Nothing calming to report! After a crazy birthday filled weekend, I have something after work every day this week. Opticians for child, school welcome meetings (attending as a parent) for various year groups, club committee meetings. I’d say I’ll be glad to get to the weekend for a break, but it’s one of DC’s biggest swim galas of the year and I’ve got various volunteering roles across the weekend! Maybe things will slow down in October.
5 degrees C here this morning, autumn crisp.

DandyDandylion · 12/09/2024 07:06

I have visions of you all leaping around waving your executioner, to rid your homes of unwanted visitors. I have people in my house who will happily scoop up and remove spiders, which do seem to be trying to move in out of the cold at the moment. Flies I hate but there don’t seem to be as many in my house now there are fewer dogs living next door.
I am trying to get back into the swing of all the after school activities, there have been two lovely award givings already though. Dd received her ballet certificate which will be proudly placed into a frame when I get round to it.

Penguinsa · 12/09/2024 14:51

Hope you had a great birthday Helena Happy belated birthday wishes.

Well done on DDs ballet certificate Dandy

Thanks Death and Havoc

Floof is the main insect catcher here and loves the role but eyesight isn't the best and often catches invisible insects. Buzzy flies are his favourite, don't get many of those but they are the ultimate cat toy.

Op still on for 17th so preparing things for that and filled in accommodation and HR forms for job. Checks have also been slow, think they are done now.

DH has gone to work. Last night we had homemade cottage pie which was nice. Our boiler is still not fixed and its just suddenly gone a lot colder so hope that gets done soon. I will go on a reclining chair after operation (apparently that's an American thing to do but quite liked it after first two operations) and have got lots of pillows, a fleece sheet and will get a fleece duvet cover tomorrow. Have a small table set up with ipad already.

Have a parcel that's arrived to collect with biscuits x 2, candle, handwarmers for DD, 4 types of hot chocolate for DS.

Penguinsa · 12/09/2024 18:25

Floof excited by a lit scented candle, DH stopped him putting his nose and paws in it which Floof thought was unreasonable.

Poor flood being denied a candle!

Gosh Helena you never stop,

DS has stomach bug. He is asleep in my bed but has been an hour or so in pain with trapped wind. I hope now he has sat on loo he might settle for some sleep. 😬🤞

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/09/2024 23:46

Lemons, sorry ds is ill. 😔
Hello, Floof! Aren't you clever up there! Penguinsa, how has ds been?
Awww Dandy, congrats to dd re ballet cert. Definitely something to celebrate.
Helena, is it a party or comp?
Shoes, just laughing imaging that. 😂👍

Spent the afternoon at Granville Isle. It is a lovely fall day even though technically still summer. Fringe Festival is on.

If you have to ask then we need a chat...🧐

bizzey · 13/09/2024 03:05

I am still awake ...thinking about the little lonesome in the fridge 😁😁🤣...

Well ...this flipping insomnia or whatever you want to call it is annoying me !

Been lying awake for ages... pretending I am sunbathing on a beautiful beach and everything....

And here I am 😁

Chocolate eclair and TV I suppose!

DandyDandylion · 13/09/2024 08:07

We used to have a cat who enjoyed being up high in the house Penguinsa,

Fingers crossed your ds is feeling better this morning Lemons.

The doughnuts and eclairs look lush, stop making me want a visit to the local bakery 🤣

I have my first vaguely empty day since the dc went back to school. Of course I have the usual round of housework, laundry etc but might get out for a walk if the weather is nicer today.

MissConductUS · 13/09/2024 15:15

Shoes, the Executioner has no rivals in the bug wars.

Dandy, while you can zap flying insects in flight, it's tricky. The best method is to wait until they land on a wall or a flat surface and slowly lower the energized Executioner towards them. As soon as they see it, they instinctively fly straight up into it and zap themselves. You can then pick them up with a tissue and bin them. As you can tell, I've done this hundreds of times.

Penguinsa, our cats ignore flying insects. Perhaps they're just discouraged by years of not being able to kill them. When ours were younger, they used to purchase on high places like the tops of bookshelves, but that seems to have faded with age, and now they nest closer to the floor. That's a lovely painted cabinet the Floofster is perched on. By the way, I'm not aware that reclining chairs after surgery are an American thing. Perhaps it's regional.

I think I'm gaining weight just looking at the pictures of the donuts and pastries.

@bizzey

Luckily I am immune to the look and smell of doughnuts!

Well the funeral took place of a well loved porter yesterday. Another porter drove me there. It was a lovely service. Couldn;t have been bettered really. We walked into 'Jerusalem, then a slide show of his life with Slade's Everyday - I love that song! then at the end Eton Rifles he was a Jam fan) One of our few disagreements though we both loved the Clash! He had had such a full life going to the states on many occasions and also Cuba and other places for the Boxing. We were lined up waiting to take our seats when I heard the ungodly sound of motor cycles revving up. I expressed my feelings that this was most inappropriate at a funeral only to be told by the other porter that it was his mates showing their respect! They then rode before the coffin! Duh!

Penguinsa · 13/09/2024 16:06

That sounds like an interesting funeral Death glad it went as well as it could.

Thanks MissC and Dandy Floof doesn't go up high as much as he used to. DD says cats do it to show who is the most important in the house so a kitten goes up high to try and set their status.

Hope your DS gets better soon Lemons

Lovely doughnuts Havoc

We have a boiler engineer round again to try and fix the boiler again and he has radiators working but struggling with thermostat. Not quite sure what that means if he can't fix that. Hope we can get heating as past few days its suddenly gone cold after being warm. I have a short-term back up of lots of fleece things from Dunelm. I am also trying to avoid colds before operation.

Just had a salted caramel hot chocolate. Had some broccoli and potato bake for lunch which DH made last night. The fencing guy is supposed to come round too to quote but not here yet but that's just as well as boiler guy has been here since 1.30pm. Floof is fascinated and the man has been asking about him. DH told him when he asked what type of cat he was that he's a Maine Coon but only a small one. 😂I think DH has forgotten the size of a normal cat. Floof is about 1.2 metres from nose to end of tail and 8kgs ish. I heard DH say to him I love you so, so much Floof, my little kitten.

HildaTablet · 13/09/2024 16:48

Deathraystare I was visiting a village once and passing the church when a funeral procession turned up - the coffin was in a motorcycle hearse, like an extra-big sidecar.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/09/2024 18:02

Awww Penguinsa, your dh sounds like such a softie.☺️🩷 That's so nice. Agree, don't catch a cold!
Miss, just laughing at your description of the executioner... basically, you're absolved because the flies meet with an unfortunate accident. 🧐

mathanxiety · 13/09/2024 20:36

Good looking donuts there, havoc. You've inspired me to go to the Farmers' Market tomorrow morning. There's a little bakery stall there where they sell delicious pastries and donuts.

Helena belated birthday wishes to those celebrating. Hope you'll get a moment to draw breath after the busyness subsides.

Death it sounds as if the porter had a great many friends and will be truly missed.

lemons wishing DS a speedy recovery, and I hope you don't catch the bug.

The exterminator came and pulled out the stove to see where the mice could be getting in (because I have bunged up all the little holes I could find with steel wool) - there was a nice big hole in the wall where the gas line came in. I was able to sweep out several lost knives, forks, and spoons, plus a dozen ping pong balls of Dcat's and nearly all her pom poms, as well as a handy little filet knife, all of which had found their way under the stove over the years. I disposed of the cat toys, but the cutlery I soaked in bleach, and it will go through the hottest cycle of the dishwasher, hopefully to fight another day.

I bought some mint essential oil and dabbed some on cotton balls to deter any more mice. The empty apartment downstairs will have new tenants next month, and apparently they also have a cat, so I feel the mouse issue will be history soon even though my own Dcat hasnt exactly covered herself in glory during this episode.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 13/09/2024 21:16

Havoc my DH takes a more swinging, murderous approach.

Death that sounds like a lovely way to say goodbye to him. Very “him” from the sound of it.

Lemons hope DS is feeling better today.

Penguinsa hope the boiler is fixed, it’s definitely gotten chillier but forecast says it’s warming up again next week 🤞🏻.

DD has been out with one of her direct payments girls and had a McDonalds so she has come home in a happy mood. Her sleep has been off this week so I went back to bed when she went off to school, had a lovely catch up on lost sleep

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 13/09/2024 21:18

math my post missed your mouse news, let’s hope that it the end of them 🤞🏻

Penguinsa · 14/09/2024 18:54

Glad your DD is happy Shoes

Well the boiler worked until 1 minute after the man left then the trip went, he had it running for c10 mins fine with both heating and hot water but back to neither. Hot water isn't really an issue as we can take it from electric shower. And at least it has warmed up again for next week but we do need this solved.

DH and I cleaned downstairs together and then gardened together and very pleased with house and garden. Planted some tulip bulbs.

Have a lily of the valley scented candle lit now. DD has been working on the river tours today and currently her and DH are at Dunelm. I have lots of fleece ordered and she has things for university ordered.

DandyDandylion · 15/09/2024 07:55

Our boiler broke in May Penguinsa which in hindsight was a blessing. We switched it back on after it’s summer rest the other day and fingers crossed it is working well.
Talking about cats being up high, mine like to roost on our shed. From there they can keep an eye on the neighbours and their dog.
I had a lovely walk the other day, up to a local ancient hillfort. Interesting to see what is left of the structure. It was really quite windy as it is up on the hill, but as soon as you drop into the ditch they dug you were completely sheltered.

MissConductUS · 15/09/2024 17:40

Penguinsa, depending on how old it is, you might be better off replacing the boiler, especially if you can go a step up in efficiency.

DS is making a fancy roast chicken dinner for us tonight.
