Is anyone else's dog completely unbothered by fireworks?

Ours (collie lab cross) just doesn't give a fuck, and neither did my previous dog (a lab GSD cross).

If there's a particularly loud one he will look up at me, but it doesn't seem to upset him at all. People keep asking me what I did to make him so calm about them but I don't think I did anything!?

Is it just down to their personality? Or is there anything owners can do when training?

My old dog would run up and down barking at them. He wasn't scared, just proper agro at them and wanted to fight them!

Angrymum22 · 02/11/2024 19:55

Our lab is fine with them. She is working strain so bred for calmness. We took her to a game fare when she was young and she was mor interested in the discarded burgers when we were stood next to the guns
Our previous two were a bit more skittish despite the first one actually working. She was fine at shoots but would hide under the bed with fireworks and thunder.
The current lab has separation anxiety, you can’t have everything I suppose.

I've had three dogs, two couldn't have cared less, one was petrified (until she went quite deaf). My numerous cats have done nothing more than look up and then go back to sleep. I think it is just down to their personality.

Mine doesn’t care about fireworks either

Tooty78 · 02/11/2024 19:56

Lots of bonfire parties around here tonight, all we can hear are those cannon like fireworks, non of the "ooooh" and "aaaaahhh" type.

My niece's poor dog will be a nervous wreck.

ThatIsNotMyNameSoWhyAreYouCallingMeThat · 02/11/2024 19:56

Mine’s currently in the garden watching them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SirChenjins · 02/11/2024 19:57

ChenDog is usually a nervous wee thing but for some reason he’s not that bothered by them - doesn’t like being outside when they’re going off but happy enough to listen to them exploding from the house.

Floralnomad · 02/11/2024 19:57

My patterdale x was never bothered and is now almost completely deaf so is still not bothered .

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 02/11/2024 19:57

Fox terrier doesn’t give a shit. Whippet has snood round her ears(well chopped up sock), scarf wrapped around her like a thunder shirt, under blanket curled up to me shaking. Luckily it’s not been too bad this year.

GroovyChick87 · 02/11/2024 19:58

My little fluffy boy runs outside and barks at the sky. He's not scared, just highly pissed off.

stargirl1701 · 02/11/2024 19:58

Our lab not bothered but she is a working lab and had early socialisation with shooting.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 02/11/2024 19:58

We've got 3 days and they aren't bothered by fireworks at all. I can here them outside and they are all fast asleep

Rowgtfc72 · 02/11/2024 19:58

Like a previous poster, fireworks are about the only thing my dachsund doesn't bark at.

Mine don't, but we live next to a pheasant shoot so they are used to bangs!

We live next to crop fields and it has an air cannon bird scarer. Plus they also shoot as well. So our dog is also used to bangs and isn't bothered by fireworks.

mnahmnah · 02/11/2024 19:59

None of our dogs have ever been bothered, all spaniels. This is our first lot with our 1 year old poodle and he’s fine.

thistimelastweek · 02/11/2024 19:59

Ours is furious!

narns · 02/11/2024 19:59

Ours isn't bothered at all but they go off weekly here (inner city) and there are loads of them throughout the year for various religious festivals, Chinese new year etc so she's used to it. My friend used to live with me and her dog was terrified, he would quiver, urinate and hide under things. It broke my heart!

Magmum75 · 02/11/2024 20:00

My cat is blissfully sleeping through, 18 years, deaf to them now, thankfully as very loud display nearby us.

Namechange5555555555 · 02/11/2024 20:01

Mine sat in the garden watching them fascinated

Changeyourfuckingcar · 02/11/2024 20:03

None of mine, the farm dogs or the house dogs, could give less of a fuck if they tried, but they’re exposed to all sorts of noises, plus I shoot and we have shoots take place on neighbouring land often, so it makes sense. I feel terribly sorry for all the pets who find themselves scared this time of year, and for the owners doing their best to mitigate it.

Enko · 02/11/2024 20:04

Basset hound here. He stood outside and sort of tilted his head to the side as if he was working out where it came from. Then trotted back in. Right now he is next to me on the sofa fast asleep.

It's nothing we have done as no training. However he is a chill dude as most bassets.

Randomsabreur · 02/11/2024 20:05

Neither of ours were bothered, both working line labs.

To be fair older one was bred right by a firing range so probably thought fireworks were a bit pathetic... Mostly was looking for birds to retrieve though!

New puppy barked a bit first few he heard but is now uninterested...

YeOldeGreyhound · 02/11/2024 20:05

My dog has never been bothered by them. She stands in the garden and watches them.
She used to be terrified of thunder, but she is bit deaf now so rarely notices it unless it is right overhead.

Maviz · 02/11/2024 20:06

I have 3, one of them was nervous when young but not they don't care at all. In fact last night we went for a walk during a big local display.

Feellikeafailurenow · 02/11/2024 20:07

My dog (collie staffie cross) never bothered even if he was out in the garden when fireworks got set off
