TOTALLY inspired by Dame Jilly Cooper's 'Rivals' finally gracing our screens today😄

So what were you up to in 1986?

I'm 16. Taking O levels & CSEs, dreaming of going to college. Listening to The Smiths but also a Goth (still am at heart) Under age drinking in pubs. Discovering Rocky Horror! Saturday job in a shop. Discovering Aflecks Palace in Manchester. Watching Neighbours, Moonlighting and The Clothes Show. Smoking Silk Cut or Consulate Menthol cigarettes. Drinking Thunderbird at parties. Best time ever!

20, having the time of my life.

EllaPaella · 18/10/2024 23:12

I was 7.. loving Madonna and Michael Jackson. Soon to discover Tifffany, Belinda Carlise and Kylie! Roller skates, snoopy and Garfield. Playing out on the street with the kids on the estate. A second hand Apple Raliegh bike, happy days.

EllaPaella · 18/10/2024 23:15

I also specifically remember getting 'Blossom' my little pony and 'crystal' Barbie that year for Christmas as well the True Blue Madonna album.

An amazing year for music!

Printedword · 18/10/2024 23:24

It was an eventful year. I began the year engaged to long term boyfriend. I was jilted in the midsummer. A month later I bumped into a friend who had been a student at the same time as ex and myself. He asked about the wedding prep and when I told him it was off there was a think bubble 💭 saying ‘I wonder how long before I can ask her out?’ Six weeks was the answer, we have been married for over 30 years 😊

80s music was shit, Plus the Thatcher years.

I was in my first year of a hairdressing apprenticeship, it was all shampoos and sets, blue rinses, perms and highlights.
I was 16 and out clubbing every weekend, just needed to memorise a fake date of birth to make me 18 if asked by a bouncer, but if one of my former teachers was on the door then it was no problem (he’d even buy me a drink if he saw me when he was in the club).

Had a 21 year old boyfriend who my parents hated, which made me even more keen on him.

Are you me?
You've just described my life, including the boyfriend 😁

Mostly hanging out in a squat on Caledonian road in London, in an empty office block. Scene of some very OTT parties.

HormonalHetty · 18/10/2024 23:39

I was 10, going into last year of primary school. Long hot summer days of playing out.... 4040 in and bulldogs, manhunt etc.... went everywhere on roller-skates.

Loving the series so far. The music, fashion and hair 😀

Blondiney · 18/10/2024 23:41

I was going through an exceptionally ugly stage 😭

Copperoliverbear · 18/10/2024 23:42

My new little baby sister was born, adored her. X

Tabbyandwhite · 18/10/2024 23:59

In Primary school, enjoying being a young child with not a care of the world and quite liking school at that stage. After school and weekends playing with my friends and neighbours' children. Riding on our bikes in the road, playing "kerby" and ball games, sometimes also inside though, on the BBC Micro computer.

Oblivious to worldly goings on, now I know of course Chenobyl happened in 1986, although I don't remember at the time, only retrospectively did I learn of it. And many other world events I was blissfully unaware and unconcerned about!

Sorry things were so difficult for you at this time @NeverDropYourMooncup

Putting my life back together when DH went off with my best friend.

We were decorating the house we'd just bought.

Though I was in Belfast not Manchester and the night life was a bit more restricted ( as in not allowed out) but my friend brewed Hooch under her bed and we listened to Neil Young and the Cure to cheer ourselves up

winterdarkness · 19/10/2024 06:49

I was 16, living in my home country and still had 2 years left of school. I had no idea that two years later, I would be leaving that country forever

NorthernLiner · 19/10/2024 08:50

Just goes to show what a varied age range we all are.
Some were not even thought of whilst others were already parents.
Fascinating to read what stage of life we were at.

I was 5, so in year 1 maybe?

Taytocrisps · 19/10/2024 08:59

I was 14 so I would have been in 3rd year in secondary school. It's an exam year in Ireland, so teachers wre probably gping on about the importance of the exams and studying quite a bit. Spent a lot of time dreaming about George Michael and listening to Wham! music. Anyone know what was No. 1 in the charts this week in '86?

NorthernLiner · 19/10/2024 09:06

@Taytocrisps

Looks like it was Nick Berry with 'Every Loser Wins' 😁
