I'd only ever had it boiled or steamed til I ate at someone's house and they'd roast it with lemon zest and seasalt! Soooo good!

Edited

It’s also nice stir fried in 🌶 chilli and garlic!

AInightingale · 02/11/2024 21:55

I have found earwigs in broccoli twice while rinsing and splitting it...

My mother said that it was the done thing to cook cauliflower whole years ago, but also that she found a massive slug in the middle of it once when it was boiled, so that might be why that method fell out of fashion.

You're probably eating it wrong too. The best part is the stem. Cut off the florets and eat those as normal, but then 'shave' the stem so only the white inner bit is left and eat that raw.

You'll thank me :)

I do this! It is the best bit! My friend thought I was insane when I wouldn’t let her throw it away when I was at her house and ate it

Calliopespa · 02/11/2024 21:58

That broccoli boiling video looks like the sort of scene I’d expect to come across in a student flat.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/11/2024 22:01

I cut it and chuck it in a steamer for 5 minutes until It's cooked but not soggy.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/11/2024 22:03

Roasted - it is Food of the Gods

Î do that when I'm chopping the broccoli florets for dinner - peel the stalk and eat it raw. Love that hot flavour and crisp, crunchy texture.

jen337 · 02/11/2024 22:06

Roasted is best. Otherwise separate florets and put in dish with a little water cover and steam in microwave for 4 mins, stirring 1/2 way through, adjust timing for preferred crunchiness/softness. No point boiling it.

I pan fry tenderstem and other garlic.
sometimes until it’s charred hmmmm

How do you do yours please? I pan fry it too but it seems to stay rock hard!!

IncessantNameChanger · 02/11/2024 22:15

The stalk is the best bit. I just steam.it until its mush

soupfiend · 02/11/2024 22:20

I don't get on with roasted broccoli because the ends burn, it's not like cauliflower where it caramalises when roasted, broccoli just burns and goes bitter

Frostytree · 02/11/2024 22:22

I’m saving the stalks for soup. Because unless I peel and julienne them they are left untouched on plate. And life’s too short.
But I can’t stand Joe Wicks and his little trees.

Cornercandy · 02/11/2024 22:22

The stalks are the most nutritious part of the veg.
Blitz them up in a soup

If I’m pan frying veg, I steam it first, then toss in butter on low-med heat, with chilli flakes, a little garlic and plenty of ground black pepper. Add a couple of teaspoons of cumin seeds in autumn/winter. Always cook sprouts that way after steaming.

PaminaMozart · 02/11/2024 22:25

Surely you cut off the florets and either steam or roast them.

Freeze the stems.

Once you've collected enough stems you use them to make soup.

Lifeomars · 02/11/2024 22:26

spanieleyes22 · 02/11/2024 21:36

Do you have to grate the carrot though

I cheated and bought ready-grated carrots😊

justasking111 · 02/11/2024 22:27

My son makes bang bang cauliflower, I keep meaning to have a go. You can do the same with broccoli.

Sgtmajormummy · 02/11/2024 22:37

To those who steam broccoli: dont just tumble it into the steamer basket, arrange it with the stems pointing down so they get more steam and the soft parts get less. Keep the stalk for soup, peel and thinly slice.

I do it in a pressure cooker for less smell, switching it off as soon as it starts to whistle.

Dontsayyouloveme · 02/11/2024 22:40

Roast it every time!! Delicious!!

Listen, the only way to cook broccoli is pretty simple.

Put on a pan.
Lightly salt it.
Bring it to the boil.
Place broccoli on chopping board.
Using a sharp knife, dial pizza hut, throw broccoli away and use the lightly salted water to scrub your floors.
This is the tastiest way, trust me.

You roast it!! Don’t boil it!!

Ugh no thanks. I hate roast broccoli, the texture is weird and it tastes how I imagine farts do.

Boiled in salted water is the way for me. I don't mind steaming but tbh I feel it needs the salt and I prefer it to salting after cooking.

ForThisNow · 02/11/2024 22:47

I always used to steam broccoli when the DC were little, but now, we only like it stir-fried quickly in sesame oil with chilli and garlic. Boiled broccoli is pretty horrible.

Gardenia777 · 02/11/2024 22:48

I cut off the florets, peel the stem then slice it into “pound coin” pieces, rinse everything before placing in a lidded bowl with a scant tablespoon of water. Four minutes on high in the microwave cooks it perfectly, enhances the colour and ensures there’s very little excess cooking liquid and loss of vitamins. I’ll have to try roasting it as described above.

Sepoctnov · 02/11/2024 22:53

Kept whole like that will also retain all the grit, mud and bugs (dead or alive).

I agree with PP the stalk with the outer hard skin removed is delicious raw.

🤣 broccoli and farts are definitely cousins.
