Or just the school holidays?

I wish it was 74 as several years later I’d have lots of brilliant concerts to go to, see the onset of punk / new wave. Currently on a Spotify 1979 playlist and loving it.

Bamboozles · 25/07/2024 18:41

Oh how I wish it was!

larkstar · 25/07/2024 18:43

I still have some candles in the kitchen drawer - just in case there's a power cut.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 25/07/2024 18:43

Last year at school doing O levels

i remember making mud pies in 1971
do children still make mud pies?

They make MORE mud pies than ever.

Most of my friends' kids have personalised mud kitchens in the garden - ie has a sign on saying "The Williamson's Mud Kitchen".

And they have things like this at "Forest School" which pretty much every young child I know seems to attend.

Mud seems to be a huge part of the EYFS curriculum. It's all about the mud,

It’s Tuesday lunchtime, and I’m avin oops!

Mymanyellow · 25/07/2024 18:46

I was 10 coming up 11. Just about to go to big school. My sister had a pair of green platform shoes with yellow stars on them. God I loved those shoes.

VWT5 · 25/07/2024 18:48

I was definitely Kung Foo Fighting in 1974.
I met hundreds and hundreds of handsome, smart, young men. (My parents had “suggested” I join the RAF….)

BringMeTea · 25/07/2024 18:49

Parents bought Chart Hits '74. A classic. We had joy, we had fun...

I’m enjoying the reminiscences!

This thread was inspired by a few posts I saw today such as ‘do women belong on the front lines’ and ‘how can I find out how many foreigners are living near me’. Felt a bit time warpy.

Bloody hell. There was someone on a mumsnet thread wanting to find out how many foreigners are living near them?!?! Have you got a link?

We have overhead power cables so it's more a given than a just in case.

White dogshit?

Yes I remember white dog shit! What was that about?

UtterlyOtterly · 25/07/2024 18:55

BringMeTea That song is totally heartbreaking. Songs then were so much more interesting. Wasn't Old Shep from about the same time?

Hot summers, endless days playing out, not a care in the world.

Vicliz24 · 25/07/2024 18:56

I loved 1974 ! I was 9 going on 10 happy if poverty ridden days

I did homework by paraffin lamp (in the Winter of Discontent, not the summer. obvs), and if I ever get a whiff of that smell I'm transported straight back

@Hummingbird75 Don’t worry, you’ll get your heatwave! You’ll think 1975 is hot…until the summer of ‘76 arrives.

All I remember of that Sumner waa being not quite 3 and sitting in the backyard in my old baby bath in some water .

I remember having baths by the light of a battery camping light. How the hell would kids today cope without all their electricity powered gadgets? Simpler times.

Yes I remember white dog shit! What was that about?

dog food was full of non-food filler ingredients that wouldnt be allowed now, and when dog poo dried up* and the organic brown matter shrivelled, the white filler stuff remained.

*because very few people trained their dogs to poo in the gutter and no-one would ever conceive of picking it up. Dig shit was everywhere. If you spent a day out playing as a kid, you’d have to have your shoes inspected before setting foot in the door. Is why so many of my generation are “no outdoor shoes in the house at all”.

DramaAlpaca · 25/07/2024 19:10

I turned 10 that year. We moved from a house in the middle of nowhere to the outskirts of town on the edge of fields. It was fun having other kids around to play with. We'd be out all day and only come home when we were hungry. Happy times.

UtterlyOtterly · 25/07/2024 19:10

Tiger Feet and Devil Gate Drive were in the charts. Also the Wombles. Oh, how I yearned for a Womble toy but never got one as I was "too old" for toys sadly.
