How many countries have you been to in Europe?

When I was a little girl, I never had a burning desire about my career, or relationships.

I just remember always having one strong goal, that I thought about a lot.

It was to see every country in Europe before I die. Its still something I think about, and I'm determined to get there one day.

I'm 40. And I've still only seen just over half of the countries in Europe. I think I've seen around 25. I'll have to add them up, but I know it's around that.

It seems to take so long to get to my goal, because I have so little annual leave, and I'm too tired at the weekend to do a weekend quick trip.

But one day I'll get there!

I just thought it might be an interesting thread.

How many countries have you seen in Europe?

About 13 I think.

Positivenancy · 02/10/2024 09:48

Not many…
UK
Ireland
France
Belgium
Spain
Italy
Switzerland
Austria
Greece

BuzzieLittleBee · 02/10/2024 09:50

Depends what you mean by 'seen'. Does a work overnighter (arrive, dinner, sleep, meeting, fly home) in Poland count? I had a lovely meal in the main square, but wouldn't say I'd 'seen' Warsaw (much less Poland).

If it's just about having been there, for an overnight or more, then I've been to:
Ireland
Belgium
Netherlands
France
Spain
Portugal
Italy
Greece
Hungary
Poland
Czechia
Slovenia
Croatia
Denmark
Finland
Norway
Austria
Switzerland
Germany
Vatican City (seems daft to count it, but it is a state in its own right)

So that's 21, including UK. Seems I've got a long way to go! Montenegro and the Baltic countries are high on my hit list.

Boobygravy · 02/10/2024 09:50

I've been to Madeira but not Portugal, Corfu but not Greece.
Are you counting Scotland and Wales as individual countries?

If you've been to Madeira, you've been to Portugal. Same with Corfu - it's part of Greece.

If you'd been to the Isle of Wight, then you could say you'd been to the UK.

You mean mainland Portugal and Greece? Madeira and Corfu ARE Portugal and Greece.

OP I´ve been to few, mainly because I use my holidays to visit family, so just UK, France, Spain and Greece. To Switzerland and Italy only at transit airports...

Nannyoggapple · 02/10/2024 09:54

I went to Swtizerland for the first time this year, and I was so happy.

I was thinking "I've finally made it to Switzerland! At 40"

Including the UK I've been to 10. So really not that many at all. And that's all the countries I've been to, I've never gone further than Europe.

Would love to explore more, but time & money are always factors.

Plus we have so much to explore on our doorstep, so many beautiful places I still want to see in this country

NuffSaidSam · 02/10/2024 09:56

23 I think. I'm very poorly travelled outside of Europe though.

England
Portugal
Spain
France
Russia
Germany
Italy
Netherlands
Belgium
Czech Republic
Sweden
Greece
Austria
Switzerland
Denmark
Finland
Norway
Croatia
Slovenia
Estonia
Montenegro
Iceland
Monaco

Scoobyblue · 02/10/2024 09:57

I’ve been to 15. I’m surprised it’s so low because I like holidays abroad. But I’ve been to lots of different parts of France, Spain and Italy on separate holidays so I haven’t ticked off many other countries. It’s a great aim though and I’m now going to think more about Eastern Europe.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 02/10/2024 09:58

Six.
Norway
Ireland
Germany
France
Belgium
Luxembourg.

Eight, if you rate Jersey and Guernsey as outside the UK.

loropianalover · 02/10/2024 09:59

Once I thought about it, it was more than I initially remembered! I’m not a big traveller these days.

Germany
Denmark
France
Monaco
Spain
Portugal
Italy
Malta
Croatia
Cyprus
Montenegro
Bosnia & Herz.
England
Wales
Ireland
Netherlands

Would love to go to Scotland next 😊

KatieL5 · 02/10/2024 09:59

I’ve been to every European country except for Kosovo.

ShanghaiDiva · 02/10/2024 09:59

Around 30..most recently Albania and North Macedonia.
I have a similar goal in life- to visit more countries than my age and currently on 62.

LaMarschallin · 02/10/2024 10:00

I've been to 13 (14 if you count the Vatican City, as the list of 44 countries I checked did).

Boobygravy
Are you counting Scotland and Wales as individual countries?
I wouldn't as they don't fit the Pointless definition of "a sovereign state that is a member of the UN in its own right" which seems a fair description.
The Replies of Ireland would count.

Positivenancy · 02/10/2024 10:04

ah…i forgot I’ve been to Yugoslavia…which is now Serbia and Montenegro 😅

The former Yugoslavia is more than just Serbia and Montenegro - 7 current countries were part of Yugoslavia before it split

Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia

Caspianberg · 02/10/2024 10:08

If you have limited time, the best way is multi county trips in one week.
There’s some European counties that are much closer together than others, so it’s easier to fit in 2-3 in one week

ie Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg could easily be done by train between counties

Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. You can actually do all three in an hour technically if you fly into Trieste Italy, and follow the coast down to Piran Slovenia, then Umag in Croatia. But a week would nicely allow you a few days in each.

Germany and Austria - Munich to Salzburg is an easy 2 hr train ride. So a multi city long weekend also possible (Fri-Mon). If you fly into one airport and back from the other

StellaSmile · 02/10/2024 10:11

Only 14!
I'm surprised by how few that is.

Iceland booked for next year so soon to be 15 Grin

Yes but the area I went to was Serbia and montenegro initially I suppose…so Montenegro now.

That's interesting because I was actually thinking of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia as my next trip.

The only thing putting me off is no one I know wants to come with me this year.

And I've done a lot of solo travel when I was younger.

I feel I don't have the energy anymore to do three countries solo travel by myself.

Its a lot of train station planning, and hotel booking. I also don't really fancy going with a group of strangers (group trip)

Maybe I'll be able to get someone I know to come with me next year. It depends on what annual leave they have.
