How many countries have you been to in Europe?

When I was a little girl, I never had a burning desire about my career, or relationships.

I just remember always having one strong goal, that I thought about a lot.

It was to see every country in Europe before I die. Its still something I think about, and I'm determined to get there one day.

I'm 40. And I've still only seen just over half of the countries in Europe. I think I've seen around 25. I'll have to add them up, but I know it's around that.

It seems to take so long to get to my goal, because I have so little annual leave, and I'm too tired at the weekend to do a weekend quick trip.

But one day I'll get there!

I just thought it might be an interesting thread.

How many countries have you seen in Europe?

If you had yo choose a favourite country, which one would you choose?

I think I would choose Denmark

Faroe Islands. Not strictly a country but they are self governing so pretty close!

Abracadabra12345 · 02/10/2024 22:21

@BuzzieLittleBee
What a great reply! We went to Slovenia this year and it's all you've described. I would highly recommend, highly recommend it

Ah! They're owned by Denmark, is that right?

I'd love to go to.

I'd love to go to.

They’re officially part of Denmark but they pretty much govern themselves.

Definitely worth a visit. The scenery is spectacular.

BuzzieLittleBee · 02/10/2024 22:38

@Ezekiela - good point! I've ignored my own definition of 'been to'. I haven't stayed overnight in Vatican City. Although I'd say that places like Monaco, San Marino and Vatican can be visited in a day and don't need an overnight to claim a spot on the visited list!

BananaSplitSandwich · 02/10/2024 22:40

France, Spain, Italy, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Iceland, Switzerland.

Can’t remember if there’s any others. So, eight that I can think of.

Jarviscockateel · 02/10/2024 22:44

I've been to 36. Only a few more to cross off! I'd never been abroad until I met DH at the age of 33 and in the last 17 years have been to 65 countries. Love travelling.

Kendodd · 02/10/2024 23:06

To all those saying Cyprus, Cyprus is actually (supposedly) in West Asia, not Europe.
Meanwhile, Georgia, is Europe!

blackheartsgirl · 02/10/2024 23:17

Went interrailing when I was 19. So many places to go and go back to! I'd love to do more Spain and France, also more of Southern Italy, plus the ones I've not been to.

DH and I argued about the definition of "been to" because I said you have to stay a night to count a country, not just pass through, but he says "Where did you spend the day, then?"

Both agree in transit & staying airside doesn't count.

I remember reading a great quote once.

It said

"why live in a box, when you have the whole world".

It's there to be seen!

Nannyoggapple · 03/10/2024 13:42

I was just reading about a woman who was nearly 80, and she had seen every country in the world.

She did a lot of travelling in her sixties and seventies.

Nannyoggapple · 03/10/2024 13:45

I also got chatting to another inspirational woman a couple of months ago. She was in her fifties, and she said that she did solo travel every month to somewhere new.

Like a lot of things we are told that we can only do things when we are young.

But we can do them at any age!

20ish, depending on your definition of a “country” and “in Europe”! (Wales, Kosovo, Cyprus…)

RandomUsernameHere · 03/10/2024 14:10

UK (only England and Wales)
France
Switzerland
Monaco
Austria
Italy
Spain
Greece
Portugal
Jersey (aware this is a crown dependency not a country, but my list is short so I'm including it)!

Forgot Cyprus
