TOTALLY inspired by Dame Jilly Cooper's 'Rivals' finally gracing our screens today😄

So what were you up to in 1986?

This time in 1986, I would have been in Year 7, and waiting for my 12th birthday in 15 days time!!! I was and still am a huge a-ha fan!

OnlyFrench · 18/10/2024 16:22

Got married, got my best job ever and whizzed around Europe in shoulder pads and stilettos

Working in a suburban branch of a high street bank. Going out with my friends and drinking too much (black Russians, pernod and black or vodka and orange were favourites). Passing my driving test. Meeting a whole new group of friends, as my classmates had all gone off to university.

Mysterymark · 18/10/2024 16:24

I was just 5, so probably just home from school and watching Raggy Dolls or The Shoe People with my Friday treat of Fruit Salad sweets!

NorthernLiner · 18/10/2024 16:25

"Lots of spooky happenings in the house we were living in."

Tell me us more @ImaginativeUserName123 !

Snap! I immediately thought 1986, the year of The Sun Always Shines on TV

HelenHywater · 18/10/2024 16:29

I was in the lower sixth. Had shed my glasses and discovered alcohol. We had wild alcohol fuelled parties where we all got off with each other.

Loved the Smiths and the Primitives and er, Bruce Springsteen.

Wore black doc martins, floral skirts and mens cardigan's from M&S.

changedusernameforthis1 · 18/10/2024 16:31

Well, I was born in 1990 so I guess I was rather bored 😅

I'm so sorry you're going through this.
I hope your daughter can find a way out and back to you 💐

I had been married for a year and was having a really fun time working and going out with friends in the city we lived in. The music was awesome and we went dancing a lot.

October'86? So going to 6th form college for my 3rd year having not done well enough in my A levels and deciding to retake a couple rather than go to any old HE college to do any old course that would have me. So being with the year below students and not feeling too great about myself. Didn't like the college much.

Had split from my boyfriend and would start going out with my now Dh the next year.

Looking up to see what was Friday night tv back in October'86 and it was Wogan, Blankety Blank and Dynasty. I'd probably have watched all of them with my best friend at hers. 😃

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 18/10/2024 16:48

I also had blue mascara, blue eyeliner and a perm.

I just browsed Wikipedia to see what else happened in 1986 and Andrew and Fergie got married, unemployment was at 3m and Jeffrey Archer denied going to a prostitute (it was later proved that he did!)

I was living in a doer upper country cottage and was pregnant with my first. I took Rivals into hospital with me when I went into labour. Back then we got 4 or 5 nights as inpatients. I was living a fairly Jilly type life really. Small village where the local hunt came crashing through every few weeks, ponies escaping and eating their heads off in my garden and a local vicar who'd shag any female that showed interest. 😂

greatvisuals · 18/10/2024 17:08

Bunking off school and going round Donna's

Newterm · 18/10/2024 17:08

Being a yuppie. Going on the Beaujolais run at about this time of year (although I might be a year or so out))

VioletCrawleyForever · 18/10/2024 17:12

I was in first year at high school and in love with Morten from A-HA

000EverybodyLovesTheSunshine000 · 18/10/2024 17:22

So do we….thank you for your kind words.

OneBadKitty · 18/10/2024 17:27

I was 13! The best time to be a teen- Wham vs Duran, Madonna, A-ha and fancying the leather pants off Morten Harket, watching Grange Hill, Neighbours, The A-team, going to Youth Group and eating Caramacs until you were sick, Hubba Bubba, hanging out at the local Rec. and flirting with the boys, wearing baggy jeans and skater skirts with cricket jumpers, talking about what to do in a nuclear war and Chernobyl, playing on the ZX spectrum, watching VHS tapes, and recording the top 40 on a Sunday afternoon on your double tape deck, listing to your personal stereo, and shopping in Woolies, C&A Clockhouse, Freeman Hardy Willis, and Chelsea Girl, Reading Sweet Valley High books and swapping them with friends and not really having much to worry about.

Thevelvelletes · 18/10/2024 17:31

Still traveling the UK going to Northern soul niters.

Cynic17 · 18/10/2024 17:32

Graduating, and then starting my first job. My life was soooo boring in comparison to "Rivals" 😂

LateMumma · 18/10/2024 17:36

First year of secondary school, being bullied and hating every minute.
