Just catching up.
Glad DD has got to uni safely and sounds like enjoying @Penguinsa.
Yes @Deathraystare enjoy theatre, sounds great - so many things to do by you!
DS is 18 tomorrow, we are going out for food.He has submitted his UCAS application.

Umanresources · 07/10/2024 23:00

We’ve had the final person here about the bathroom, but I’m still waiting for a quote. It will be for a completely new bathroom. It’s another local ish firm and I really liked the boy (well to me he was) who seemed to know exactly what he was talking about and answered some questions before we’d asked them. While he was here someone rang me from one of the other firms, the very expensive one and I had to tell him I was a bit busy. He said he’d send me an email with some good news. It was a reduction of the price of the expensive one to £11,000.
i think I’m even more confused now!
We all got ready today for a visit from my hairdresser, who cuts all our hair. I’d put a reminder on my phone and 10 minutes after he was due I checked and he’s here tomorrow morning. Oops 😂

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/10/2024 00:18

Well, that's interesting timing, Uman! 🤔
Happy birthday to your ds, Sprouts. ☺️

bizzey · 08/10/2024 15:56

I am in my house today doing my housework, washing, mam's washing/ironing and stuff.

I feel like I have spent most of it , just opening and closing windows 😂.

One minute it I beautiful sunshine and fresh breeze..
Blink...
Monsoon downpour coming in the windows.

Close windows..

Beautiful sunshine and lovely breeze
Open window...

Monsoon....

And repeat 😂😂..

I sort of feel like I want to get one last blast of all the windows open at the same time with fresh air blowing the the house .

Penguinsa · 08/10/2024 17:30

Happy 18th to your DS Sprouts 🎂

It's DDs birthday before too long and she will be at Oxford so I ordered a cake from a bakers who will deliver to her college.

Went to hospital for my 2nd check up and they said I am one of the fastest healers they have ever seen. But they put replacement bandages back and made another appointment for next week and it's still do nothing except a bit of walking but bandages took off were totally clean which was good. Ones last week were ones from surgery so they were quite bloody in places.

DH is just off to garage and hopefully will make it before it closes as he wants to order a replacement tyre.

DS took a bath whilst we were out and is in the kitchen a lot. Think he's close to entering the world hot chocolate drinking championships from the amount being consumed. 😂

I had moved my little Molton Brown bottles had leftover from hospital to the bath and expected to find DS had used them all in one go but he had left them and stuck to his usual wild 🌹 so I got to use some.

bizzey · 08/10/2024 17:43

Penguinisa ...i have just got some hot cho6sets that I ordered from Occado.
It is all the chocolate flavours found in a Celebration box !

So all the basics chocs really 😂.

Try out different flavours without having to invest to much !

bizzey · 08/10/2024 17:44

Happy birthday new adult Sprouts ! 🎉..

bizzey · 08/10/2024 17:47

Still don't know how to link !
..I have a feeling my boys are going to say this is their best Christmas present ever !!

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 31: Calmly through the day
Lemonsandlemonade · 08/10/2024 19:24

Your DDs accommodation is cheap and sounds lovely Penguinsa. How is your DS aside from a hot chocolate king? 🤴

Been awol lately sorry my car has died the death so am currently taking bus to work which is horrific as I hate buses and it's full of teenagers.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/10/2024 19:39

Bizzey, just tap the web address. It will highlight. Tap again for a pop up menu. It will have options cut, paste, copy etc. Tap copy. When you are posting just double tap where you want to drop the link in your message.

DandyDandylion · 08/10/2024 20:44

Those hot chocolates look good, might have to get out to the shops tomorrow.
Oxbridge is obviously very highly regarded but what some people overlook is how much money they are able to get from wealthy alumni. That combined with shorter terms means it’s actually a budget option. I guess not open to all but I will definitely encourage my dc to consider it when the time comes.
I have also started Christmas shopping, I don’t buy for many but my dd likes a decent pile of surprise presents. I mostly just need to add some edible treats to her pile and will be done.

IWanderedLonely · 08/10/2024 21:01

Penguinisa does the house seem quiet? When DD went to Uni I was bereft (he is the baby of the family though).
Made quiche for tea tonight and did a tiny one in a buncase for DM as she's hardly eating anything. She ate it all and said she'd enjoyed it.

sproutsandparsnips · 08/10/2024 22:52

Ah @IWanderedLonely that sounds so cute!
@bizzey it's been like that here too today, I have used the tumble dryer for the first time in ages as couldn't keep up with the changeability!
That's the sort of thing I do @Umanresources
@Lemonsandlemonade oh that's annoying.
Back from lovely meal - made a chocolate coffee cake for after.
DS says thank for birthday wishes

Penguinsa · 09/10/2024 01:04

Those looks good Bizzey DS won't have anything other than chocolate in his chocolate normally so out of celebrations he would eat the galaxy solid chocolate but not galaxy caramel, bounty, snickers, milky way, mars, twix though he makes an exception for maltesers. Plus side is when we get celebrations loads are left for us though maltesers are my favourites so that becomes a battle zone. I also got him a peppermint one out for Christmas and DS does love peppermint but I tried it and it's the world's strongest peppermint though DS will probably like that. I won't be having it again. Currently he's bankrupting us with Fortnum and Mason hot chocolate which is now out of stock, a first world crisis possibly caused by DS alone. Though generally DS costs very little so it balances out.

Thanks Lemons sorry about the car. Ours went to the garage today for a new tyre, back tomorrow. DS is mainly just hot chocolate super drinker, and floral bath taker and sleeper in silk bedding, nothing much else happening. Did hear a half grunt, half huff today.

Iwandered The house doesn't feel much quieter without DD and very happy for her, just very sad for DS and cross with the people who caused it then walked off and not having DD here made me think more about DS. Maybe one day he will recover but at the moment there's little sign that will happen and suspect he will be like this for life.

Lovely cake Sprouts

Had my hospital appointment and they were amazed how fast recovering, medical miracle me. 😂

Have candle on, still can't do much, banned by the medical people. They made me another appointment for next Monday to change bandages again. Heard from DD that Oxford is good but there have been no wild parties yet. She has a week of Freshers then work starts next week.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/10/2024 02:10

Sprouts, can I be rude and ask for a (big) piece of that lovely cake? 😋😋😋😋

Penguinsa · 09/10/2024 19:20

DH got a new tyre today, has to put it on and had to remind him he had ordered it. Then he's had a piano club meeting online. Had Chinese meal for dinner and French onion soup for lunch and half a cheesecake from the bakers shared with DH.

Cleaners come on Sat for first time in 2 months and we have to sort house from DD leaving with boxes all around, half a black bin was filled today from her leftovers though she had bagged it up at least. 2 more days to sort that.

MissConductUS · 09/10/2024 19:52

penguinsa, well done for healing up so quickly after surgery. You still need to take it easy. How does it feel having DD away? I assume you're not that far from Oxford, so I will be seeing her occasionally on the weekends. We did weekly FaceTime or Zoom calls with the kids when they were at uni. Regarding the tyre, is your DH putting it on the car himself? Here most garages will do that for free if you buy the tyre from them.

My car was at the dealership on Monday for its 18,000 service, annual state inspection and to have the winter tyres put on. We can get quite a bit of snow here, so I like having winter tyres.

Lemons, sorry to hear about your car. Are you shopping for a replacement?

Sprouts, your cake is beautiful. Is it coffee flavored or mean to go with coffee? We have "coffee cakes" in the US that are traditionally served with coffee but not coffee flavored.

I got an email from the company that pumps out our septic tank and it reminded me that we haven't had that done in almost two years. So I'll discuss that with DH and DS and schedule it online tomorrow. They give you a $75 discount if you book it on their website instead of calling, which I thought was pretty good.

The leaves are just starting to change color here. I'm holding off on taking pictures for the thread until the colors are bit more impressive.

Thanks MissC yes DH is apparently putting the tyre on himself but it's just the village garage so fairly basic service level but good it's so close. Very happy DD is at Oxford and happy there. The terms are very short, maybe 8 or 9 weeks and she said she will come home one in the middle as to keep her punting job open here she needs to be there every 6 weeks or so plus expect wants to see Floof. We are about 2.5 hours each way. I don't think we will go up there other than at start and end of terms to help with luggage as she prefers to socialise and think children settle better like that. I think she has things for the whole term pretty much planned already and will be rowing 6 mornings a week and lots of parties on top of a fairly intense studying schedule in the 8 weeks. She will still be home a lot in the holidays, about half the year. I have ordered a cake to be delivered on her birthday, she seems to have a lot of plans for then anyway, with boyfriend, bbq, friends, rowing. It's DS we feel sad for and having her away makes you focus on him more especially when I have to rest but I need to not get too down about him. That's much easier with DD around as her life is pretty perfect and when DH and I can go out. Weather also going and days closing in. It's the perfect place for her and also reminds me of my time at Cambridge so lots of lovely memories and half wish I was starting there too. Floof is a bit confused and mostly still very happy but comes in and whimpers to me to get DH to play with him more but the sad noise just lasts a minute then you get the happy noises, he's quite dramatic. 😆

Not sure when I can swim again. Originally said 12 weeks, surgeon said possibly 10. Online seems to say 6 weeks. In 2 weeks time see surgeon.

sproutsandparsnips · 09/10/2024 21:36

It sounds like DD is smashing it already in Oxford @Penguinsa!
@Mumtobabyhavoc of course, pop round any time!
@MissConductUS it's a coffee and chocolate flavoured cake. That's interesting about coffee cake in the US. I would always think coffee cake meant coffee flavoured cake. I use Camp coffee essence to flavour mine.
I love autumn. The leaves are just turning and I am anxious to get out on some walks as they make me so happy at this time of year but weather and time are conspiring to prevent me.
Hoping any US friends are not in path of storm Milton.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/10/2024 23:07

God knows I love a good coffee cake, Miss (any cake practically... but, I digress).

Sprouts, there are a lot of different kinds of coffee cakes, many have a crumble top (often cinnamon cake or swirl), some a drizzle (like with a bundt cake), or simple tray bake. You could call a lot of simple cakes a coffee cake, meaning not a more elaborate layer cake which would often be more of a celebration cake.
I'm linking a good recipe. You can serve anytime you want a casual dessert cake, or for guests at lunch. I think if I mentioned I'm making one, or offered to bring one to a friend, I'd get a very nostalgic "Mmm, I love coffee cake! My mum used to make them!" kind of response. Miss, would you say about the same out your way?

If you're really interested I have a more involved recipe in my 1940's cook book. (It's my cooking bible).

Best Coffee Cake (with Extra Crumb) - Sally's Baking Addiction

Enjoy buttery and soft sour cream coffee cake layered with a thick cinnamon swirl ribbon and plenty of brown sugar crumbs on top.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/10/2024 23:25

Penguinsa, I can feel your excitement and nostalgia for your dd. I find it so interesting that your uni terms are shorter and degrees are completed quicker. Like the States, bachelor's programs here are 4 years, two terms a year (Sept-Dec and Jan-Apr), with mid-term exams and then final exams at the end if each term. We don't say Freshman/Sophomore/Jr/Sr, instead, just 1st/2nd/3rd/4th year, though. I'd always be glad if my instructor (vs. Professor/Prof) didn't give exams and assigned research papers as that's my strength.
A friend I once had did her Master's over in England, I don't recall where, and the program was a quick 2 yrs, vs, 3 here. I'm about one semester shy of my undergrad 😢 and would love to go back to finish and then do a master's. I am a weird one that loves school. 🤓

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/10/2024 03:05

We had a flash thunderstorm lasting about 20 mins with torrential rain about an hour ago. There was one huge flash of lightening right overhead. Just watching breaking news that hurricane Milton, in Florida, has made landfall as a cat 3. Good God. 🙏

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 31: Calmly through the day
Deathraystare · 10/10/2024 08:26

@IWanderedLonely
(sidles up to I wandered) I would like it to be known that I love Quiche but not with bacon or ham - I like cheese and onion only.

@Mumtobabyhavoc

Ooh! A rainbow! Shocking news of the hurricane. Must be awful to expect them regularly.

@sproutsandparsnips

Hey sprouts! I have fond memories of mum using camp coffee. I am particularly fond of coffee butter cream even though butter cream is sickly!

@Penguinsa
Exciting times for your DD!! Love hearing about your son and his chocolate obsession and baths!!

bizzey · 10/10/2024 15:14

An absolutely beautiful day day here !
Been out and came back and burst opened all the windows ☀️☀️☀️🍃🍃....just so fresh 😁.

But ..but ...when I looked at the back bedroom window , I saw the foxes had been busy with a bag I forgot I had left out there and not put out for the bin men 🤦.

Going to clear it up now 😔.

Let's just say ..

I gave up needing to go out to the garden 4 months ago ! (🚬😔🤦)

So don't always notice now things happening in my garden !

I feel bad having and enjoying such a beautiful fresh day when others over the pond are waking up to such an awful one ...

But I hope anyone who has friends and family in the hurricane areas are safe and well .x

bizzey · 10/10/2024 16:57

45 minute power walk completed !

Added in a bit more to my
" routine " !
I don't really have one ..

I just set new targets each walk..

Today was 2 circuits of the big green ...and to finally reach the car at the top of the road !
