@IWanderedLonely

Sorry to hear about your mum. I bet you enjoyed your takeaway.

It's been a bit flat at work today. We learnt one of the receptionists died this morning. Was not a total surprise as she had cancer but knocked us for six. We were like zombies.

@Mumtobabyhavoc

Your lunch was right up my street!

@MissConductUS

When it is all finished you will have to take photos and post them!

@ShoesOnFirstThenCar

Carrots you say! What are you going to make with them??

bizzey · 28/10/2024 19:57

Ohh yes to the photos MissC 😄😄!

Remember how excited we all were when @Penguinsa was updating using her new kitchen 😂!

Workman was meant to come today to sort gate and guttering ....
Hate and guttering are still the same 😐😄!

As the gate is broken , he has access to the back garden, o I ill just get o ith my days as normal this week .

If I am out it doesn't matter.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 28/10/2024 20:30

Ah Death sorry about your colleague, never easy even if it’s expected.

The (oh so exciting) carrots were for two purposes. 1) to have with tea for DH and me, shepherd's pie with carrots and peas and 2) DDs diet is terrible (joys of special needs) but she will eat raw carrots so she has been munching on some too.

Miss kitchen plan sounds very nice and good to have a reliable builder, I like shaker style ones.

bizzey soooo much easier when you dont need to be there for workmen. Have you heard from your boys?

bizzey · 28/10/2024 20:53

Shoes ...not properly herd from them .
But the deal was , if ds kept his tracker on ...I would not pester them 😜😜😂😂!

I said to D's it was just out of nosiness on my behalf 😂.

They have been out and about and I think tomorrow they are going to Auschwitz .

They have been lucky with the weather.

bizzey · 28/10/2024 20:56

Death ,sorry about your colleague.
Always hard to hear this news .

Penguinsa · 28/10/2024 20:58

So sorry about your colleague Death and sorry about people being difficult at work.

That's good your DD will eat raw carrots Shoes.

Kitchen plans sound great MissC

Sorry about your Mum Iwandered

Lovely brownies Havoc

Glad your boys are enjoying their trip Bizzey

Just had pancakes, I had mozzarella parma ham and asparagus and a second one with sugar and lemon. Have my lily of the valley candle and two loads of washing done. Floof is just trilling.

DandyDandylion · 28/10/2024 21:15

MissC we had the most expensive kitchen laminate flooring we could find put in 15 years. Apart from where the washing machine repeatedly leaked it is pristine. Even there it is just a thin black line between the planks, barely noticeable.So much warmer than tiles and easy to damp mop. Shaker style sounds nice too, are you going for a colour or wood on view?

Sorry to hear about your colleague Death always a shock to think you won’t see someone again who was a part of your life.

You are taking me back to the preschool years, Shoes with talk of carrot munching. When I got into the kitchen to cook dinner I would always start by making a dinner plate full of raw veggies. Putting that out for the dc to munch on would stop them asking when dinner would be and got some healthy food into them. Now when cooking carrots with dinner they both want a raw carrot to munch on as I cook the rest.

We visited the local pumpkin patch today aka a field full of haylage bales dressed up as spiders, ghosts etc with straw strew around and pumpkins to ‘pick’. Dd was at least twice the height of all the other dc there but we don’t care and we spent ages admiring the piglets and choosing just the right pumpkin.

IWanderedLonely · 28/10/2024 21:50

Thanks all for your kind words. DM is end-of-life. She is frightened of going into a hospital or care home and I would feel so guilty if that has to happen.
Death sorry about your colleague, it's hard sometimes to get your head around the fact that people have gone.
To cheer us all up, here's a rainbow from Saturday.

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 31: Calmly through the day
Umanresources · 28/10/2024 22:53

So sorry about your colleague Death, it’s never easy even when it’s expected. 💐

i had a pj day on Sunday Havoc. Our shower has given up the ghost, the thermostat isn’t working, so it’s a good job we are getting the new one this week. I ended up standing in the bath with the water running, washing my hair, using a plastic cup and then soaping the rest of me and rinsing with the cup. I got dried and put on clean nightwear with my lovely fluffy jacket, ended up watching a Harry Potter film afterwards.💐

The bathroom has lost the tiles now, plus the bath has gone. It’s looking naked in there at the moment. Thank goodness the loo is still in place!

Hope your boys are having a good time Bizzy. My son and daughter went to Auschwitz on their school history trip. It affected them both deeply. My son was among 100 pairs of students from all over the UK who were chosen to go and then come back to present assemblies to local High Schools about the Holocaust. They made the local TV and newspapers.

My grandsons FaceTimed me while they were having their supper tonight. The youngest one was carrying me round their apartment while he was getting dressed after his shower. He put me on the bunk bed, then I was propped up on the table while they ate. I’ve suggested that we all have the same meal at the same time and FaceTime together. That will be fun.

That rainbow is lovely Lonely, so sorry about your DM 💐🤗

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/10/2024 02:16

Oh, Iwandered. I'm so sorry. That's truly awful for all of you. Bless your mum. 💐

Deathraystare · 29/10/2024 15:31

@IWanderedLonely

That is sad news of your mum. Thanks for the rainbow.

@Umanresources

You had me in stiches travelling around your Grandson's apartment!

@bizzey
Hope your boys are enjoying themselves - well apart from Auschwitz. I remember going there.

@ShoesOnFirstThenCar

You will be glad to hear that I ate carrots today!! I went to the staff canteen hoping it would be tomato flan day but sadly not. I had goulash instead and carrots on the side. At least I got my veggies!

MissConductUS · 29/10/2024 15:39

Iwandered, I'm so sorry about your mum. Is in home hospice care an option? That will depend on her overall care needs, of course.

Uman, we had our master bathroom redone in 2020. It's a bother while it's being done.

Shoes, we replaced the carpet in our main hallway with oak finish laminate flooring about fifteen years ago and it also looks pristine. See the picture below. It's great stuff.

DH ordered 5 laminate flooring samples on Sunday and they came yesterday. Home Depot, a big DIY chain store here, certainly got them to us quickly.

We narrowed it down to two choices. The first picture shows Sir Mingus in one of the boxes the samples came in, and I've included it because it shows the current tile floor in the kitchen and one of the cabinets we'll replace. The second picture shows the transition to the main hallway (wood transition strip), which is laminate. The third picture is the transition from the kitchen to the dining room (brass transition strip), which has a genuine oak floor.

I think that in both cases, the laminate sample on the left is the better match. What does the hive mind of the thread think?

Iwandered I am sorry to hear you are all going through the end of life journey. We had that last year with FIL and it is tough for everyone involved. Are you being supported, we had a McMillan nurse who was a great help? She arranged delivery of equipment and always knew what help was needed. Also we called the hospice directly and they provided a driver to deliver regular pain medication.

We have two very similar wood laminate floors in adjoining rooms MissC. We were advised to go for completely different or it would “look odd” so agonised but went for as close as we could find. I can honestly say now it is down I never notice that there is a tiny difference. They also managed to join the planks so no door plate needed.

Half term is in full swing here, today we had a lovely lunch out and did some clothes shopping. Also spent a daft amount of time looking at all the Christmas tat on offer in M&S. Examples of the tree decorations were an avocado, a green welly, a camera and a high heeled shoe. Not my cup of tea but very entertaining.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/10/2024 20:17

That's a toughie, Miss.
The right contrast could be stunning. 🤔
Just for curiosity 's sake, I'd lay out a sample sheet in a very dark and a very light colour. I think it'd be worth your while to explore a bit.

IWanderedLonely · 29/10/2024 21:47

Thanks all. She's always been stubborn, but the last couple of days has deteriorated markedly. We have a Macmillan nurse from our nearest hospice, who's rang regularly but Mum's always refused a visit. Now though I think we could get her to accept a vist to assess her.
Miss I like all of the samples, so I'm no help at allBlush
I follow Richard E Grant on Instagram and love his "pocketful of happiness" mantra, so will end by sharing that the new Vicar's wife turned up at work today with a box of homemade buns for me and my colleague.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/10/2024 21:52

Iwandered, homemade buns sound delicious! I was just mulling making a pizza... There's something so comforting about yeasty dough rising and baking. ☺️

While the dc napped I painted a wall in the bathroom.

sproutsandparsnips · 29/10/2024 22:54

Sorry about your mum @IWanderedLonely and your colleague @Deathraystare.
You always sound so productive and energetic @Mumtobabyhavoc - I wish I had your energy!
Hope you get shower sorted @Umanresources - it's alarming what we take for granted isn't it? I'm not sure I would be happy without a working shower yet so many have none.
We have laminate in hall and dining room (21 years old and looks good) and in lounge (click flooring laid by DH 17 years ago). I like it. They are entirely different colours but look ok.
Been to see my parents with DSs. They were very good even though DPs are a bit fussy, and we all had a good time - went into Birmingham and saw the bull and out for food, met with cousin and his wife so a good evening.

bizzey · 29/10/2024 23:46

They sent me a photo this morning 😍!
Well .. ds1 did !....

bizzey · 29/10/2024 23:49

Vodka tasters....looks full size to me !
It was in a vodka cafe/bar .
Basically our coffee shops I think 😂.

I think that cost about £5.00!....for the tray ...not each 😂😂

bizzey · 29/10/2024 23:50

First time trying the blurring tool out 😂😂!

bizzey · 29/10/2024 23:52

They were all different flavours !
I looked at the menu ...who knew vodka could come in so many flavours ....

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/10/2024 01:53

Bizzey, it's so nice your 3 ds are so close. Good job, you!!!
It's been a while, but the Van Gough chocolate vodka was quite nice. I'd keep a bottle in the freezer and sip some every once in a while.

Sprouts, just* *starting to get motivated here and there since having baby.

DandyDandylion · 30/10/2024 08:53

I thought students didn’t drink as much nowadays but when we visited a student room recently they had a shelf full of empty vodka bottles. I said “someone likes vodka” and was assured they had recycled most of this terms already.
I too think it is great to have siblings holidaying together, not something I have ever done.

Dd and I have a chilled day planned today, pumpkin carving, brownie baking and a bit of tidying up. DH is busy with work this week and we are all leaving ds alone in the hope he will knuckle down and revise for his second set of gcse mocks. They run for two weeks after the half term break.

Deathraystare · 30/10/2024 09:30

@IWanderedLonely
I hope your mum will accept a visit from the Macmillan nurse. I am sure she would be helpful.

Someone in management put out an email about our colleague that sadly passed. It was nicely phrased and a few other people emailed about her as well.

I will have to find my skull jumper tomorrow as I am going to a friends house for a Halloween do. Not a big party just eating and drinking soft drinks and tea - like our book clubs!!!

@bizzey

Well, they won't go thirsty!

@MissConductUS

Sorry cannot tell you my thoughts on the samples as I was distracted by your cat!!

MissConductUS · 30/10/2024 14:33

It's good to know so many people have laminate flooring and like it. I think the new cabinets are going to be expensive, so at least we won't brake the bank on the flooring.

Havoc, are you painting the whole bathroom, and is it part of a larger redecorating project?

The bloke from the cabinet supplier is coming to the house on Friday morning to measure the kitchen and the existing cabinets. I'll work from home to meet him. And we're going to their showroom on Saturday morning to look at them in person.

It was warmer than usual this morning, and very foggy. And I saw a duck couple on the reservoir for the first time in months. The water level is still very low, to accommodate the nearby construction.

Edited to add that I voted last night on my way home. I was in and out in five minutes. The whole setup was very efficient. They scanned the barcode on my postcard, I signed a screen, and they gave me my ballot, which I filled out and scanned. In a stroke of luck, the polling place was next door to our favorite posh bakery, so I bought cupcakes for dessert last night.
