Helena, congratulations to your DC for doing so well on the GCSE. I've seen at least one other thread about the exam results, so all the scores must have gone out simultaneously. When I was still running, I would run in the rain and very cold weather, but not in lightning or snow.

Penguinsa, we do have food trucks here, but I've never seen one that makes pizza. I just can't picture how they get a wood burning oven in one without it being a massive fire hazard. And pizza ovens are usually quite large.

We're back to hot weather, unfortunately.

Our church does an annual clothing drive, and it's on now. They collect gently used clothing over a month, sort and organize it, and then sell it to the community under tents over a weekend. It's good for the community, as they can get a nice pair of men's trousers for $3-5 or a kid's jumper for the same. It also raises a lot of money for the church. DH has a lot of old suits he wanted to donate, but upon taking them out of the closet, we discovered that they all have moth damage and must be binned. Fortunately, he's lost a lot of weight in the last year, so we found many other non-wool bits he can donate. I filled two large bin bags with things fit to donate and will take them to church this morning.

Penguinsa, just up with baby... very impressive pizza van!

DandyDandylion · 25/08/2024 12:05

Pizza and Italian food in general is very popular here. Lots of people buy small pizza ovens to have in the garden alongside the bbq. Not that we get much nice weather to enjoy outdoor cooking.

MissConductUS · 25/08/2024 13:56

That pizza van is very impressive. I see that the oven isn't that large and they are making fairly small pizzas. I wonder how they manage to make them quickly enough to feed a large party or a wedding reception. I imagine that they're in the oven for at least 8-10 minutes.

I've filled another bin bag this morning with clothes for the church clothing festival.

MIL had a nasty fall this week. I'm bringing her and PIL roast dinner, also dinner for Mon and a freshly baked Victoria sponge.

MissConductUS · 25/08/2024 14:02

Welcome, @Grannyinnwaiting, and thanks for sharing your news. I'm sorry to hear about your MIL, but it was lovely of you to cook for her and PIL. Did she break any bones in the fall?

Hi new to these threads. I've blocked Facebook and Instagram on my phone today to try and ensure I spend less time on my phone but instead I've been on mumsnet

I've had a very lazy day with the dog, have barely done anything. Husband and 13 year old son have gone to play golf. My daughters at work. We were meant to be having chicken pot roast for tea but having salmon instead as the timings didn't work out.
My daughter was out with friends yesterday celebrating gcse results. (Proud mum boast, she got the top grades in her whole school!).
I have the gym later and really should be cleaning the house now or walking the dog.
Instead I have a cuppa, book and chocolate rice cakes.
I bought a whole cooked chicken from lidl yesterday but it was yesterday's date, wondering if I can take it back?

HelenaJustina · 25/08/2024 15:45

DC2’s swim club is doing a used clothing collection to fundraise towards their residential camp in October. They are using a company which pays by weight. I’ve got 2 bags so far.

MissConductUS · 25/08/2024 18:20

Welcome, @Willthiswork78, and thanks for sharing your news. Congratulations on your daughter's GCSE results. Is this the test that forms part of their university application? We have two similar tests, the SAT and the ACT. They're run by different companies, and the universities will accept either. Some require at at least one, while others have made it optional. If the chicken from Lidl has been in the fridge since yesterday, surely it's still good.

Helena, some charities here collect bulk clothing and sell it by weight. It is then usually sold in local markets in Africa.

I'm doing some cleaning, and DS went to hang out with one of his HS mates. We're grilling steaks and chicken tonight.

Just back from Elton Hall - went round house and garden then to the garden centre next door and round there and had a white hot chocolate and Victoria sponge cake (Its a plain sponge cake with cream and strawberry jam inside and dusted with icing sugar). There were a couple of children there too and we heard Dad is this a house that people live in but not the King and Queen. Dad replies yes. Then Dad can we buy it then for us to live in?

Yes the pizzas are fairly small MissC, I would imagine even more so compared to American ones but I quite like the size and we had 1 each. DD can eat the huge pizzas by herself but does an impressive amount of sport. Your grill sounds great.

Thanks Havoc Hope you got some sleep.

Welcome Grannyinwaiting Sorry about your MIL's fall. Are you expecting to be a grandmother soon then?

Congrats Will on the GCSE results.

We had smoked salmon and crayfish salad for lunch with granary bread and butter. We are going to have the Sunday roast tomorrow now after eating cake and drinking hot chocolate. Will have something light for dinner. DD is working punting today.

Gosh, I’ve missed a lot of posts! 👋 to everyone on here I 'know' and hello to the newbies. I haven’t done much today, after working all day yesterday. I dusted and went through some books this afternoon - we're having a major book cull and so far we’ve got rid of several hundred. Lots more to go.

I'm ill again 😵‍💫 No idea what the cause is, but the same constant headache/vague nausea/tight chest/cough I had about…..oooh, 3 weeks ago. Completely fed up with it now.

Willthiswork78 · 25/08/2024 19:32

Thank you..its a whole cooked chicken for sandwiches for the week and date was yesterday. They swapped it! Good old lidl!

Willthiswork78 · 25/08/2024 19:32

Hildatablet my husband has been ill on and off for over a month. Hope you feelbetter soon.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/08/2024 19:48

Wiilthis I buy bbq chickens for quick meals, too. That would pee me off. I'm lucky and the ones I buy are cooked and sold immediately. Often a line waiting in evenings. (Costco).
Penquinsa, Is that the "famous" Eton Hall? Sounds like you really get out to explore your region. Awesome!🤗
Miss did you go to the pizza van site? Looks fairly impressive.
Granny sorry about MIL. Hoping not serious! May I have some cake, toi, please? 😋
Hilda, hundreds? Are you a library? Sorry you're not well. 😔

HildaTablet · 25/08/2024 22:38

Thank you @Willthiswork78 - I hope your* *DH starts to feel better too.

Havoc at times it does feel as though we're a library, yes! We own a few thousand books between the two of us - or we did. Slightly fewer now though.

I hope your back is feeling better now?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/08/2024 23:16

Oh, Hilda... a few thousand???😳 Must be a story there? 😊Back still not 100%, so being very careful. Feels like it could go bad again as still very stiff. Have a few more weekly appts booked.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/08/2024 07:19

Took the dc to Steveston today. It's part of Richmond which is where our major airport is (YVR). Historically, it was a fishing village on the Fraser River and where the canneries were once located. It was also a Japanese community, but during WWII they were interred and forcibly relocated inland. It's a shameful part of our history. It's still where a lot of fishing boats are and you can buy fish directly on the docks for them. There are restaurants and lots of little shops. There has been a lot of new construction there in recent years and it is a very nice place to live. I was surprised to see a newish waterfront hotel! We walked around the historic buildings area and up a few little streets.

Welcome back Hilda I sometimes get those type of symptoms with allergies and anti-histamines helps though might be a virus.

Lovely pictures Havoc Are the houses made of wood? Here ours are mainly made of bricks. No its not Eton Havoc as in the school. Its not particularly famous.

Just about to have roast dinner as we didn't have it yesterday. Then DH will do some gardening. Its Bank Holiday Monday here so DH doesn't work today.

DandyDandylion · 26/08/2024 17:20

My dull news of the day is that DH and I have just jet washed the patio. It’s the first time we’ve done it despite living here for 20 years. We now know some of the stones are a subtlety different colour. Next we need to work out what to fill the gaps with as there used to be some kind of mortar but that is long gone. Presumably we can buy something that won’t allow weeds to grow.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/08/2024 17:56

Penguinsa, Yes, wood. I believe they are replicas. It's like a museum, but outdoors. There are opening hours and you can go inside the buildings and they are set up like original. I'll look up Eton. I'd only heard of the school, so thought it might be the area it's in. Building woth bricks must be why your houses last so long there? Here, everything changes a lot more often. The most noticable change is houses disappearing for condos.

DandyDandylion · 26/08/2024 18:06

Our brick houses are comparatively modern, the older housing stock is either stone or wattle and daub. It is rare here to build entirely with wood. It’s interesting to walk through an older town and see which bits were built when. I did exactly this as my final project for a school history exam back in the day.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/08/2024 18:40

Oh, interesting Dandy - I'm going to google waddle and daub, though!🤓😂

eta, looked it up. I knew of that type of building, but did't know the term. Did you do a BA/studies in anthropology?
