OBR document unveiled by Reeves says the previous govt "did not provide the OBR" with all the information available to them and their spring Budget forecast would have been "materially different" if they had.

That was an absolute clanger

Private school vat from January confirmed

She's addressing the fiscal drag but not for a few years, keeping previous government income tax thresholds for now

itsgettingweird · 30/10/2024 13:21

Awwww piggy he was gorgeous. Once again I'm so sorry Flowers

InMySpareTime · 30/10/2024 13:21

Inherited pensions brought into IHT. Already lots of people frothing about "DH's pension", forgetting that IHT doesn't apply between spouses.

cardibach · 30/10/2024 13:22

This is good. Thoughtful, with mitigations to avoid potential unintended consequences

Willowkins · 30/10/2024 13:22

Investing in children and young people

PickAChew · 30/10/2024 13:23

There will be some cheers in working men's clubs. Government to stop creaming off the mine worker's pension scheme and a penny off tax on draft beer.

DuncinToffee · 30/10/2024 13:23

Freeze on income tax no longer being extended beyond 2028.

OP posts:
Alexandra2001 · 30/10/2024 13:26

Good overall, CGT and IHT will potentially affect me but quite honestly, if i make a CG of £xx, why the heck shouldn't i pay tax at my current rate? & why shouldn't a pension be included in with other assets for IHT ?

No point moaning about potholes etc etc if you try to avoid tax.

She is good, I didn’t quite expect that.

Yes she is good.

Very good explanations - having spent weeks ignoring all the crap she's actually out now giving reasons and I'm pleased about that.

I had a feeling there would be lots of "we will" but no justifications.

Freezing fuel duty, that will shit* up some who were predicting doom and gloom!

*Meant to say shut, but shit works.

Private jets air duty goes up. This budget is really gunning for the super rich

Pah! They can afford it. Most of them have very well lined pockets after 14 years of this Tory government.

dontcallmelen · 30/10/2024 13:35

She is very impressive, I don’t really understand a lots of the content (those that “know me” know my grasp of economics is woeful) but she certainly sounds very knowledgeable & sensible

PandoraSox · 30/10/2024 13:37

There are suddenly a lot of farmers posting on MN.

itsgettingweird · 30/10/2024 13:37

I know we aren't meant to comment on looks - especially woman but anyone else noticed what beautiful eyes RR has and how they give out warmth and a sense of truth?

She has such expressive intonation and facial expressions and her body language is exceptional.

Alexandra2001 · 30/10/2024 13:39

The emphasis seems to be on more ordinary people, not as has happened under the Tories, budgets & policies for the wealthier.

InMySpareTime · 30/10/2024 13:40

Transpennine electrification back on, that's a much needed upgrade, and will help the Northern Powerhouse.
HS2 to Euston 🚄

She would make a better PM than KS in in my opnion.

No doubt there will be someone on the frothers thread(s) saying just the opposite

SpringSt3p · 30/10/2024 13:41

Can’t wait to see Tory reaction to this. Sunak has barely looked up the whole time

Indeed. If you can afford a private jet you can afford to pay some more duty.

i was very concerned about today but so far it's been ok for us.

InMySpareTime · 30/10/2024 13:44

Money from sale of social housing to be used by LAs to buy more social housing. As it should have been from the start.

Small businesses taken care of - threshold changed so more employers won't have to pay NI

Can someone explain this for me, my best friend owns a cafe and employs several people. She was naturally really concerned about the national insurance as she's been hit by endless bill rises recently and worried about how she would manage as her margins are already very tight, will this protect her ?
