible FTA the previous Govt got us all with Aus and NZ either.

Yet you want them back in again? Weird.

I’m angry on behalf of the farmers who are going to have to sell up. Farming is in the blood. I know this is a cliche. I used to be a teacher and before that a salt Being your own boss is fantastic after that. My cousin is over 80 and has poor mobility but she has a few beef animals. Her neighbours help her out. Before retiring she was an accountant in Edinburgh

Damn. Missed it again! I keep forgetting and am in the shower post rescue dog walk. I should get a move on earlier.

I rarely ever catch it. However I managed to a) make lunch on time and b) out it on bbc sounds and listen to it as I ate.

Rayner was so cool calm and collected. I enjoyed listening to it as opposed to watching it as I felt you got a different impression.

DuncinToffee · 20/11/2024 16:34

It's kind of fascinating to see people's outrage on behalf of a few multi millionaires.

itsgettingweird · 20/11/2024 16:37

But, again, that’s not how I see it. I think he has been straight. I haven’t agreed with everything they’ve done, but I don’t see anything devious.
And to me the Tories are the party of class war. They prioritise themselves and their mates against the ordinary working people - Thatcher totally destroyed working class communities in several parts of the country, for example. I feel like with Labour the aim is fairness. Granted, it’s not always achieved, but this talk of them ‘hating’ particular groups is madness.

This is where I'm at cardi

I don’t want the Tories back in If you read my previous post you would have seen that I just want a sensible government which doesn’t have too much power.

I believe its too early to judge Labour and Starmer after just a few months.

Starmer hasn't more power than any other Govt with a majority, 30 seats or 130, they can vote through what they like.... we'd have to have a multi party coalition for that to change.

AIBU - Rayner destroys Thatcher Right to Buy legacy - Can this Labour Government sink any lower?

itsgettingweird · 20/11/2024 17:26

I have been through similar and had to make some very hard decisions for my loved one in order that their suffering was not needlessly extended. I really want people in that situation to be allowed to die.

But I am still on the fence because of the concerns my DH has expressed (he has a neurological condition which is degenerative, a type of MND).

It is so difficult.

I'll helpfully share those splinters because I 100% agree with this and I'm in the same situation.

I watched my mum die of cancer and I'm glad she was as pain free as possible and extremely well cared for in a hospice but I think at a certain point assisted dying can be a godsend for sufferers. But I have major questions about competence to make that decision when you're so ill iyswim?

But my ds also has a degenerative neurological condition which is a cousin to MND. His won't affect breathing etc and shouldn't make him really ill. There's no evidence of that other than him losing his mobility. But I wouldn't want it to become something that disproportionately affected disabled people - eg flu would likely affect him more badly and I wouldn't want him treated differently to someone not disabled because of this bill.

It's certainly a worthy debate but it is one that constantly raises more questions.

Interesting list. Not sure all of it is necessary. But more than anything I'm pleased to see the consultation launched and the focus on this issue.

so not long term family farmers - but retiree play farmers who are buying up land as its a fun thing to do in retirement with their nice pensions blocking out young people who want to farm any opportunity to be able to afford to do so.

Nope. I inherited my farm from dad. They previously had a large dairy farm which they ran with my brother. Unfortunately my brother died young in an accident. They had to downsize. My father farmed till he was in his nineties. My cousin inherited her small holding from her farming mother. Hope this answers your nasty post.
