TOTALLY inspired by Dame Jilly Cooper's 'Rivals' finally gracing our screens today😄

So what were you up to in 1986?

OP posts:
NetballHoop · 18/10/2024 15:09

It was my first/second year in London at Uni. I spent the entire summer in Spain and then came back to move into a flatshare in Fulham.

Would I swap places now?

Hmm. I don't think I could live with the amount of smoking but other than that, YES!

DebbyU · 18/10/2024 15:09

Got married -still very happy

ginasevern · 18/10/2024 15:13

@NorthernLiner Oh yes, all on my own personal company credit card with, if I remember correctly, a £10,000 limit. In 1986 that was a lot.

HermoniePotter · 18/10/2024 15:15

Studying at Uni and living my best life partying in Edinburgh.

LoudPlumDog · 18/10/2024 15:22

I was sixteen and pregnant. Working full time in a job I stayed at for 14 years.

FreeRider · 18/10/2024 15:22

I was 18 in the August, had started dating the guy who would be my 1st husband in the June. Unfortunately I was in too big of a hurry to grow up, we got married when I had only just turned 21...divorced at 23.

But 1986 is still my favourite year. I was having a great time going out with my then best friend - we shared the same birthday - and the music that year was so good. I'd go back to 1986 in a heartbeat!

Waitingfordoggo · 18/10/2024 15:26

I was 9 so most likely pretending to be a horse or pretending I had a horse. I was very into horses but completely unaware of Jilly Cooper and her stories.

DramaAlpaca · 18/10/2024 15:27

I'd just graduated and started my first job in London. Exciting times.

TubeScreamer · 18/10/2024 15:30

Doing homework
Listening to a lot of Wham!
Collecting stickers and smelly pens

fussychica · 18/10/2024 15:32

I was 30, just been promoted to a position managing three offices. Had to travel by train and bus between them because I'd just failed my driving test. Not the happiest of times.

Blanketpolicy · 18/10/2024 15:34

I was 1st year in Glasgow College of Technology doing a Computer Studies HND, started when I was 16. I came from quite a sheltered upbringing with strict parents so the Student Union (that was easy to get into those days) was a bit of an eye opener. Drank draft cider as that was what everyone else ordered and I just wanted to fit in, gagged nearly every time I drank it 🙈

IT was fairly new back then so it was the start of a long career and so many changes over the last 38 years (jeez, I feel old now!)

Spent most of my weekends at home down the local leisure center, ice skating discos which were popular back then, and a huge crowd hung about before and after in the bar there (again not much age checking going on). Mostly avoided boys at that time as I was too shy/just didn't have a clue.

Having second baby and moving house

2nd year of a levels at a terrible FE college, most miserable year of my life

Appearing on Saturday Superstore kissing Roland Rat! 😂

You’re just showing off now. Went straight for the A list and bypassed Kevin the Gerbil then? 😂

I can remember going dowb for the day and going to the huge Top Shop and to the King’s Road. It felt like such an exciting time!

O-levels and pretending I was older in the pub.

Same but i was on A levels. ;)

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 18/10/2024 15:52

I was 13. Living the dream in an all girls comp, discovering boys and rock music.

Good times

ImaginativeUserName123 · 18/10/2024 15:55

Three years old, nearly four. Lots of walks and bus rides as we had no car. Remember being in and out of the neighbour's house. Lots of spooky happenings in the house we were living in. I had a hospital stint for about a month during this year and a little yellow dress that I adored. Took my little soft toy dog everywhere with me.

Very grainy photographic evidence provided! 😂

Oh happy days! That summer I finished studying at Bristol Uni, leaving Uni debt free (apart from the interest-free(?) graduate loan that I was to use to buy shares in many of the utility flotations).

A mate and I found a flat in Forest Hill in a newspaper advert and we both had jobs at different accounting firms. I am sure we'd have been sent home if we turned up wearing trousers or no tights/heels. Of my cohort of trainees, i reckon <5% were non-white. Sex mix was probably about 60:40 male/female, but very few women at managerial level and above. Big Bang happened in the City. Which reminds me, IRA bomb scares were still common.

People could still smoke on the top floor of buses and the underground (and offices) and I seem to remember that pubs closed after lunch until 5pm. Nothing much was open on Sundays. There were 4 TV channels.

It snowed a lot in London in the Winter of '86/7 and it was termed "The Big Freeze" (so any hints of Global Warming were laughed away).

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 18/10/2024 16:14

I was only 14 so was probably at school in Year 3 (old money) or year 9 for those not as old as me

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 18/10/2024 16:14

I was early 20s, working full time, living in house share, out most evenings, in a very lopsided relationship, drinking and smoking a lot, enjoying the music.
