Talking about Trussmageddon, official video in tweet

https://x.com/MichaelTakeMP/status/1838110897161560431

Liz Truss shows how the economic establishment got rid of her & created an economic doomloop.
Liz is standing to be leader of the Liz Truss Party.
She is our Maggie
Our Mum
Our Anton Du Beke
Thankfully this lovely lady still wants to trickle down on us.

I am now certain Truss posts on MN!

PandoraSox · 23/09/2024 12:06

Rachel Reeves has clearly been told to smile more during her speech. It is not quite working.

PandoraSox · 23/09/2024 12:10

Ooh. Hecklers escorted out.

Evenstar · 23/09/2024 12:12

One of the security guards actually put his hands round a heckler’s throat 😮

Wonder what the public response would be if RR decided to cut schools budget or whatever to fund the WFA ? And I find it ironic that the DM didn’t create the same fuss when the uplift was withdrawn from UC after the pandemic.

Both excellent points. I think the threshold of the WFA is going to have to be raised otherwise it’s going to rumble on all winter. I bet the Tory press has already lined up pensioners to be photographed wrapped in blankets next to cold radiators.

Yes I'd be happy with that. As long as the RW media then don't start bleating on about how it's going to be funded.

Given that Hunt was promising tax cuts that he knew fine well couldn’t be funded and actually handed out unaffordable NI cuts, they’d be very foolish to do that. I’m sure I read somewhere that Reeves has a bit of unexpected headroom from government bonds - has anyone else seen it or did I dream it?

DuncinToffee · 23/09/2024 12:37

The Telegraph is reporting that the Treasury has now ruled out getting rid of the council tax single person discount in the coming budget.

I never took that rumour seriously but it’s good to have it confirmed. That would have hit single parents hard.

Presumably because it would disproportionately affect pensioners and single parents! The Treasury are dalek like in their insensitive approach. It is up to a Labour Chancellor to moderate that tendency

cardibach · 23/09/2024 12:44

Also presumably because it’s not something the Westminster government can do U.K. wide…
It was never a credible rumour.

bombastix · 23/09/2024 12:49

I confess that I do think Labour have fluffed their comms strategy. This is supposed to be about a growth agenda. A strategy both for business and trade to deliver it. Reeves is not talking about how that will be delivered.

Exactly. It was pure rubbish from the start. Will shut up some frothers at least!

I’m not convinced they’ve even got a comms strategy! They really don’t seem to have a clue. I’m a member of an online group of current and former public sector comms people and we’re all tearing our hair out.

bombastix · 23/09/2024 13:32

I am really unimpressed tbh

Weeks ago, Rayner was asked: (by Badenough) would there be changes to CT inc removal of the SPD..... ? she replied with a simple "NO"

I've no idea why the media continued to push this.... who can tell me??

I think Labour have been overwhelmed by the amount of attention they have had on riots/prisons/wfa and various false rumours on budget decisions.

I also think that winning a GE and then going straight into Summer Recess has allowed a vacuum to form, one which the tory media have been happy to fill.

Possibly why the GE was called for July.

BIossomtoes · 23/09/2024 13:58

That’s a good point but it still doesn’t excuse not having a strategy, prepared in opposition, setting out the direction of travel and how various policies play into that.

It sells papers?

A lot of headlines contain the word 'could' which gets omitted in the resulting froth

I agree with everything you all just said!

I really hope the budget is not all doom and gloom. There needs to be a sweetener somewhere for everyone. Doing something about the ridiculous standing charges for gas and electricity would be a good one.

I hate to say it, but Starmer needs a Mandelson or a Campbell. Someone wily and ruthless to manage the comms.

@Piggywaspushed hope you feel a bit better soon.

I hope they don't raise taxes.

Everyone is bleating on about him easing our taxes and pensions.

He needs to find a way to avoid it or it'll be game over.

Leniriefenstahl · 23/09/2024 16:26

Reading some of the comments on SM it’s all ‘our pensioners being frozen to death’. There’s some real visceral hatred of the LP going on. I’m finding it quite worrying. Meanwhile saintly Nigel sits quietly in the corner with no scrutiny at all.
Labour really didn’t read the room with this policy although I’m not denying there is a need for some reform of it.

I’ve noticed people who weren’t political previously have been reposting memes on Facebook about WFA and other potential (imagined) Labour cuts. I also noticed multiple anti Labour comments on local groups when similar actions by the Tories went by unmentioned. I’m not sure if it’s being orchestrated centrally and if so by who.
