Wow @MissConductUS that is very foggy, but somehow lovely.
The leaves are just turning here now, so looking forward to lovely walks!
Had my covid and flu jabs today in work. Both in same arm 💪.

Umanresources · 04/10/2024 23:06

Dandy we are due to get another quote on Monday. We had another one today for £4,000, which was for panels on the walls, new flooring, ceiling with recessed lights and completely new bathroom suite, with a walk-in rainfall and side shower, fold-up seat, heated towel rail and LED mirror. It does seem to be very cheap.

I’m supposed to be getting my Covid and flu jabs too, but I’ve not booked them yet.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/10/2024 03:06

Uman, that does sound cheap. It sure makes you wonder why! 🤔

DandyDandylion · 05/10/2024 07:56

I’m interested in those wall panels when we get around to redoing our bathroom. I’ve seen them in holiday lets and they do look very practical as there is no grout to discolour.
The covid jab site is very sore so I am unable to sleep on that side. Not ideal as I wake up every time I roll onto that side. Today we will be looking round a sixth form college. Any tips on what to look for? I guess visit his subject area, ask about transport and just generally get a feel for the place.

Umanresources · 05/10/2024 10:39

Havoc that's what we thought. They are a fairly local firm and I have seen good recommendations from people. I had seen the bathrooms advertised on SM and it was an all inclusive package. I'm still inclined to go with the first, which was the middle price. The more expensive one felt like a corporate presentation, but the others seemed a bit more tailored to my needs.

It's a lovely sunny day today, so the sofa cushions have been put in the washing machine and hopefully will dry outside. I'm having a "bit of a do" for my big birthday in a couple of weeks, and I'm getting quite excited now, as my family is coming for a long weekend from Lisbon. My DSisIL is coming from the other end of the country as well. It's going to be a lovely squash. I've ordered party food and my 9yr old grandson is so happy I've included sushi for us both. He seems to have the same taste in food as me. When he was 2 we used to eat snails together. We both love any kind of seafood, including oysters and clams.

Penguinsa · 05/10/2024 11:49

Thanks Death and glad you had a good shopping trip.

Recovery going well, further check on Tuesday then hopefully last check 2 weeks after that but on very limited activities for 6 to 12 weeks and tired. Saying 12 weeks until can swim. Getting DD ready for move to Oxford on Monday. Timetable out and she has found a further person on her course. Very excited. She is here today, working tomorrow and largely better from her colds. Had paella last night at DDs request. Having lots of Portuguese tarts. Hoping to get outside for a walk either today or tomorrow with a break in the rain.

Plans for your birthday sound wonderful Uman

Hope visit goes well Dandy. I always tend to ask staff if they enjoy working there and would they recommend it which always throws them but sometimes you got very interesting answers especially if management was missing like one told me TAs were cut to a third of previous levels and no they wouldn't recommend it.

Lovely photos MissC

Never have too many Portuguese tarts Bizzey

Lovely cooking Havoc

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/10/2024 16:58

Penguinsa, glad to know you're back on the Portuguese tarts. 😋👏

Penguinsa · 05/10/2024 17:54

Havoc Am currently in Portuguese tart trauma as they were sold out today but DH did get a bakewell tart from the baker which we had half each of.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/10/2024 22:47

Penguinsa, I can totally get behind the bakewell tart! Just googled and watched Darren McGrady make it on YT. 😛👏 Apparently the Queen would pick strawberries for jam. Now I want to make one. ☺️

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/10/2024 02:15

Went out for a drive with Havoc for donuts and I'm blaming you, Penguinsa.
Have got dinner on: hamburgers, roasties and corn on the cob.

Tomorrow is the last day for the season for a local seasonal ice cream shop, so DD and I went and got some this evening. It was 85°F today, so perfect ice cream weather.

The wind is rattling the windows now, and it's going to be cooler tomorrow. I think it's time to take in the hummingbird feeder and put it away for the winter.

MissConductUS · 06/10/2024 17:39

Math, I think our local ice cream shop is closing this weekend too. I'd go there this afternoon but the parking will be awful.

I did the readings in church this morning. Mother Jenny has convinced me to sign up as a lector.

When I came back from church, DS had American football on the television. This was at 10:00 AM. Football is never on live on a Sunday morning. It turns out that an NFL game was being played at Tottenham Stadium in London. Unfortunately, the New York team is losing.

Hi all, sorry not caught up on everything. Life has been challenging, but I'm still hanging on.
W've got the log burner goingDH & DS ate watching a film about the invention of the blackberry in the 90s. I haven't a clue what's going on, so am catching up on Mumsnet and Instagram. I've deleted a lot of the accounts I follow and am keeping only the happy or motivating ones. One of my favourites is called ancient cringe:-

Penguinsa · 06/10/2024 20:02

Lovely sounding food as ever Havoc

Ice cream sounds great Math

Glad you are enjoying church MissC

Love a log burner Iwandered.

Today got the Portuguese tart to go with my tea. Having a Sunday roast for dinner shortly.

Today decided to go to Sandringham as only exercise allowed to do is walking and it's free with our Historic Houses cards except 5 pounds for parking. So off DH and I set though already feeling a bit shattered getting ready and to the car. Anyway 20 mins or so into the journey I warn DH he's about to hit a curb though lots of cars everywhere so don't make too big a deal out of it as don't want an accident. DH goes over curb and drops off it and we continue then after 10 metres or so puncture warning sign appears. DH stops car and plans to change wheel but then realises he has lost the key to the wheel lock. A 247 tyre repair van with a boy who looked about 17 very kindly offered to help but couldn't solve the no key issue. So DH had to call our car rescue service to take us back home. All garages were closed. It was quite a nice ride back high up in the recovery vehicle through the countryside. Then DH and I had sandwiches and tea in our garden and had a walk around that, still some flowers out like hydrangeas and trees with berries on so quite pretty still and got my walk done. And was included in the normal recovery service so nothing to pay.

But issue is tomorrow is when DH is due to take DD and all her luggage to Oxford and we have no working vehicle. Thankfully have an afternoon slot. Tuesday I have a further hospital check though all is fine and suspect that could be put back if needed. There is option of train to Oxford via London but it's long and there is a lot of luggage. Or can try and hire a car. So tomorrow will be trying to ring round garages to see if any solution can be found quickly. Then DD will need to put her stuff in. She has events a formal dinner that evening and very excited. Have cleared my things from the boot with DHs help as I am not allowed to lift anything. Floof was also at the French doors whilst we were in the garden giving DH the death stare whilst he was giving the silkies their flowery special food. There were lots of birds around like Robins and pigeons which Floof thought it highly unreasonable he couldn't eat. Then went in had a bath and Floof is back to his trilly self. DS had a long bath whilst we were out.

Have my lily of the valley candle on and started a new white jasmine handcream, I am healing so well and all nerves reconnected etc but skin is a little dry from 7 days in hospital and around 50C. All looks great though and lovely to have a flat stomach again and everything back to as before or pretty close.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/10/2024 01:54

Iwandered, hope you're okay? I think I saw that the film you're talking about was a series here recently (unless a different one). I remember when everyone had one and it was called the crackberry.
Math, what ice cream flavour did you get? I'm all about basics like good vanilla or real strawberry. 😛
Miss, guess you'll never be able to skip church now! 😉
Penguinsa, I just loved reading your post, but had to re-read. I must be tired because at first I thought you were eating sandwiches while riding back in the rescue truck and it seemed rather comical. Like you were on a tour. But, what a full day you had. Quite a gamut!

Took Havoc on mini train in Burnaby today (a suburb of Vancouver directly east and adjacent). Lots of families had the same idea, but wait was only about 15 mins.
Stayed at the park for a while after, walking all around and going to the playground. Park is very nice.

Dinner was simple: I cut up left-over hamburger patties, added to tomato pasta sauce with a good handful crumbled feta and cooked penne.
Ordered bday cake for my mum's birthday this week.
Baby has first tooth coming in!

A Tooth !!!
.....noo ..blimey
Time is going so quick ...we will be celebrating theirs 18th 's soon 😁😁😂😂!!

I am quite proud of my culinary skills over he last few days ..while devouring the Portuguese tarts from the hospital!!

But ..ds is not a fan of salad ...or salad things...or anything that resembles a salad !

But likes the bits we get with a takeaway curry. 🤔🤔🤔

Sooo...I got my chopper machine out....

He devoured 3 rolls of ham , cheese and my " whatever it is dressed in balsamic" and lettuce chippata rolls .!!

(Rolls were the part baked ones /heat up ones ....so...extra Jummy !)

bizzey · 07/10/2024 02:43

I chopped the onion , cucumber, tomatoes like they have it in the curry house.

mathanxiety · 07/10/2024 05:54

penguinsa - Here's hoping you'll somehow be able to get a vehicle to drop DD off. Too bad about the puncture. You seem to be recovering well. Nice to hear of DS bathing and Floof charming.

havoc I had a classic vanilla soft serve cone. DD is working her way gradually through all of their offerings, but I stick to the tried and true.

Local (American) football team won another home game today, much to everyone's surprise. It's too early to predict a good season and given their dire record last year it would be foolish.

Another warm day today though ten degrees cooler than yesterday. It seems like an unusually warm and dry October so far. It's hard not to wonder if we'll have snow by Hallowe'en all the same.

Penguinsa · 07/10/2024 14:28

Thanks Math. Glad you have good weather still.

Lovely food Bizzey

Sounds like a nice day out Havoc

DD is now on her way down to Oxford with garage coming out to us to sort tyres so as long as no further car issues she will be at Oxford Uni around 3.30pm and then unpack then dinner at 5pm and DH back here around 6pm.

Penguinsa · 07/10/2024 16:32

DD arrived in Oxford room and all set up, ready to go to 5pm formal dinner. Very happy DD. Very relieved parents!

Deathraystare · 07/10/2024 19:24

@Penguinsa

Well you certainly sound on the mend! Jasmine hand cream MMM. Glad your daughter got to Oxford . I often see a coach with Oxford on (called the Oxford Tube) around Shepherds Bush when I am coming home. My Godson used to get off there and get the Central line to Ealing Broadway to his mum's.

Deathraystare · 07/10/2024 19:31

I had quite a good Sunday but unwisely had a cheese omelette in a cafe which was rather greasy and ended up with upset tum. Went to friends place but the heating was on rather high as one of us really feels the cold. It did not leave me feeling great. I should have gone out in the garden. Although I did not finish the main meal she had done it was very nice - tuna burgers and then a frangipani tart. We have to have stuff without lactose as one of us is allergic so we had Swedish glace ice cream but for those that could there was also full fat kefir. I have only had it as a drink but this was like a yogurt. Delicious and by Tim's dairy that make the lovely cherry yogurt I have in Caffe Nero. I managed to eat all the sweet!! I have some in the fridge at home so will eat it tonight.

Going to the theatre tomorrow, free! I will also have a flu jab at work (though not working there tomorrow.

MissConductUS · 07/10/2024 19:35

Well done, Penguinsa. It's always a bit of a fire drill when they first move to university lodgings. Is she in university housing or did she have to find something off campus?

We had a nice FaceTime call with DD and SiL last night. He likes his courses and says it's easier than his undergraduate program. DD has interviewed for a fully remote job with a Federal government agency doing data analytics. It would be perfect for her if it comes through. I might wind up with both children in civil service jobs.

@bizzey
What a sneaky mum you are with the food!

Oh I have to confess - those skechers weren't half price they were more like £45 than £35 but still a bargain! Just did not want to lead you all astray!

Penguinsa · 07/10/2024 20:08

Thanks Death Enjoy the theatre

Thanks MissC Hope your DD gets the job. DD gets accomodation in Oxford Uni in her college which is very central all 3 years and its good value as well, just under £5000 for the year and she has a huge room in a very old building with an en suite bathroom, there's a single bed, desk, bedside table, wardrobe etc and she has taken the rest like a mini fridge. She has dinner in college tonight think it's with gowns. DH is back home now, Floof is very happy to have him back. DS has been in the kitchen so much making things whilst they were out, sounded like about 50 hot chocolates as well as hot dogs, his cheese and ham toasties.
