I'm planning my wedding and reeeeeeeeally want a punk pop/emo theme going on in the night!
We've created a list of songs, with a mix of stuff everyone will know, but also stuff that we really want. If you're over 50 (especially over 60!) can you tell me how much you know from my list! Also, your approx age please, if you don't mind! I really don't want to annoy half the crowd!
For reference, I'm almost 40 and there will be lots our age there, but also lots in their late 50s and 60s, and a few 70s.

Reef - Place your Hands
The 1975 - Tootimetootimetootime, I'm in Love With You
Drowning Pool - Let the Bodies Hit the Floor
Tina Turner - Proud Mary
The Killers - Mr Brightside
Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Meatloaf - I Would Do Anything For Love
Walk the Moon - Shut Up and Dance
Def Leopard - Pour Some Sugar
Lynyrd skynyrd- Sweet Home Alabama
Bon Jovi - Always
4 Non Blondes - What's Up
Busted - What I Go to School For
Don McLean - American Pie
Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
Paramore - Misery Business
Blink 182- Always, Feeling This
Fall Out Boy - Grand Theft Autumn, A Little Less Sixteen Candles...
Oasis - Cigarettes and Alcohol, Whatever
Good Charlotte - The River
Sum 41 - Fat Lip, In Too Deep
Avril Lavigne - sk8r boi
Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag
Blur - Girls and Boys, Parklife
Panic! at the Disco - I Write Sins, Lying is the Most Fun...
All Time Low - Dear Maria, Weightless
All American Rejects - Gives you Hell, Dirty Little Secret
New Found Glory - My Friends Over You
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Smash Mouth - All Star
The Dandy Warhols - Bohemien Like You
Lit - My Own Worst Enemy
Bullet For My Valentine - Hearts Burst in to Fire
American Hi-fi - Flavour of the Weak
The Offspring - Pretty Fly, Original Prankster
MGMT - Time to Pretend
James - Sit Down, Laid
OPM - Heaven is a Half Pipe
Bowling For Soup - Girl All the Bad Guys Want

I'm 50 and know all of them.
Already got 1975 as today's earworm funnily enough......

Peclet · 07/10/2024 14:58

I know the majority of these songs.

I like about 20% of them.

NinetyNineOrangeBalloons · 07/10/2024 15:01

I’m only in my mid 40s but only know 15 of them. Asked my 70+ year old mother and she knows 3.

I think it possibly depends more on music taste than age - it’s your wedding so definitely have what you like, but if people aren’t into that kind of music I don’t think they’ll know everything.

Let the Bodies Hit the Floor isn't really lovely weddingy music is it?

Pirri · 07/10/2024 15:09

I'm 66 and know about a quarter or fewer. Not many I like besides What's Up. My idea of punk would be Stranglers.
My DC are mid 20s and we're into Wheatus and Fall Out Boy in their early teens so around 2010 or so.
American Pie is an odd choice, I loved it when it came out, early 70s but it's not punk or emo, it was very uncool even at the time.

Age is no help really, I was into heavy metal, rock and blues, Bowie while others my age preferred the Bay City Rollers or pop.

Having said that it's your do. Choose what you and your contemporaries love, not what the old relatives may or may not like.

Fizzadora · 07/10/2024 15:11

I'm 64 and know 13 of those.
Thankfully I'm going a bit deaf in one ear so wouldn't really notice anyway.
Is it dance music or just background? If the latter please don't have it so loud that people (older people especially) can't have a conversation - they usually just want a catch up with long lost relatives and don't really give a stuff about whether you and your friends are having a screaming time recreating your youth.
Don't play Mr Brightside, it's really naff.
Have a great evening🥳

Dawevi · 07/10/2024 15:12

I'm 49 and know most of those, there's also some I probably know but don't know the name of as that often happens.

girljulian · 07/10/2024 15:15

New Found Glory! Not heard anyone mention them in a long time.

I'm mid-thirties and was into "skater" music at school so lots of these bands of that type ring a bell, but there will definitely be many many people utterly confused by NFG, The Offspring, etc, unfortunately!

VeryQuaintIrene · 07/10/2024 15:15

60 and know about 30% or them.

ceecee32 · 07/10/2024 15:22

I'm 60. Don't know many.....The Jam, The Smiths, The Clash, Buzzcocks ??

It's a party, no chance for talking! Sorry, have to go outside for that!

I'm 58, and the sing that always gets me on the dance floor is Titanium.

Awdecca · 07/10/2024 16:15

(I know all of them but probably wouldn't dance to about 70% of them)

We actually have it in our wedding breakfast music! Accoustic version by Boyce Avenue!

That MGmt song is impossible to dance to.

Remember us late fifties were the OG ravers!

Boredmum24 · 07/10/2024 16:18

I'm 59 and know 17

Hahaha! It's more for the end of the night! We manage to group dance to it pretty well!

I’m 59 and know about 5 of these, and not for a moment would I have associated this playlist with punk or emo. Personally I love Sweet Home Alabama and don’t mind American Pie, but punk they ain’t. I’d be more on board with The Jam, The Cure, New Order, New Romantic bands maybe? Obviously it’s your wedding, your choice, though. Would agree with PP that if the music is loud and older guests don’t know it and are expected to go outside to be able to talk to each other, they might have a fairly dismal time. I’d not expect music to be chosen with me in mind, but I would be disappointed if there was nowhere I could hear myself speak except the car park either …

ThisMustBeMyDream · 07/10/2024 16:34

@TarnishedMoonstone It's punk pop, a genre in itself, not punk. But not all the playlist, there is other stuff in for others eg Whitney, Oasis, Bon Jovi etc.

In.over 60. I only know 6 of them. I wouldn't call any of the ones I know punk though

I'm 65 and know 14 of them

We had Metallica and Slipknot at ours 😆

StillAtTheRestaurant · 07/10/2024 16:42

Ah, Teenage Dirtbag, that well-known wedding song! 😉😂 Did Don't Cha not make the cut?!
Seriously though, I'm 44 and I know about ten of them.

MermaidEyes · 07/10/2024 16:43

I know pretty much all of them. I assume most of the guests will be rockers of some description judging by that playlist.
