Where's the Greek Yogurt gone?

The real stuff not Greek style. Haven't been able to buy it in Aldi for two weeks, tried Asda today, no luck, only Greek style available. Anyone else having trouble finding it?

What's the difference?

Have noticed it's always low/no stock in Tesco lately, assumed it's down to the anti-UPF influencers (Eddie Abbew et al).

None in my local lidl yesterday or today
I'll have a walk to Waitrose later

It's strained. So much better than "Greek style".

I buy it every week from either Tescos or M&S, they've always had lots in stock

couldnt get it in my massive Sainsbury’s which normally has lots of options, only greek style. Will check Waitrose

We've had the same issue in Aldi with all
Plain/natural full fat yogurts for about 2 months. Just the awful fat free options on the shelves.

I know!! Not in my local Aldi either. I normally go for the authentic 10% stuff. I got some in Waitrose but we get through a lot and it's expensive.

Fage is Greek yoghurt! It's the Greek brand name for what we have on our shelves as Total (although they also have 'Fage' on the label)

Get mine in Lidl, Waitrose, Sainsburys sometimes M&S but the best one is from a farm shop in Tiptree. Lovely.

Oh I know! Sorry, what I meant to say was, I was buying Tesco, Sainsburys etc own brand yoghurt for years thinking it was all the same and then tried Fage in Greece and couldn't believe I've not been eating that instead all this time!!!

I gave up a year or so again. I used to really like it, but noticed the taste changed. Tried several different brands, but the taste had changed in them all. Wouldn't be surprised if they all come from the same factory, but with different branding. That could explain why there seems to be shortages now in different supermarkets (i.e. all coming from the same factory!).

I know, who wants fat free yogurt? I can't think of anything more depressing - except margarine perhaps.

OK I honestly didn't know Fage was Greek yogurt, I wondered but wasn't convinced. I think they had that in Asda but it was 0% so I assume fat free.

It's ridiculously easy to make, if necessary. Get something like a Lakeland yogurt maker. Put in 1400mls of warm milk and 2tablespoons Greek yogurt from your last pot. Leave 8 hours. There is a timer for this.

That makes yogurt.

Strain in the attached strainer for a bit. Then you have Greek yogurt! It's just strained yogurt, hence the extra protein.

You can also make ricotta.

Ps personally I use Fage as my starter batch, because I prefer its mild taste. Not all yogurt bacteria taste the same, I think.

Is the 'proper' greek yoghurt a bit more solid? I like the creaminess of the greek style.

@TheRestIsEntertainment I think greek style has thickeners added rather than the whey drained off.

I prefer skyr these days, and I realised just this morning that it's live. I feel a yoghurt making phase coming on. Straining it through muslin makes all the difference.

Fage is a LOT thicker than Tesco (or any supermarket brand) Greek yoghurt. It's lovely 😍
