So what were you up to in 1986?

I'm in my bedroom on the phone to best friend who I had a secret crush on (he came out five years later). We are talking shite about who knows what. Later, I'll watch black and white telly in my room, possibly snooker.

I’ve just remembered the winter of 1986/7 was sooooo cold that my dad built a toboggan run in our garden for my birthday party and my mum rang everyone to say it was now a snow party.

We had two phone lines into our house because of my dad’s job and all my friends used to dare me to touch the red phone! It sat in a corner of the dining room and I wasn’t allowed to answer it. It’s sat in my porch now (an old rotary dial).

The summer was super hot.

The guy I referenced in my earlier post came out as gay at the beginning of '87 after using me as his beard at his work functions for most of '86. 😬 Definitely the low point of the year, but looking back I was quite naive at the time, and despite living in a very gay-friendly town my gaydar wasn't yet on point. I'd suss him a mile off now. 😄 Painful and humiliating at the time, though.

There's a fair few of them not with us any more, many gone before their time :(
