Froggy, speaking of gardens... I've already been thinking about what to plant. Romaine was very successful last summer for us.
SoE, you've reminded me I also have a few boxes of pics to sort. A few years ago, just before Havoc was born, I sorted a bit and found a pic and letter from a boyfriend when I was 18. Kept it. I think I will always keep it. It's a reminder of sweet and simpler times when my whole life was in front of me and I was experiencing my first real love. 🥹

@Mumtobabyhavoc - yep. I am seeing main dentist (not root canal specialist) on Thursday for a quick check and he has said he will give me antibiotics to take with me just in case.

Poor Havoc. Hope fever goes down. At least yours are at the age you can just give them medicine. DS (23!) has been unwell since Saturday and isn’t taking anything. I’ve given cold and flu meds plus vitamins. He reckons they won’t help. Sigh. Obviously Mum knows nothing. 🤔

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/01/2025 22:13

Best laid plans gone awry: haven't been out yet. It's 2pm. 😡

I have org'd a drawer in the kitchen and fixed the sagging/broken cutlery drawer (two braces, 4 screws, a hammer and a drill); cleaned said drawer and put new cutlery organizers in; taken down and cleaned a spice rack which i'm likely throwing away (8th grade woodwork class); and taken down and thrown away a clock (family member's craft; she's dead, it's broken).

Have packed up the rest of the kitchen so counters are bare and can be removed. Have put a huge load of white towels and washcloths through 2 extra long hot stain wash cycles with bleach both times. Hoping they will be stain-free now.

Yikes @Mumtobabyhavoc you are superwoman! That level of drawer repair is definitely in my 'text bill and get him to fix it' bracket!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/01/2025 23:21

Aria, not pretty, but functional and organized!
(I'll need to add one more as I've discovered that bottom is coming off too.)🤦‍♀️

Pics. Silpat mats under to stop organizers from sliding.

Peridot, I tend to take an allergy pill, do a sinus rinse and use nasal spray when sick + drink lots of water. I'm on your team to try and relieve symptoms.
Havoc's temp is now in the 36-37c range, so we all bundled up and got out for a good 90 min walk after dinner and after getting home Havoc was asleep about 30 mins after getting into pj's 🤗

Oh! Managed to hook up a tv in one of the bedrooms last night without much trouble. Was quite proud of myself as I'm not very tech savvy and I just winged it. 😄

Next on my list will be sorting two other drawers in the kitchen and finish painting living room. It's just one large wall, but is straightforward white on white and minor dings. 🤞

Morning! I'm all for symptom relief with a cold too.

Early 20s men can be monsters. Especially the ones who've been nice teenagers ime. They grow out of it. Mine is early 30s now and rang me yesterday because he'd had a difficult day and wanted some mum love. At 23 I'd have been the last person he'd go to for advice. Treating your mum like an idiot seems to be a rite of passage 🤗 I do hope he feels better soon. Also little Havoc!

I'd be calling Bill too @Aria999 Our @Mumtobabyhavoc is very impressive, wrangling tiny tots and DIY tools ( i accidentally spelt impressive with an 'e' and my phone went for 'empress'. Empress Mumtobabyhavoc does seem quite apt I think...

I've been for a lovely walk with DD and her dog. Gorgeous way to start the day. Now I am procrastinating gently pondering on what needs doing next. It involves mumsnet and a list. Multi-tasking is what it is!

Using the 'eat the frog' technique, I have two emails and a call to get over and done with.

Then I can concentrate on the pleasure of cleaning the bath and wiping down the kitchen surfaces.

I'll be back for a round of applause when that frog is gone. In the meantime, have a great day all!

Peridot1 · 29/01/2025 09:52

Wow @Mumtobabyhavoc. I wouldn’t be safe with a drill. Well done for your repair!

So yesterday I finally cleaned the lights over the island unit. Hate doing them as my arms get sore. But I think the trick might be to do them more often so they don’t get so greasy.

Then I tackled the storage/display unit in the dining area. It’s looking a lot better but still not quite right. It has glass doors on top and lights up so needs to look tidy and “considered/styled” rather than a junk cupboard. Of course doing that has lead to needing to sort other areas of the house as I’ve moved stuff about. So glassware cupboard in the kitchen will be tackled today. And a table on the upstairs landing as I moved some things from up there to the cupboards.

Today:

  • quick kitchen wipe down and dishwasher
  • laundry
  • pt session at gym
  • glassware cupboard in kitchen
  • dust table in landing and sort that
  • start sorting clothes to pack
Have a great day all.

How did I not get back here for a whole week?! Honestly! Just shaking my head at myself. In fairness, D was off school on Monday with a bit of temp (all back to normal now), and I was working on-site yesterday and out from 7.30am to 8.30pm so that didn't help either!

To answer your question from long ago, @Mumtobabyhavoc - not exactly emigrating because Brexit, but at least will have a base to stay for longer periods, within those restrictions.

Mostly in holding-down-the-fort mode at the moment. Biggest non-routine accomplishment has been sorting out new bits of school uniform for D, she'd outgrown cardigans, tights, trousers, and needed more tops since she makes such terrible stains on them. Am due to collect them from the pick-up point today before or after my physio.

Apologies for not tagging / commenting individually but I did read through and am, as ever, impressed!!

SpiritOfEdna · 29/01/2025 11:00

mumtobabyhavoc - I did get emotional when sorting out the letters - the bulk is a correspondence I had with a student I met when studying in France, so we had maybe 4 or 5 years of prolific letter writing - him from Canada and me UK. I idly googled him one day to find out - shockingly - he had died, still at a very young age, and no reason why, but some allusions in the memorials. I don't want to re-read them, but I don't want to destroy either. My tidy mind wants them to be in chronological order and my emotional side wants to leave them be. Not a decision for today though.
Today

  • need to decide whether charity shop or vinted for some clothes have culled from wardrobe before they sneak back in!
  • ironing
  • just bought a shredder so can attack the filing cabinet, arrives tomorrow
  • a load of washing needs doing
  • trip to B&Q to find either ready made plaster or expanding foam - or both 😄
  • do a ball park figure to refit the bathroom - definitely on the list for this year
Have a good one, SoE
Aria999 · 29/01/2025 14:04

Today's project: organize, clean, and take to kid2kid resale store / charity shop a large number of items that are taking up space required for other purposes.

Then I need to get cracking on our tax return.

petalpower · 29/01/2025 16:16

Today’s extra jobs:

  • drop off two bags of donations at the charity shop ✔️
  • sort out of date food from the freezer in the kitchen ✔️
  • chase up medical stuff for my dad ✔️ (well partially - NHS seems to have zero joined up approach, very frustrating)
  • order friends tickets for a concert I’m in ✔️
WinterFrog · 29/01/2025 16:54

I ate that 🐸 and had seconds. Lots of admin achieved. Getting the difficult things out of the way first really got the ball rolling!
DH is cooking our dinner. I didn't manage to clean anything but I have put some clothes away.
@Mumtobabyhavoc and @SpiritOfEdna 🤗 💕

Well done for all the achievements. Just off to tidy up a bit then I'm planning a lazy evening.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/01/2025 17:02

Just starting my day here. Contractor should arrive in about an hour and I'm running late. 🤦‍♀️
I see everyone is busy and getting a LOT done, though.
Hello, Single and welcome back. 😄
Drills aren't that scary...I get kinda excited if i can use it. 😂

Charity shop run complete.

Actually I am going to tackle the cellar now in the hope of putting away the plastic boxes that have taken up residence in the upstairs hall.

Peridot1 · 30/01/2025 09:38

Morning all.

That is sad that your friend passed away young @SpiritOfEdna. And I can imagine makes it important to hold on to the letters.

Well done to everyone getting stuff done. I’m not sure we give ourselves enough pats on the back for all we do! Huge pat on the back to @FourSeasonsLobelia for starting this thread off back in the day. It’s really made a difference to me. The realisation that just doing one (sometimes small) thing helps with the overall picture. I don’t have to spend all day doing a deep clean of the kitchen. Just cleaning one cupboard door a day leads to a clean kitchen and isn’t overwhelming.

On that note I am still pottering away at sorting our cupboards in the dining area. DH helped me with the glasses cupboard in both the kitchen and dining area yesterday. We are getting there.

Today:

  • dishwasher/kitchen
  • washing
  • vacuum and wash floor in dining area
  • make dahl for tomorrow
  • a bit more organising dining area cupboards
  • quick dentist visit as he wants to check the healing before I go away
  • a couple of gifts to buy to take away

Have a great day all.

SpiritOfEdna · 30/01/2025 15:21

Just by doing a steady, unfancy clear out over time I think that if my house had to be cleared out, it could be done in a day! Having said that we have not been in the loft for a very long time - so once we get access sorted out that will be on the list

Today

  • awaiting arrival of new shredder - cannot wait to attack the filing cabinet 😄(the giddy heights)
  • ironing that I didn't get round to yesterday
  • shift some books to under the bed storage - just keep out what I am reading and what is next
  • refpilates tonight so put a load of washing on. The studio had the Strictly dancers in this week - they looked a lot more graceful than I do on some of the moves 😄
  • made some 'bounty bars' but I think they might collapse when they come out of the freezer in an hour - I improvised the recipe somewhat. Just reread recipe and I've missed out maple syrup ggrrr
  • SpiritDoggo needs a quick walk before I go out tonight
That's all for now, SoE
SingleThreadJoiner · 30/01/2025 15:34

Hello again

Stopping by after a day of back to back online meetings - at least I've tried to take a few minutes here and there to look out the window and rest my eyes!!

@SpiritOfEdna I completely get the giddiness around the shredder! So satisfying, though sometimes tricky to then dispose of without leaving a trail of bits of paper everywhere...
Did you get to see much of the Strictly dancers? How glamorous!!

Well done @WinterFrog on eating the frogs...though written out like that it does make you seem a bit of a cannibal...

I've done my extra jobs for today - paid afterschool club and topped up the gov childcare account. Also printed and signed a form that has to be mailed somewhere, but will do post office tomorrow with the school run.

Not much real cooking going on at the moment as either H or I have been out in the evening and there's less motivation to make an effort. Next week!

SpiritOfEdna · 31/01/2025 12:57

Inner soles have arrived and my walking boots have new laces - I have them on now - they fit now like they used to. What's the betting I find the old ones today? 😄 @SingleThreadJoiner only on the studio's social media and the owner who was teaching me last night was very discreet 😄
Today:

  • last day of dry January ! Do I plan for a glass tomorrow or carry on with dry February.- dilemma, dilemma
  • walk SpiritDoggo today
  • Shredding
  • there is mud everywhere so need to do floors!
  • need to find a recipe for chicken something that is not chicken tenders or chicken arrabiata
  • My extra job for today is clearing one (last) shelf in the wardrobe
Have a good one, SoE
Aria999 · 31/01/2025 20:55

@SpiritOfEdna congrats on dry January!

I'm making this chicken dish for our guests tomorrow

Aria999 · 31/01/2025 20:56

I have been thinking about doing dry February but DH will not want to so I may just start with the parts he isn't here...

WinterFrog · 01/02/2025 08:58

That looks absolutely delicious @Aria999! Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Happy weekend everyone! I'm having a lovely slow start today. DH is up and about, and I am sitting up in bed with coffee, book and cat.

The cannibal comment amused me @SingleThreadJoiner I hadn't thought of it quite like that 😆 🐸

Phone on to check for overnight emergencies, the nyt puzzles and a quick scroll here, and now it's off till lunchtime 😊 Well soon as I've pressed post.

The job.....um.....to do something about the floor of the wardrobe I think. Things tend to get shoved in there and forgotten about.

Have a great day all!

Peridot1 · 01/02/2025 09:31

That looks good @Aria999.

Well done on Dry January @SpiritOfEdna. I thought about it. Briefly. But that was about it!

We had friends over for dinner last night and did Indian food so house currently smells like a curry house and kitchen is a mess as DH forgot to actually switch the dishwasher on last night so I’m still waiting for first load do be finished and there is probably another two to go.

Yesterday I got my haircut and then just prepped for last night. DH did most of the food and I did the tidying and cleaning and will do the clear up.

Today -

  • kitchen clean up - will take a while!
  • washing
  • start packing
  • ironing although might wait and do it when I get to Australia

Have a great Saturday all.

Aria999 · 01/02/2025 12:31

Word of warning on the recipe, I use chicken breast chunks and they only need about 15 minutes to cook not 40, I take them out when cooked and finish the sauce off without them. It does come out nice though!
