Is anyone else's dog completely unbothered by fireworks?

Ours (collie lab cross) just doesn't give a fuck, and neither did my previous dog (a lab GSD cross).

If there's a particularly loud one he will look up at me, but it doesn't seem to upset him at all. People keep asking me what I did to make him so calm about them but I don't think I did anything!?

Is it just down to their personality? Or is there anything owners can do when training?

Yes! Our greyhound doesn't like Prosecco being opened, doesn't like me going in the freezer but literally can't be arsed getting upset about fireworks and bangs even if he is in the garden having a wee. Brilliant boy x

Maybe I’m wrong then 🙈

Mine was completely unbothered until she was about 7. Then one year she just switched... shaking, cowering, whining constantly, basically hyperventilating. It was nothing I did that made her not be bothered by them previously and nothing I did that made her suddenly terrified. She wasn't scared of any other loud noises - I don't know, I suppose fireworks just have a specific pitch that affected her?

From what I understand a lot of dogs only become anxious about fireworks when they're older. I'm sure some owners contribute to the anxiety by fussing, but don't assume that's the case for all, or that your dog is (currently!) not scared because of your superior techniques!

Neither of my dogs has been particular bothered. I've just put it down to it being a busy household. The older dog, recently passed away, had spent her life growing up with toddlers and children and all the noisy, odd toys they get. The younger one has grown up hearing the bird scarers in the fields.

We had a JRT - not bothered by fireworks at all. I wondered if she could hear them TBH, but since I knew she could hear the opening of a packet of bacon 3 rooms away this was illogical.

Branleuse · 02/11/2024 21:48

My dogs seem to be ok with them, but previously we had a staffie who was completely terrified.

Humphreyshead · 02/11/2024 21:49

After reading the other comments, I just want to say that I’m not a panderer. I don’t overly reassure them, as I had read years ago that this gives the opposite effect.

buffyspikefaith · 02/11/2024 21:51

We had a red setter when I was a child and he would lie in the garden watching them
Fuming if someone tried to make him come inside!

isthesolution · 02/11/2024 21:53

Yup. Mine doesn't care at all. We intentionally took her outside to listen to them as much as possible as a puppy to try and stop her being scared once older.

BigDahliaFan · 02/11/2024 21:54

Cat is terrified of them. Dog, doesn't seem to notice. She's absolutely chicken shit scared of flies and traffic cones though.

Lovemusic82 · 02/11/2024 21:59

My old dog (staffie) used to hate them and would worry she would have a heart attack. She’s the only dog I have had that was scared. My mums dog doesn’t give a shit and will sit and watch them with us in the garden,

pinkstripeycat · 02/11/2024 21:59

Nope he isn’t bothered. I even walked him on bonfire night once not realising it was the 5th. He wasn’t concerned. Even my current cat isn’t bothered. He’s gone out the car flap, come in for some food, gone out again and come back for cat yoghurt.
I used to keep the cat in around the 5th but as people started setting of fireworks all hours for weeks on end he was inevitably out at times I hadn’t realised there were going to be fireworks and he wasn’t bothered so we don’t keep him in at all now.

daisydaisyrose · 02/11/2024 21:59

Just had to carry mine out to the garden to do a wee, she shot straight back in as soon as she was done. She's nearly 9 now and it's only the last year or so that have really bothered her.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 02/11/2024 22:00

No, she’s terrified, panting and shaking.

gano · 02/11/2024 22:00

I don't currently have a dog, but I've had two in the past. My border collie x staffie actively enjoyed them! She'd sit at the window watching them, with her tail wagging. My greyhound was petrified of them though. I used to make her a den under the dining table, with thick duvets over the top so she'd feel a bit safer.

TeenLifeMum · 02/11/2024 22:00

I’ve never had any pets who are bothered. Our current dog is a gun dog but we took him in the garden with cheese for training when there was a local fireworks display going on the first year we had him. I think many people assume their dog will be scared and do no training then moan on social media.

Birdscratch · 02/11/2024 22:03

I had a dog that was absolutely fine with fireworks for years. Then some idiot let off a huge firework on a random winter evening when the dog was in the garden. They set it off at an angle from parkland next to my home. It exploded at a height of about 9 feet from the ground right above the dog. From then on he was terrified of fireworks. All it takes is one fuckwit.

friendconcern · 02/11/2024 22:05

None of our animals have ever been bothered by them. They’re very chilled

StressedQueen · 02/11/2024 22:07

My Yorkshire Terrier is absolutely fine with them. The Shih Tzu gets so terrified and always has and I feel horrible for him

Fizzygoo · 02/11/2024 22:20

Our spaniel has never noticed but goes apeshit if the doorbell goes which I’ve never understood…more of a protective thing? Despite being a placid wet blanket 😆

Willowback · 02/11/2024 22:22

Our springer is a gun dog he absolutely loves them, we've got to let him out to see them. He sits and watches them then runs around and barks for more!!
We took him to the local council display one year and people were tutting at us saying that's terrible bringing a dog, we haven't taken him again judgey twats

NotUnderMyUmbrella · 02/11/2024 22:22

Our boy sat watching them out of the window for ages yesterday, seemed quite interested.

But he is terrified of the rustle of plastic bags, and runs and hides whenever we put a new bin bag in the kitchen bin. He hates the hoover too.
So it’s just luck I think, rather than anything we have or haven’t done.

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 02/11/2024 22:25

Choc lab here, We had about 5 lots going off at the same time, she slept through it 🤭 when she did wake she was too busy scrounging for food to bother. You see her ears perk up and she just carri3s on what she was doing. She’s 9 now, so I guess she’s realised she’s safe in the house, when she was a puppy she’d run and bark by the door but she would never shake or hide etc.

Soontobe60 · 02/11/2024 22:37

I’ve had many dogs in my lifetime. The only one that was bothered was an Old English sheepdog. She could sense a firework going off from miles away, sensed thunder and lightening even when it was just a distant flash and rumble. She would shake uncontrollably, wee, and climb up onto my lap crying desperately. Even sedatives from the vet didnt help. Being held captive by a huge crying, shaking weeping dog is not ideal!

Yes same. All the smug people saying it's owners fretting. I not my family have reacted to the fireworks going off, but my border terrier used to be terrified. I used to have to put her under the stairs to try and calm her

TheNuthatch · 02/11/2024 22:52

My two sleep through it happily (both spaniels). I've had a few different breeds and X's over the years and they've all been fine.
I feel sorry for pet owners who have to deal with terrified cats and dogs at this time of year, must be awful.
