I'm planning my wedding and reeeeeeeeally want a punk pop/emo theme going on in the night!
We've created a list of songs, with a mix of stuff everyone will know, but also stuff that we really want. If you're over 50 (especially over 60!) can you tell me how much you know from my list! Also, your approx age please, if you don't mind! I really don't want to annoy half the crowd!
For reference, I'm almost 40 and there will be lots our age there, but also lots in their late 50s and 60s, and a few 70s.

Reef - Place your Hands
The 1975 - Tootimetootimetootime, I'm in Love With You
Drowning Pool - Let the Bodies Hit the Floor
Tina Turner - Proud Mary
The Killers - Mr Brightside
Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Meatloaf - I Would Do Anything For Love
Walk the Moon - Shut Up and Dance
Def Leopard - Pour Some Sugar
Lynyrd skynyrd- Sweet Home Alabama
Bon Jovi - Always
4 Non Blondes - What's Up
Busted - What I Go to School For
Don McLean - American Pie
Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
Paramore - Misery Business
Blink 182- Always, Feeling This
Fall Out Boy - Grand Theft Autumn, A Little Less Sixteen Candles...
Oasis - Cigarettes and Alcohol, Whatever
Good Charlotte - The River
Sum 41 - Fat Lip, In Too Deep
Avril Lavigne - sk8r boi
Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag
Blur - Girls and Boys, Parklife
Panic! at the Disco - I Write Sins, Lying is the Most Fun...
All Time Low - Dear Maria, Weightless
All American Rejects - Gives you Hell, Dirty Little Secret
New Found Glory - My Friends Over You
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Smash Mouth - All Star
The Dandy Warhols - Bohemien Like You
Lit - My Own Worst Enemy
Bullet For My Valentine - Hearts Burst in to Fire
American Hi-fi - Flavour of the Weak
The Offspring - Pretty Fly, Original Prankster
MGMT - Time to Pretend
James - Sit Down, Laid
OPM - Heaven is a Half Pipe
Bowling For Soup - Girl All the Bad Guys Want

Am 52 and off the top of my head know 18 by the name, but probably more if I heard them. I love dancing but there's very few on your list that would entice me to the floor. If you want everyone to enjoy the music, in my opinion, you need some 70s disco (Donna Summer/Earth, Wind & Fire), 80s The Cure/Erasure/Fame, 90s pop/dance (Backstreet Boys/2 Unlimited) and of course Abba 💃

No Green Day?

No, I Like Green Day, but there isn't anything that we think both others will know AND will be danced to. Other than Good Riddance, but I don't actually rate that song!

I'm 52 and know about 20 of them

We have a list of no plays and some of what others are suggesting are on that list (Erasure, looking at you!). We do have covers of some of the songs though (Wheatus did a belting cover of A Little Respect!).

I'm 54 and know 31 of these by name. I might know the rest when I hear them.

I realise you want to have a theme, but in my experience, the best weddings I have been to is when the DJ can read the room well. Is there a lot of point of playing a set list if people aren't getting up to dance?

The party is more for the guests to enjoy I've always thought. It's them who are going to make the night into a good party atmosphere.

Perhaps give the DJ your ideas but let him be a bit flexible I say.

Verite1 · 07/10/2024 17:42

I'm late 40s and know most of them. We had an Indie pop playlist for our wedding, with a bit of 70s/80s cheese added in.

Rowansiskin · 07/10/2024 17:44

I know most of them but wouldn’t call them punk. Post-punk maybe. You need The Damned - Wait for The Blackout and The Ramones on here and, as a PP said, the Buzzcocks. All as danceable as your playlist.

Kneeslikethese · 07/10/2024 17:46

I'm 52. I know 19 of them, wouldn't dance to them all though. Definitely keep the cheesy ones, that's that'll get people up.

I’m 59 and know about 5 of these, and not for a moment would I have associated this playlist with punk or emo. Personally I love Sweet Home Alabama and don’t mind American Pie, but punk they ain’t. I’d be more on board with The Jam, The Cure, New Order, New Romantic bands maybe? Obviously it’s your wedding, your choice, though. Would agree with PP that if the music is loud and older guests don’t know it and are expected to go outside to be able to talk to each other, they might have a fairly dismal time. I’d not expect music to be chosen with me in mind, but I would be disappointed if there was nowhere I could hear myself speak except the car park either …

I'm with you. OP, I appreciate how difficult it is to get a playlist that you love and everyone else knows and wants to dance to. If everyone at the wedding likes that kind of music then it's much easier. But it's the reason I won't have a party and play all the music I love. It would be me in a room on my own 😁

The weddings or parties I've been to where everyone has enjoyed a more unusual playlist have been the ones where a really good band have been playing the songs.

Sesma · 07/10/2024 17:47

I'm mid 60s and know 17 of them, why not play some of the popular 70s and 80s music, your list sounds a bit obscure to me @Newterm has a good list, that most will have heard of

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/10/2024 17:48

I’m 54. I know 18 of them and would dance to 10.

It's not a set list, the DJ will be free to make the choices! We just gave some ideas of things we like. The DJ will be responsible for reading the room! I'm just curious as to whether our elders may know the music. I'd rather not ask each individual person. Plus we want to keep it a surprise! There will be other genres played!

MumblesParty · 07/10/2024 17:49

I’m 57 and I know 15 of them. Not really my sort of music. Now if you were planning 80s pop, it would be different!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/10/2024 17:49

I think quite a lot of them are too niche for many people to recognise tbh.

SoManyTshirts · 07/10/2024 17:49

I’m 65 and I know about a dozen of these - I’m more 70s rock and rhythm & blues orientated. Associate “Sit Down” with funerals.

I don’t expect to know all the music at the younger generation’s parties though. If it isn’t rap or reggae and has a discernible beat to dance to, I’m happy.

There are some hits that may be on your no list that are more than likely going to get people up and moving. ABBA, The Bangles, Wham, Human League, Michael Jackson etc

This age group will get up for these.

NewName24 · 07/10/2024 17:52

I'm 60, and the only ones I know from your list are the following.

Tina Turner - Proud Mary
Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Meatloaf - I Would Do Anything For Love
Lynyrd skynyrd- Sweet Home Alabama
Busted - What I Go to School For
Don McLean - American Pie
Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag
James - Sit Down

but if you are wanting people to get up and dance, I think only about 2 of those would be something I would dance to.

SilverPearl · 07/10/2024 17:52

Over 60 and know them all but always think of Reef as “Put your hands up” so would never win Pop Master.

NewName24 · 07/10/2024 17:56

ThisMustBeMyDream · 07/10/2024 16:14

It's a party, no chance for talking! Sorry, have to go outside for that!

Wow !

I like a dance as much as anyone else - in fact, more than a lot of people - but there will always be people who don't, and also, all the people who can't dance all night.

Of course you have to cater for all ages, but I have found that the younger generation all know 80s music pretty well. My DC are early 20s and we go out dancing together sometimes. The 80s / 90s music gets every age group up from my experience.

Congratulations and enjoy your wedding. 💐

Sesma · 07/10/2024 17:58

I think you need very popular, well known songs rather than personal choice. If I organised a wedding and I chose my personal choice, people would probably walk out or go to sleep😆

TylerEndicott · 07/10/2024 18:00

We went to a wedding where the invitation asked people to write their favourite party songs on their RSVP, I thought that was a good idea.

lolaran · 07/10/2024 18:01

55 and know 20 of them

Evenstar · 07/10/2024 18:02

17 songs but most of the groups and I am 60, not sure most people my age or over would know most of them or want to dance to those.

BrooookeDavis · 07/10/2024 18:02

Mr Brightside has to be last song played. It's a 40+ rule.
