Do you sunbathe topless?

Inspired by the other thread - sunbathing topless is apparently very popular among Mumsnetters, just curious how many of us do it!

I think it’s good to desensitise people to breasts, maybe it would help normalise breastfeeding.

Personally, I love feeling the sun on my skin.

PeopleAreDicks · 30/07/2024 16:02

I can’t sunbathe now as I have a condition that makes me extra photosensitive but I used to have no qualms about being topless on a beach or plucking my bikini line while I was at it. I’m female if that’s relevant.

My attitude to tanning has changed dramatically over time, nothing to do with morality but it’s one of those things that gets stranger and harder to comprehend the more you think about it. I have a medium skin tone but at both extremes you have people damaging their skin to lighten it or darken it. We are such a strange species.

BeyondEverythingsComingUpMilhouse · 30/07/2024 16:03

Yep, home and abroad.
As does my mother, in her sixties!

Lovetheants · 30/07/2024 16:16

Used to love sunbathing topless in my twenties when I had the figure to do so.
I'm now in my late forties and overweight with large boobs that fall under my armpits since breastfeeding my kids which means I wouldn't do it now.

Maddy70 · 30/07/2024 16:20

Yes usually. I don't want strap marks

When was the last time you went abroad on holiday? Of course people still sunbathe.

A long while ago, obviously!

obsessedwithfreshbread · 30/07/2024 16:46

I used to back in my late teens/twenties, I remember plenty of booze cruises where almost all the girls were topless. (90's/00's)

Now I just lower my bikini straps if I'm laying on my back and will undo the back if I'm on my front to stop strap marks but wouldn't subject anyone to the sight of them flying free anymore 😂

KnittedCardi · 30/07/2024 16:52

Yes, did and still do.... Age 58. Sorry! Recently in Italy and it was mostly us oldies. I think youngsters are less likely to go topless these days, but then again, a few small triangles and a bit of string don't make you much more covered tbh.

Loads of people still sunbathe. We all just put suncream on. I am blue eyed and fair, but have never burnt, I do have a tan because I go in the sun.

mitogoshi · 30/07/2024 16:56

I don't sunbathe but I do like swimming in the sea naked, obviously where allowed!

ginasevern · 30/07/2024 16:57

I've never sunbathed topless in public. Never felt comfortable about giving men a free eyefull.

mitogoshi · 30/07/2024 16:58

Have you seen modern bikinis though, i actually think they are far more provocative than being naked (and flabbyGrin)

greengreyblue · 30/07/2024 16:59

Have done in the past, just feels more free. Don’t sunbathe anymore though. Went to a beach today as DD20 wanted to and I was under a parasol, hat and thin shirt! DD wouldn’t go topless.

DullFanFiction · 30/07/2024 17:02

@KnittedCardi i agree.
Even abroad (France, Italy etc….) young people seem to be much more reluctant to be topless than we were

VerySadCase · 30/07/2024 17:02

I have no interest whatsoever in sunbathing full stop, nor in being topless. But I'm sick to death of other people fussing about what women do or don't do with their bodies.

As far as I'm concerned, if it's legal in the country that you're in, it's fine. If it isn't legal, don't do it. And wherever you are, stop fucking policing what other women wear.

Ratisshortforratthew · 30/07/2024 17:02

Yes, and I find British prudishness very silly. I like spending time in Germany and Scandinavia where attitudes to nudity are relaxed and it's not sexualised. (I was raised in the UK but have European ancestry)

StripedPiggy · 30/07/2024 17:09

Sunbathing isn’t really my thing. I did do a bit of it on holiday with groups of friends when I was younger, though, and the girls did usually take our tops off. Nobody seemed to mind or even particularly notice.

They’re only boobs so I struggle to understand what the fuss is about. 🤷🏻‍♀️

sugarbyebye · 30/07/2024 17:12

I wouldn't be bothered about sunbathing topless but sunbathing just seems so nineties. I've got other things to do with my life.

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 30/07/2024 17:15

Used to. Wouldn't now because I'd trap a nipple when I reach over for my drink.

Kolom · 30/07/2024 17:20

I wouldn’t, I be worried about a weirdo taking a picture or getting burnt there.

WetBandits · 30/07/2024 17:20

I do (depending on the laws of the country I’m in at the time), also love a bit of topless swimming - the weightlessness is very freeing Grin

Only in private or in countries where it's socially acceptable.

OnlyFrench · 30/07/2024 17:26

Yes, always have done since I was about 20, also nude on appropriate beaches.

I was brought up in an extremely prudish household m never saw my mum topless, and was determined my DDs wouldn't have my hang ups. They never had an issue with either parent being naked, although obviously their dad covered up as they got older.

That thread really shocked me/made me sad.

Underlig · 30/07/2024 17:32

No, I wouldn’t, but have done in the past. Now I avoid sunbathing at all costs.

RenoDakota · 30/07/2024 17:35

No, because it's not the 1980s any more.
