Is anyone else's dog completely unbothered by fireworks?

Ours (collie lab cross) just doesn't give a fuck, and neither did my previous dog (a lab GSD cross).

If there's a particularly loud one he will look up at me, but it doesn't seem to upset him at all. People keep asking me what I did to make him so calm about them but I don't think I did anything!?

Is it just down to their personality? Or is there anything owners can do when training?

Nope, mine isn't bothered. In fact I've never owned a dog that was, but thats mostly because I played intermittent firework sounds to them as part of their training.

Nyancat · 02/11/2024 19:44

Mine loses the plot if anyone walks past our drive or if a person happens to say hello to her but couldn't give a fuck about fireworks, nothing we've done either

Brananan · 02/11/2024 19:45

Mine don't, but we live next to a pheasant shoot so they are used to bangs!

I think its a mix of their temperament, socialisation, exposure etc.

I have two cats. One doesn't care at all and the other is shaking and hiding behind a curtain.

bakewellbride · 02/11/2024 19:45

You are so lucky. My greyhound has been a nervous wreck, quivering, walking around and around panting, too scared to go in the garden the next day. He's on anti anxiety medication we got from the vet. We've only had him for 5 weeks the poor thing.

Cakey46 · 02/11/2024 19:46

Yes! Our greyhound doesn't like Prosecco being opened, doesn't like me going in the freezer but literally can't be arsed getting upset about fireworks and bangs even if he is in the garden having a wee. Brilliant boy x

Scutterbug · 02/11/2024 19:46

Mine actually likes them! When she was a puppy we used to make them seem really exciting and she would watch them out the window with us. She’s 9 now and just opens one eye then goes back to sleep again.

ReadingInTheRain583 · 02/11/2024 19:46

Fireworks are about the one thing my current dog doesn't bark at.

Previous dogs not bothered either but had one as a kid that was petrified. Was awful.

whatthehelldowecare · 02/11/2024 19:47

Ours likes them too, sits at the window watching them, tail wagging

Xmasbabyxmas · 02/11/2024 19:47

Sadly no longer with us but our greyhound couldn't have cared less. Didnt even flinch. Scared of thunder though.

WellHelloScottie · 02/11/2024 19:47

My terrier is 12 and is still terrified of fireworks. He is fine and used to noise and bangs, but every year he turns into a total quivering mess with fireworks.
It's awful.

BetteDavisChin · 02/11/2024 19:48

We've had six dogs. The only one who wasn't scared of fireworks was deaf.

saveforthat · 02/11/2024 19:49

My Golden Retriever couldn't care less.

Appin · 02/11/2024 19:49

My cocker spaniel isn't at all bothered by them, doesn't even notice them! Last year we were out for a walk and one seemed to go off just above our heads. I got the fright of my life and he didn't even flinch!

Katherineryan1986 · 02/11/2024 19:49

My 2 spaniels don't bother either, but then again they were working gun dogs (now retired) (as well as pets), so loud bangs only mean "where's the bird? I'll pick it up" to them!

IrritableVowel · 02/11/2024 19:49

Dog 1 - hates them. Not scared of them, but very angry at the disruption, so she barks a lot.

Dog 2 - lurcher - doesn't bat an eyelid

Dog 3 - barks along with/ at Dog 1 but isn't bothered by the bangs

It has been a long week or so of bangs and barks at various times of day and night

Karaokequeenie · 02/11/2024 19:49

Neither are bothered! They were exposed to firework recordings as puppies as part of training.

mollyfolk · 02/11/2024 19:50

Our dog is fine with one bang but with constant bangs he starts following me around looking worried. He slept with his head on my tummy last night.

H2023 · 02/11/2024 19:51

One of mine is sitting here completely unphased, which is kind of unlike him as he’s usually a bit scatty. The other one barks a bit but he barks at most noises!

HappiestSleeping · 02/11/2024 19:52

Our lab isn't bothered at all. We are watching tv with fireworks going off outside, and he's sleeping away in his bed.

I had a rescue that was. But with a bit of effort we worked through it.

Futurethinking2026 · 02/11/2024 19:52

My rescue is not bothered by at all, sometimes watches them out the window. The doorbell on the other hand!

Oh the cat isn't bothered by anything. Except crows, she hates crows.

Mine was terrified until she went a bit deaf as she got old!

OrlandointheWilderness · 02/11/2024 19:53

No fuss here, but they are Gundog's. Have to watch the lab though or he'll be over the fence to go and find the birds!

Stormyweatheroutthere · 02/11/2024 19:54

4 ddogs. 1 now deaf.. 1 looks to me and I tell her it's fine! 2 oblivious... Took 2 Trick or Treating.. Never flinched when lots went off nearby..

As a dc our collie used to literally dig into the back of the sofa!
