I'm planning my wedding and reeeeeeeeally want a punk pop/emo theme going on in the night!
We've created a list of songs, with a mix of stuff everyone will know, but also stuff that we really want. If you're over 50 (especially over 60!) can you tell me how much you know from my list! Also, your approx age please, if you don't mind! I really don't want to annoy half the crowd!
For reference, I'm almost 40 and there will be lots our age there, but also lots in their late 50s and 60s, and a few 70s.

Reef - Place your Hands
The 1975 - Tootimetootimetootime, I'm in Love With You
Drowning Pool - Let the Bodies Hit the Floor
Tina Turner - Proud Mary
The Killers - Mr Brightside
Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Meatloaf - I Would Do Anything For Love
Walk the Moon - Shut Up and Dance
Def Leopard - Pour Some Sugar
Lynyrd skynyrd- Sweet Home Alabama
Bon Jovi - Always
4 Non Blondes - What's Up
Busted - What I Go to School For
Don McLean - American Pie
Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
Paramore - Misery Business
Blink 182- Always, Feeling This
Fall Out Boy - Grand Theft Autumn, A Little Less Sixteen Candles...
Oasis - Cigarettes and Alcohol, Whatever
Good Charlotte - The River
Sum 41 - Fat Lip, In Too Deep
Avril Lavigne - sk8r boi
Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag
Blur - Girls and Boys, Parklife
Panic! at the Disco - I Write Sins, Lying is the Most Fun...
All Time Low - Dear Maria, Weightless
All American Rejects - Gives you Hell, Dirty Little Secret
New Found Glory - My Friends Over You
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Smash Mouth - All Star
The Dandy Warhols - Bohemien Like You
Lit - My Own Worst Enemy
Bullet For My Valentine - Hearts Burst in to Fire
American Hi-fi - Flavour of the Weak
The Offspring - Pretty Fly, Original Prankster
MGMT - Time to Pretend
James - Sit Down, Laid
OPM - Heaven is a Half Pipe
Bowling For Soup - Girl All the Bad Guys Want

My nephew also had a space on his RSVP’s to choose a song, might give you more of a mix that would appeal to all the guests.

AtomicBlondeRose · 07/10/2024 18:04

What’s the problem with a song being naff at a wedding?! Everyone goes mad for naff songs at wedding receptions? They’re not meant to be cool ffs.

NiftyZebra · 07/10/2024 18:05

I'm 61 and know 11 of them most of which I'd describe as rock.

I'm 50 and I know all of them and I reallllllllyyyyy wanna come to your wedding 😂😜

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/10/2024 18:07

55
Know them all.
I imagine you will have some sitting down for certain songs as they are not really songs to dance to.

Doggymummar · 07/10/2024 18:07

55 and was a Goth, so don't know many of those. Have a look at Now 1995!

PickAChew · 07/10/2024 18:08

They'll be asleep on their quiche by the time they get through all the verses of American Pie. It's a dirge.

MrsPeterHarris · 07/10/2024 18:08

Verite1 · 07/10/2024 17:42

I'm late 40s and know most of them. We had an Indie pop playlist for our wedding, with a bit of 70s/80s cheese added in.

This for me too!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/10/2024 18:12

PickAChew · 07/10/2024 18:08

Yep. Dreadful choice and definitely not a song to dance to!

workplaceshenanigans · 07/10/2024 18:18

I'm just over 60 and know ten of them (I might recognise some of the others if I heard them, but I'm not familiar with the titles).

Sorry, but there you go.

merrymelodies · 07/10/2024 18:30

Awdecca · 07/10/2024 16:15

(I know all of them but probably wouldn't dance to about 70% of them)

I agree. I'm 60, FWIW.

AmusedMaker · 07/10/2024 18:31

You’re seriously lacking some good Motown stuff which the 60 +’age group would love.

Newterm · 07/10/2024 17:26

I’m in my sixties. I’d suggest

the Jam. Start, Tube Station at Midnight, David Watts, Elton rifles
ELO. Mr Blue Sky
Wax. Bridge to your Heart
Rolling Stones. Let’s spend the night together
Oasis. Roll with it
Dexys. Celtic Soul Brothers
echo and the bunnymen. Seven seas
adam ant. Ant music
heaven 17. Temptation
teardrop explodes. Reward
manic street preachers. Design for life
xtc. Plans for nigel
the beat. Mirror in the bathroom
specials. Gangsters
the associates. Party fears two

😀

This is MUCH more to my taste

IMO they make people head to the bar not the dancefloor.

ShiteRider · 07/10/2024 18:37

murphys · 07/10/2024 17:41

I'm 54 and know 31 of these by name. I might know the rest when I hear them.

I realise you want to have a theme, but in my experience, the best weddings I have been to is when the DJ can read the room well. Is there a lot of point of playing a set list if people aren't getting up to dance?

The party is more for the guests to enjoy I've always thought. It's them who are going to make the night into a good party atmosphere.

Perhaps give the DJ your ideas but let him be a bit flexible I say.

This. My stepdaughter and step son both curated their own wedding playlists. Everyone just sat awkwardly and no one danced till at stepdaughters wedding they agreed for the DJ to read the room and play what people except them and a few friends wanted to listen to.

Step son, no one danced until the last song and this was only because they dragged everyone up on the dance floor.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 07/10/2024 17:39

We have a list of no plays and some of what others are suggesting are on that list (Erasure, looking at you!). We do have covers of some of the songs though (Wheatus did a belting cover of A Little Respect!).

What's wrong with Erasure?

Sorry OP, I'm 58 and 35 years ago I was going to warehouse raves and free parties. I wouldn't dance to loads of those on your list.

Haggia · 07/10/2024 18:42

I’m mid 50s. Know most of them, would get up to three to dance.

I’d love to hear..

Done Too Much - Specials
Geno - Dexys
Union City Blue - Blondie
On My Radio - Selector
Video Killed The Radio Star - Buggles
The Prince - Madness

Haggia · 07/10/2024 18:43

Erasure - Sometimes! Absolute classic

BestIsWest · 07/10/2024 18:43

62, know about 25 from your list but as it sounds like my DDs playlist from her teenage emo days, I probably know more.

@newterm, now that’s a list!

undripfeedswede · 07/10/2024 18:44

I'm mid 50s, know prob about 70%. Don't like many of them. Not that that matters. So much good stuff of all genres that older people will know as well as younger) (rock, ska, soul, reggae, pop, indie, dance music etc) , much of this is quite bad soft rock and sort of throwaway pop rock.

ShiteRider · 07/10/2024 18:45

Exactly

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/10/2024 16:54

No real Punk? No Ska or Two-Tone? No Misfits? Ramones, Blondie, The Damned, Pistols, Clash, Eddie & the Hotrods?

It's all a bit, umm, Magic FM.

Even some 4-to-the-floor disco and pretty much anything ever done by the Pet Shop Boys and Erasure would be more edgy than Mr Bloody Brightside.

This really, why play this crap when you could have some of this! Flowers

whoami24601 · 07/10/2024 18:49

ThisMustBeMyDream · 07/10/2024 16:13

It doesn't need to be! It's fun to dance to and sing!

And it's AMAZING! I'm the wrong age to answer your question, but can I come to your wedding? That playlist looks ace 👌

Age 57. I guess we just have different tastes, I'm more 80s, 2 tone, new romantic, The Jam, The Clash, The Stranglers. I'd be out in the foyer chatting with your playlist, sorry. TBH the best thing about weddings is catching up with people you haven't seen for ages.

Same! Agree
I really don't like a lot of these and of the 50% I do know. Im not sure I'd be getting up to dance to many of them. Sorry OP.
I'm 53

Redflagsabounded · 07/10/2024 18:55

I'm 58 and know 80% of those songs. I'd enjoy this set. There's a few I don't like, but you can't please everyone all the time.

American Pie is an absolute pig to dance to.

Mr Bright side is an absolute banger, wherever it's played the crowd go wild singing.

A real punk or new wave song or two makes my day if I'm at an event, even if it's at the lighter end of the scale. Blondie always seems to go down well with the ahem older crowd. Two-tone is also massive for my age group.

What I really dislike at weddings, and you seem to be avoiding this, but most wedding DJs do it, is a looooong segment of 1960s pop. Pins and needles type.
