Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Have you seen the man in Tampa on his boat called ‘Lieutenant Dan’ who is refusing to leave his boat? So scary.

I'm worried Dan won't make it. He rode out Helene in his boat but this is something else Sad

DS’ GF lives in Orlando and she was trying to decide whether to evacuate. Orlando isn’t under an evacuation order, but they are worried and WDW etc will be closing.

There are some people who maybe can’t afford to evacuate but the gridlocking was entirely avoidable. This storm has been being reported since late last week, so those who can evacuate had the opportunity to do so before now.

In terms of Orlando, typically the hurricane starts to lose a lot of force once it hits land, but they will still get the heavy rain.

Jsogs · 08/10/2024 22:55

Orlando is still predicted to get hurricane force winds. This is going to be a mess for everyone in that region. Planes full of Brits flew into Orlando today. Utter fools.

I'm shocked this isn't bigger news in the uk. Thousands of uk tourists will be in Florida atm surely? Won't they be closing the Disney/universal resorts? Are the uk your companies flying people home????

It has been in all the news yesterday and all day today, headlining tonight. A lot of airports have been closed down or cancelled flights.

It is the top headline on the BBC News app.

It looks horrendous! It's been reupgraded to a category 5 storm. We can only hope it weakens before it makes landfall.

TeenLifeMum · 08/10/2024 23:16

They get told to evacuate all the bloody time. It’s like if we were told Covid was back and we had to stay home, no one would.

i have family on the west coast of Florida and they never evacuate. You end up stuck on a high way with no fuel in a much riskier position. They have a hurricane room in the centre of the house (no windows and like a walk in wardrobe that’s bigger than my living room with a toilet off it) and storm shutters that cover the windows. They stock up on food and settle in for it to pass. They’re in their 80s and willing to take the risk.

a few years ago there was a huge one and the rest of the family was worried they didn’t evacuate. There was radio silence for 48 hours as they lost power and phones ran out of battery… then they sent a photo of my aunt watching the storm by the window with a glass of wine.

It’s the third time they’ve been told to evacuate this year. If you don’t have a storm room etc then yes, a wooden house will likely be deadly but lots of homes are prepped.

StrongFemaleCharacter · 08/10/2024 23:24

So worrying. I wonder how this will affect the elections? Trump's a climate change denier isn't he?

MoleAndBadger · 08/10/2024 23:29

It's terrifying. I can't really appreciate how scary it must be.

How does the average person evacuate? Where do you go to / how do you afford to go out of State with your family and pets? What if you don't have a vehicle?

RedToothBrush · 08/10/2024 23:30

DH company told everyone to stop work and get out. This is exceptionally unusally. It wasn't that simple though. One of his colleagues was saying it was a 9 hour drive out but there was only 12 hours to do it in. And the traffic was impossible so he made the decision to stay put rather than get caught out stuck on the road in his car with his family.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/10/2024 23:32

Was chatting with our (adult) son today about our favourite ridiculous movies. Day After Tomorrow was always one of mine but it doesn’t feel quite so ridiculous these days.

Not religious, can’t send prayers, but all good wishes to the people of Florida.

TTPDTS · 08/10/2024 23:38

Honestly there's a lot of misinformation online too - although fuel stations are busy, at least in Orlando and surrounding areas there's still lots of fuel at the big stations, they're still selling and pumping gas now!

Lots of the areas aren't under evacuation orders, the areas that are have been actively evacuating for days in the majority. Linenmen and cleanup crews are on standby with the national guard, ready and waiting. Base camps have already been set up for these people to go in and help fix the mess afterwards!

Shelters have been set up in evacuation zones, specifically for people with disabilities / pets / no where to go. Free rides in cars or on buses are being provided as is assistance for people who can't evacuate themselves.

They seem totally as prepared as they can be - emergency alerts are being sent over phones + radios to help keep people informed. It seems like it's going to be a bad one but people are preparing - hopefully not for the worst!

TequilaNights · 08/10/2024 23:38

It looks awful, the storm surge is going to be the major factor here and many people don't take this into consideration 15ft above street level in places. That's terrifying.

oakleaffy · 08/10/2024 23:41

KenAdams · 08/10/2024 15:34

They do seem to be more frequent and intense

Even the weather in UK is getting bad.
Today, the rain was sluicing down, I was soaked to the skin {as was dog} and the roads were running like rivers in places, the gutters unable to cope.

Dog had rainwater guttering off her whiskers and pulled to get into a fish and chip shop, a haven of warmth in the deluge.

Fish and chip shop man said he'd not seen anything like it.

Ontobetterthings · 08/10/2024 23:41

It said on tik tok that people staying have been asked to write their name and dob in permanent marker on their body so they can be identified easily in death. I hope that isn't true

Mmhmmn · 08/10/2024 23:43

Bananalanacake · 08/10/2024 18:19

I went to America for the first time in my life this year and loved it, was in Orlando. I'm worried about Disney World and all the people who work there, will they have to close it. And what about cruise ships, there are cruise ports at Miami and Port Canaveral, wouldn't like to be on a ship in that weather.

Er yes, definitely have to close Disney. They’re evacuating thousands of inmates from prison so I definitely don’t want to see folks trying to queue up for hot dogs 🌭 and the magic palace 🏰 or whatever it’s called!

HollyIvie · 08/10/2024 23:43

I've been following the storm on the Fox weather channel. Certainly seems to have the potential for a lot of devastation. Even worse for some of the communities trying to recover after the last one. Must be terrifying for people in the path.

That would be sobering.

KenAdams · 08/10/2024 23:49

Can anyone link to the Hilton Clearwater webcam please? I love it there but it's so flat, it will be devastated.

I have a friend near Cocoa Beach and they aren't sure how badly it will hit them yet as the trajectory keeps shifting slightly.

I can't imagine people who are too poor to evacuate to just be left there that's utterly heartbreaking.

The BBC kept showing a Tweet from that Marjorie person saying the government were controlling the weather but I can't find it.

They asked people to do it for the last hurricane a couple of weeks ago.

This one is much more worrying and there's a real risk of it being as bad as Katrina. The videos about the level the storm surge could reach are frightening. Its two storeys high. People got caught out by this during Katina - they flooded on the second flood and then went up into the loft, but couldn't get out and the drowned. The advice is now to make sure you have a way to get onto the roof if you need to - by making sure you havea axe.

I don't think I want to ever live by the coast. Anywhere.

KenAdams · 08/10/2024 23:54

For people thinking Orlando won't be affected that is incorrect.

Many people lost their vehicles or their vehicles were damaged by Helene. Fuel is running very low in many places too.

So scary. What a position to be in. And even those with vehicles - the tailbacks in direction of leaving are enormous

RedToothBrush · 08/10/2024 23:56

Pic says it all.

Evacuation just not a realistic possibilty for everyone.
