Been a busy half term here. DC are in their second week off, I’m the only one who had a single week. DC2 is due back from a sports related residential camp tonight, I suspect will sleep a lot over the next couple of days. DC3 is gearing up for a national competition for their sport (this coming weekend).

In between I’m trying to get on top of the house and have some down time. Also considering applying for a new job…

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/10/2024 18:09

Miss, Re-painting the bathroom which I did half of last year.

bizzey · 31/10/2024 00:05

I have a snoring baby 😴 in the bedroom next door 😍😂😂!!

Garlicbest · 31/10/2024 00:13

Hello! I'm not a member of your gang, but I need to brag and it's not worth starting a whole thread. After an unfortunate couple of days, my loo got irretrievably blocked yesterday. I tried all the usual things and they didn't work. I only have one loo. Frantically searched Amazon for a plunger with next-day delivery, ordered two different ones just in case, and they had the good grace to arrive early today.

The first one I tried worked like a charm, straight away! I had been in a panic over this for 36 hours, was absolutely dreading the job itself, and it turned out to be a total non-event. Yay me!

I'm keeping both plungers because they now feel like lucky talismans. Ugly plastic talismans 😂

Garlicbest · 31/10/2024 00:15

@bizzey, snoring babies are so funny and sweet!

bizzey · 31/10/2024 00:30

@Garlicbest . he is 20 and has just come back from a few days away with his brothers !

I think late nights and alcohol may have caught up ! 😂😂

bizzey · 31/10/2024 00:31

But he is still funny and sweet 😍😂!

Garlicbest · 31/10/2024 00:36

😂 @bizzey!

mathanxiety · 31/10/2024 00:53

IWandered sending good wishes to you and your mum.

I had a lovely facial and massage today, a present from a DD. It was a lunchtime appointment, and my stomach began asking me loudly where lunch was about ten minutes into the massage. I was ravenous by the end and grabbed a donut with orange frosting from a nearby Dunkin Donuts. Feeling very exfoliated and moisturised now.

The deck and stairs painting is proceeding at a quick pace as the painters wanted to get it done before showers that are forecast for tonight.

The showers will be over by midday, and Hallowe'en evening will be dry and hopefully cooler than today's weird 80°F.

Welcome Garlic! Do pop back whenever you feel like it. We are a friendly bunch!

Hooray for plungers! We often (well not me!) have a need for one at work as the Toilet Monster is among us and regularly blocks the loo with his (sure it is a 'he') deposits!

@bizzey
I was convinced you meant a baby next door not one of your sons!

@mathanxiety
I love the idea of a facial and massage. I have only had one in a store ( a present from friends). It was either Decleor or Clarins. Everything was going really well. Soft luxurious cream smoothly massaged into my skin when they then used an exfoliator.
They rubbed my skin instead of washing it off. My skin was not happy although I did leave with a glow and minus my pencilled in eyebrows!!

@HelenaJustina
Hello! Not heard from you for a while. I guess you have been busy! Good luck if you want the job!

@mathanxiety
Probably not of interest to you but I did read somewhere that Dunking Doughnuts (at least I think it is them) will have a vegan choice.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/10/2024 10:48

Math, I love a good donut. 😋 What a nice treat all around for your lunch break. ☺️ Your dd sounds very thoughtful. 🩷
Death, toilet monster made me laugh. 😂

I made stew with left over lamb chops for dinner last night. It was the perfect meal for a dark and very rainy night.
Have been awake for over 90 mins. Woke up coughing, couldn't stop, found left-over codeine from last year when I was super sick and coughing badly, took one, coughing has pretty much stopped, thank God, and I should be able to sleep now. So glad I kept them.
Have got a podcast list loaded and am listening to one now.
Planning on making cupcakes and carving pumpkins with Havoc tomorrow. 🎃

MissConductUS · 31/10/2024 15:33

Welcome, @Garlicbest, and thanks for sharing your calming plumbing news. You were lucky the first plunger worked so well. Our shower drain would clog on a regular basis when DD lived with us, as she has very long hair that she washed often. Usually, a drain-clearing chemical would fix it, but sometimes, we would have to pay to have the drain snaked out. Then I was watching the TV show Shark Tank, and someone was trying to get investment money to expand his company, which made this rubber gadget that you place in your shower drain to catch the hair. We bought one and it works a treat. You must remove and clean it occasionally, but DH does that.😁

Not much new here. The duck couple is still on the reservoir. And I booked the electrician to look at the kitchen tomorrow to see what upgrades need to be done. According to the contractor, everything has to be brought up to the current building code as part of the project. I may ask about getting new ceiling lights installed at the same time. After the electrician, the cabinet guy is coming to measure, so it'll be a busy morning.

Sounds as if you'll end up with a lot of disruption, MissC. Will you try to get it all done before Thanksgiving / Christmas or wait until January?

I went to the dentist today for a general cleaning and ended up with two fillings I didn't know I needed. Luckily I don't have much to do this afternoon. DD has promised to bring me ice cream when she gets home from work. I had an omelette for lunch as I couldn't feel my mouth very well.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/11/2024 00:24

Awaiting the costumed kiddos here! Candy for the kids and cupcakes for parents.

@Mumtobabyhavoc
That's nice Mum. My friends (the bookclub lot) all met together for Halloween in one friends flat. A group of 12 teenage boys came rounds for the treats! They were very polite!

I had on my skull jumper and my friend provided a selection of hats - spider, bat etc etc.

Toilet monster would not have you laughing if you faced the mess on a regular basis!!! Grown men who think mummy is there to clean up after them. And what the hell have they been eating???

MissConductUS · 01/11/2024 13:30

Math, it will be a lot of disruption. The contractor said that the whole thing would take 2-3 weeks once all of the materials are obtained, and that they would move the fridge into the dining room along with the microwave and we could set up a mini kitchen in there. We'll have water at the sink and the gas stove will work throughout the process, so I expect it will be manageable.

We usually go to my brother and sister in law's house for Thanksgiving, and I don't think the work will start until after that. Even if we do stock cabinets, they'll take two weeks to come in, and we haven't even picked them out yet. I asked about semi-custom cabinets and was told they wouldn't come in until January. I'm okay will the stock cabinets. The current cabinets (with one exception) are stock, and they'll be much cheaper than custom.

The electrician was supposed to be here 45 minutes ago to do the estimate for the kitchen upgrades. He's just rung to say he's had an emergency and rescheduled for this afternoon. This is not a good omen.

Havoc, how was Halloween? We never get any trick or treaters. The houses are too far apart on our road to make it worth while for them.

@IWanderedLonely
I’ve been thinking about you and hoping you are coping with your situation with your mum. It must be so hard. 💐

@Mumtobabyhavoc
hope your cough has cleared up. Did you have many trick or treaters turn up? I went once with the children I was nanny to in Toronto, and their friends. I loved it because we didn’t do anything like that over here at the time. Although I was given a list of houses NOT to call at, no unwrapped sweets or fruit (in case they were poisoned), not to go inside any houses. I don’t know if I was shivering with cold, excitement or fear, We just kept bumping into other little groups of children. I did feel as though I was in a movie set!

@HelenaJustina
what sort of job are you thinking of applying for?

@MissConductUS
We had a new kitchen fitted in 2010. My godson fitted it and his dad helped him in the evenings and weekends. His dad was also our dentist, but also a family friend.

The bathroom will be finished tonight. I almost collided with the builder/plumber when I risked walking downstairs. He’s just worked non-stop and it’s looking good so far. He started on Monday, did Tuesday but not on Wednesday as he had to go somewhere. So four full days, which is not bad at all.
I am looking forward so much to being able to just walk into a shower, no climbing involved.
I’ve got a huge pile of shampoos, conditioners , body washes and lotions and potions to go through. My OH and daughter have their own piles of stuff too. I had sorted them into 3 small baskets, but they were all along the window sill, plus the extras that were in a tall cupboard which has now gone, so I must cull! We will have a small cupboard under the washbasin, which will soon get filled I’m sure. It’s very exciting!

IWanderedLonely · 01/11/2024 21:01

Thanks Uman she's plateaued again, though eating even less, but yesterday and today she's been quite chatty. I've had a couple of days annual leave and I was planning all sorts of housework -but I've mainly napped and read books. I think I,'m conditioned to be guilty if I rest🤦‍♀️.
DS & DH are watching the 1980s version of The Thing, so I'm faffing on my phone

Umanresources · 01/11/2024 21:14

I know what you mean. I always have to be sitting doing something, I can’t just sit and watch television, even now. I’m either reading, drawing or scrolling on phone or tablet.
it also drives me mad that dishes are put in the sink and not in the dishwasher!
I’m watching Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out and playing a game on my phone and looking for tasty dishes for Christmas on my tablet. Plumber is still finishing off. He’s determined to get it finished tonight!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/11/2024 21:27

Miss, so nice to pop back here from that other, crazy, thread. 😵‍💫
Just a handful of kiddos with their parents. I make cupcakes most years, sometime ginger cookies, so it's quite nice and fun and the parents remember. ☺️
I let the kids choose what they want and encourage them to take a big handful. 😂
Havoc, baby and I went out later to just a handful of houses that still had lights on. Havoc didn't want to initially then asked to go, so that was nice. I had baby in carrier on my chest and in costume, so it was first trick or treating for both.(obv, no candy for baby!) It was raining, but not badly and we were only out for about 45 mins.

DandyDandylion · 01/11/2024 21:40

We don’t get trick or treaters here as we live on a country road with no verges to walk on. We did have a family party and dd made lots of Halloween themed food. The one that went down best was mummy fingers aka sausages wrapped in pastry bandages. Her brownies with white chocolate cobweb decorations were also lush.
I have had a busy week with both dc off school. Also had a hospital appointment to ultrasound my gall bladder as I have been having symptoms. Trouble is I didn’t read the letter carefully enough and ate a small amount meaning it has to be rescheduled. I do think if you are not allowed to eat or drink anything for 6 hours before the appointment they shouldn’t make it 5pm.

Umanresources · 01/11/2024 22:37

Oh my, the plumber is still here. He’s determined to finish it tonight!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/11/2024 22:41

Oh, wow Uman... that's late for the plumber! Must be a difficult job? Has the toilet been removed?

Umanresources · 01/11/2024 22:49

Oh yes, everything is in place. He’s just putting the finishing touches and clearing up. My OH has just taken him another black coffee and put some random Kit Kats on a plate. For random, read Japanese quirky flavours like Mach’s, that I bought for my grandsons so they could try and guess the flavour. I’d seen Chris McCausland doing this on Instagram with his dance partner from Strictly Come Dancing.

Umanresources · 02/11/2024 00:27

Plumber has just gone. It’s 12.20 am!
