Bizzey, it's hard when they leave. We were empty nesters when our two were at uni, but that didn't feel permanent. I'm dreading the day DS moves out for his job in Boston.

We finally got in touch with our lady builder/remodeling contractor. She's coming by tomorrow morning to discuss the kitchen renovation work we want done, and a couple of other smaller projects. I'm so glad we used her for our bathroom remodel a few years ago; everything went brilliantly. The work was excellent, and the blokes who work for her are lovely.

Early voting for the presidential election started today in New York. I'll probably go tomorrow after we meet with the builder.

I looked out of the kitchen window this morning and saw these turkey hens in the front yard. They look really well-fed. We had a lot of rain over the summer, so they must have had plenty to eat. It's very dry and windy now, so we're under a brush fire warning.

Ohh MissC .... interesting that you have mentioned about the early voting in your area.

Is it state organisation led ?

Do all states offer early voting ?

Ds is very interested in USA politics and the election Nd said to me last week that some areas would be starting to vote now .

Have the postal votes gone out /started ?

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 27/10/2024 10:02

What lovely autumnal pics everyone! My favourite time of year, got married on a crisp early November day a few (many 😁) years back.

bizzey hope the boys have a lovely holiday and they packed enough pants (and you make the most of the peace!)
Miss those turkeys look very well fed, amazing to have them wandering around so close. Hope the meeting with the builder goes well.

We have started the half term break with a bang as DD is full of cold, she may have caught Covid from DH but not tested her yet. I have woken this morning feeling a bit dodgy too ☹️. Oh well, time for a cup of tea, see if that can’t sort me out!

MissConductUS · 27/10/2024 10:51

bizzey, you can tell your son that 47 out of 50 states offer early voting. It's only come about in the last 10 years or so, mostly to make it easier for people to vote, but also to make the elections easier to administer. We've always had postal voting, as some people (like military members and Americans living abroad) can't vote in person. The postal votes went out weeks ago to ensure everyone had time to receive and return them.

One new thing this year is that they mailed us postcards with a bar code on them. We present the cards at the poll site, and they scan the barcode to identify us in the system. They used to have massive books they had to look you up in.

Under the constitution, states set the rules for voting and administer elections, subject to Federal oversight for fairness and accuracy,

I may have to skip church this morning to run to the warehouse store before the builder arrives. While shopping yesterday, I forgot that I needed to make Mongolian beef in the Instant Pot today.

Shoes, living in Sherwood Forrest as we do, the wildlife is always with us. I hope your DD just has a cold and that a cuppa has set you right.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 27/10/2024 11:00

Interesting about the election rules, seems a barcode is a sensible idea too. DB has an American wife and he gained citizenship a few years back too. They don’t currently live in the US but I assume they have already voted. Haven’t actually asked him! Sherwood Forest makes me think of Robin Hood!
Mongolian Beef sounds tasty, I think you may have posted the recipe a while back, what goes in it? DH and I are always looking for different things to eat.

MissConductUS · 27/10/2024 11:24

shoes, this is my go recipe for Mongolian Beef. She has a slow cooker version of the same recipe.

https://theblondcook.com/instant-pot-mongolian-beef/

I have a large Instant Pot and double the recipe. I freeze the leftovers in quart ziplock bags. Heating it up and making some rice during the week makes for a really quick and easy dinner.

Instant Pot Mongolian Beef

Tender and flavorful Mongolian beef in a sweet and savory sauce has never been quicker or easier than when prepared in your Instant Pot!

Hope you feel better soon Shoes

Lovely to see the turkeys again MissC

Hope your Mum is recovering well Havoc

Hope your boys enjoy their trip Bizzey and all goes well.

Nice autumn photos Sprouts

Friday had another hospital check and all fine and the bruise they are happy is improving and so back now on 5th Nov then surgeon on 11th but hopefully signed off then. Still only allowed walking. Had very good pizza Fri night, shared with DH.

Went to fireworks last night, they are normally around 5 November but this one was early and easy to park out so we went and lots of music, a funfair, fireworks and had a pizza which was rather underwhelming then a nice toffee apple and a hot chocolate with Terry's chocolate orange pieces in and cream and walked around for an hour or so.

Got a veg box from local farm so can have some healthy eating in between cakes and pizza. Having Sunday roast today and will use the savoy cabbage and the romsnesco cauliflower.

Clocks went back today but we forgot to reset the clock on the Floof so 5.30am he was waking me up asking for his tuna. Had 2 cups of tea and have a lily of the valley candle. DS has been searching for things on Amazon including a coffee machine, Starbucks coffee and a slow cooker.

@Mi@MissConductUS @ShoesOnFirstThenCar ·

Lovely pic of the turkey hens! Shoes- yes I thought of our own Sherwood Forest in Nottingham but then I remember Miss C lives across the pond (clue is in her name, Deathray you dopey thing!)..

@Penguinsa
Glad you enjoyed the fireworks! No good trying to reset Floof's timing! Luckily my clock reset itself. I was going to watch it happen but must have gone to sleep. It is a very useful clock. Really for dementia patients as it says everything. The day, the time and whether night or day etc. My phone didn't. It is such a basic phone. All my other phones changed by themselves, though I remember one in the past asked if it wanted me to change it.

Deathraystare · 27/10/2024 12:42

@Ohdearyme72
Enjoy your work trip - if you can!

@Mumtobabyhavoc
Beans on toast is lovely!! Love baked beans. I have even eaten them cold out of the tin before now. I love them best with Worcestershire sauce on them.

@bizzey
There you go, the boys got off alright!

DandyDandylion · 27/10/2024 14:12

Havoc the curry sauce is just to dip to chips in and is very good. It is similar to having curry wurst and chips in Germany. Beans on toast were a student meal for me I have outgrown. Sausage chips/mash with baked beans on the other hand…

Hope you all feel better soon Shoes it’s awful to have half term ruined.

We are sent polling cards in the UK Miss. They used to be sufficient to identify you but at the last election we also had to show photo ID.

I don’t know how parents coped before mobile phones. When my ds has flown without me I have watched him every now and again as I go about my day. Always a sigh of relief when he is back on solid ground.

This weekend I have been in Exeter. We visited the university, went to Killerton NT and had a walk down by the river. A lovely chilled weekend staying with family. The weather has been a bonus, lovely autumn colours but bright sunshine too.

Deathraystare · 27/10/2024 16:41

@MissConductUS

I read instant pot and thought pot noodle! I was a bit confused why you would bother to make something and then stir it into a pot noodle!

Deathraystare · 27/10/2024 16:54

Usually I like my work but today two patients and a visitor accused me of all sorts. Ok I know they are not well but....

Someone waiting for post. Not delivered on weekends and in fact I am also waiting for some Amazon stuff delivered here. The postman has been away so it is in the post room just cannot get it. One patient said she had something from reception yesterday so why can't she get her stuff today. It must have been delivered straight here. Sometimes things are.

A friend of a patient is not allowed on the ward. That is apparently my fault too. Unfortunately someone on the ward said the patient was not allowed out but she has just come to reception and I am accused of lying! Honestly I haven't the energy for this!! Roll on 8pm!

Someone earlier said it was my fault that all her mail is going to her home address whilst she is on the ward.....

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/10/2024 17:18

Penguinsa, looks like a good night!
Shoes, hope everyone feels better soon. We're just over it here.
Miss, following US news here. Saw Obama rap Eminem's Lose It at a rally. I'm like, if he was running that just got him elected. He's so charismatic! 💫

Took DC to a pumpkin patch on Friday after a lengthy getting ready period. 😵‍💫 A couple/multiple crying jags by Havoc for various things (missed the train touring the grounds (it makes rounds), wants to drive the old-fashioned car, doesn't want to get out of said car, wants to drive the old truck, doesn't want to get out of the truck, wants big pumpkin/picks up big pumpkin/drops big pumpkin which rolls into flower bed). 😫 A mum fail when I was putting on baby carrier and baby tumbled out of stroller because, distracted by Havoc's whining, I forgot to clip baby in. 🤦‍♀️

As we were packing up Havoc exclaimed, I love the pumpkin patch, mummy! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Looks like predicted wind storm is moving in. 💨

Remember, remember
The fifth of November
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot

I forgot to ask, celebrating Fawkes or that Fawkes et al failed?

eta: found the answer, failure of Fawkes

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 27/10/2024 19:50

Penguinsa glad you’re recovering well. I’m very jealous of the hot choc, I love Terrys chocolate orange. I’m quite partial to the dark choc version but won’t argue if it’s the milk choc one.
Death sorry it’s been such a challenging day
Lemons what a lovely place to have a walk
Dandy sounds like a lovely weekend
Havoc the pumpkin patch excursion sounds exhausting! Sounds as if it was worth it though for such sweet feedback

I am definitely under attack from some sort of bug, my cuppa earlier did not have the restorative effect I’d hoped for. DD still sniffing but is remarkably cheerful about it. Can hear her in the other room laughing hysterically at something on YouTube.

Lemonsandlemonade · 27/10/2024 20:18

Watching Simone Biles documentary. Part 3 and 4.

Took DS to Halloween disco. He got a prize for his pumpkin.

Feel better shoes
Glad your DD enjoyed the pumpkin patch even if it was trial!

Death that sounds hard going. Work problems are the worst.

IWanderedLonely · 27/10/2024 21:26

I'm probably in a minority, but I've never liked Bonfire Night. It seemed cruel to me, and I don't like fireworks, or dark muddy fields.

DM is deteriorating more. We're trying to keep her in her own home which is what she wants, but it's getting harder by the day.
Had a takeaway for tea, I had duck in plum sauce and it was delicious.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/10/2024 22:27

Iwandered, sorry about your mum. It's so difficult. 💐

I've just been quiet here today. PJ's all day for us. Feeling a bit crap with this cold, still. Have puttered with filling and sanding dings on a bathroom wall I'm going to paint and did same to a kitchen wall.
Made poached eggs on buttered toast with avocado and tomato for lunch.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/10/2024 02:53

Made brownies for dessert. If you like ooey gooey chocolatey desserts these fit the bill. To my recipe I added walnuts, dark choc chips and dried cranberries which I plumped in hot water for 2 mins then drained and squeezed dry. When almost done I topped with white choc and dark choc chips, mini marshmallows and coloured sprinkles just for fun.

Brownies look yummy Havoc.

Took DS to a local museum today. He had an amazing time. There was an exhibition and a photo quiz which he loved.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 28/10/2024 17:34

IWandered sorry it’s so hard with your mum.

Havoc sometimes a pyjama day is absolutely necessary

Lemons glad DS enjoyed the trip to the museum.

DD and I are having a quiet day, have managed to fill her time the rest of the week so just chilling today. We went on a very thrilling trip to the shop to buy carrots tho….not sure if that is quite dull and unexciting enough however, as per the thread title rules 😁

MissConductUS · 28/10/2024 18:04

Iwandered, I'm sorry to hear about your mum. Is she getting care at home? There does come a point where that is not sufficient and there's no good option other than moving to a care facility. My mum and my MIL both had to do that.

havoc, those brownies look fab. What kind of museum did you go to?

Shoes, carrots clearly qualify as dull news. I put carrots in the Mongolian Beef yesterday and it came out very nicely.

Our builder came by yesterday and spent an hour measuring the kitchen and talking to us about options for flooring, countertops, and cabinets. She recommended vendors she works with for everything, so now it's on us to visit their showrooms and pick out what we want. I think we will do simple, Shaker-style cabinets, laminate flooring in an oak finish (to match the real oak floors in the adjacent rooms), and either quartz or granite countertops.

We have a tile floor now that I've never liked much. It's too hard and cold, and it's picked up some chips and cracks over the years. And the grout is impossible to clean. She also told us it would save us quite a bit in labor. She said retiling our floor would be a three-day job, and with laminate, they could install it in the morning once the subfloor was ready.

I didn't vote yesterday as the queues were reportedly long. My closest early voting site is open late tomorrow, so I'll go after work.
