I boil tenderstem broccoli as i cannot stand my veg crunchy, has to be soft. Then I fry it in a pan for a minute or two with a knob of butter and a generous sprinkle of steak seasoning. Delicious.

I don't even eat steak that often but I love the steak seasoning and use it on loads of things.

I’d never get dinner on the table if I did all that to the broccoli! 🤣

Fried or roasted is the way.
If you roast it in sesame oil it tastes like a Chinese. My go to though is olive oil, salt and diced garlic.

Oh, I agree about the garlic - broccoli loves garlic!

I cook it like that, easier to chop when it's all cooked.

What is there to chop. break florets off then stick the stalk in whole

PrimitivePerson · 02/11/2024 23:22

Cooking broccoli at all should be a crime punishable by death. It should be banned under the Geneva Convention.

That reminds me, I'll need to put the sprouts on for Christmas in the next couple of weeks

You roast it!! Don’t boil it!!

Ugh one of the worst smells in the world is roast broccoli, it could be that my family burn it, but still. It’s bad

Ramblethroughthebrambles · 02/11/2024 23:37

If stir frying broccoli, I've always blanched it for a minute or two in boiling salted water first and then drained it. Is that not necessary? Can you fry / roast from raw without it burning?

itsmylife7 · 02/11/2024 21:19

🥦 must be steamed and never put in water.
Steamed is the only way 😉

Are you my mother in law? Lol

You can tenderstem. But any thicker stalks would need to be cut in half

A whole head of broccoli needs cutting up into small florets and thinnish slices of stalk in order to roast or stir fry well

What?! You’ll start boiling them in November!

minipie · 02/11/2024 23:45

I usually boil broccoli (tenderstem). I cut the stalks off the florets and I give the stalks a head start before the florets go in.

I could be if your name is Kate 😉

You're probably eating it wrong too. The best part is the stem. Cut off the florets and eat those as normal, but then 'shave' the stem so only the white inner bit is left and eat that raw.

You'll thank me :)

I love raw broccoli 😋

hoarahloux · 03/11/2024 00:02

Just roast it. Boiled veg suck. Roasted veg get crispy and sweet.

Yup , the top is OK but the stem cut into sticks is one of the best veggies to eat alone or dip in any dips

stayathomer · 03/11/2024 00:12

I love it raw (I eat it with chopped up apples). Am a crap cook so I also just boil waaayyyy too much!!

Agree! Steamed is best.

SnowFrogJelly · 03/11/2024 00:54

Boil tenderstem for 4 minutes only or roast in oven with olive oil and garlic

SomeSuperhero · 03/11/2024 01:38

I stopped eating broccoli last year when I found baby caterpillars curled up in the florets. 🤢 This was the final straw after previously finding on more than one occasion bright green caterpillars all hiding in between the florets, like a pp earwigs have been in them a couple of times. I have a huge fear of caterpillars and I cannot bear the thought of finding any more caterpillars. I vary where I get my veg from so it isn’t all from the same place. Since I told a few people are the hidden caterpillars they have found them too. The advice was to give the florets a good shake but I found it easier to stop eating it. Shudder.

Yes, I know that food can get creatures on it, but I really hate caterpillars. With carrots etc you can see any passengers. Broccoli has too many hiding places.

I don't get on with roasted broccoli because the ends burn, it's not like cauliflower where it caramalises when roasted, broccoli just burns and goes bitter

Same here! Reading all these comments about how good it is I’m wondering if we’re using too high temperature, or cooking too long, I’m going to experiment now!

DeanElderberry · 03/11/2024 11:44

Take the florets off the stem, divide as finely as you want, put them on a plate, cover them with an upturned bowl, zap in the microwave for three minutes. If you aren't going to eat them immediately they are good to freeze at that stage.

The stalk is very tasty and crunchy to eat raw, but I have to exercise caution of I'm going to be with people afterwards because it leaves me windy.

Crumpetdisappointment · 03/11/2024 11:47

a friend used to cook a cauliflower whole, until she was put right!
i dont buy broccoli anymore - it goes bad in the fridge so quickly
but have bought one with the intention of stir frying, it is now the only way i like it

Crumpetdisappointment · 03/11/2024 11:48

i like the stalk/stem in a soup
