If it's the summer of 1974 then I'm about to break my arm jumping off my bike! I will also one week later slit my head open after tripping up whilst running to the ice cream van. Not my best ever summer 😂

Hope the ice cream was good!

Average house price £10,000!
Golden Wonder crisps 7p
Ford Cortina £1,519.00
Gallon of petrol 50p
Pint of milk 4 1/2p

In Winter we got chilblains and in the summer we got freckles!

I bought my first single record with my own pocket money - Billy don't be a hero by Paper lace.

Good times.

I was looking at my old payslips not long ago. The first one I ever received for a full month was the princely sum of £60. And that was a very good starting salary for a 16 year old 😆

Back of my dad's Zephyr
I loved my dad's Zephyr. Loved the front bench seat. I have a pic of me with it when I was nine in 1974.Going on holiday to Hayling Island when there was loads of arcades.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 25/07/2024 19:14

Some hits from the summer of '74 just to get you feeling all gooey inside for those of us old enough to remember.

It was the only summer I ever had a birthday party, and I had the dubious pleasure of visiting my father in two pretty rough prisons.

My parents’ marriage had exploded the year before and her new bloke had moved in.

Hey ho, we lived in a small house with a massive garden which gave me a semi-rural upbringing, briefly. I actually remember it all quite fondly.

Vicliz24 · 25/07/2024 19:15

All my grandparents and my parents were alive in 1974 . I would dearly love to go back and see them all .

FatArse123 · 25/07/2024 18:55

Yes I remember white dog shit! What was that about?

I asked this very question a few months ago! Someone helpfully told me it was calcium from dogs eating too many bones. Can also be a sign of liver problems but back then dogs are more bones.

Fgfgfg · 25/07/2024 19:16

Ate

TwigletsAndRadishes · 25/07/2024 19:18

I've got a massive stupid smile on my face after watching that Osmonds video. 😁

Well I am shocked David Cassidy and I did not marry, as I knew we would.
I had him plastered all over my bedroom walls - courtesy of the Jackie magazine.

roibustea · 25/07/2024 19:23

I wasn't even a glint. I did have a bit of a headache earlier, I assumed it was because I didn't sleep well but maybe I was sliding out of existence 🤔

Willmafrockfit · 25/07/2024 18:37

i remember making mud pies in 1971
do children still make mud pies?

Mine are making them now, although in a modern day twist they're infused with mint and lavender from the garden! They keep splatting them against the shed.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 25/07/2024 19:24

This was in the days when a rare 'visit' from my dad meant going to sit in my nan's (his mum's) flat for the afternoon then spending the evening sitting outside the pub in his car with a bag of crisps and half a shandy while he got pissed inside, before dropping us off back home. I was 8.

KingscoteStaff · 25/07/2024 19:24

I'm starting in the Littlies class in September and my school smock has my name embroidered on it in chain stitch. It's folded in my pants drawer and I take it out and stroke it each day.

PandoraRocks · 25/07/2024 19:25

I was 12. Went to Blackpool on a coach trip with my parents to see the illuminations. It was the first time I'd stayed in a B + B. Sugar Baby Love on repeat in the coach. Rock Your Baby, what a classic that song was. It instantly makes me think of fairgrounds as it was always played on the Waltzers. God this thread is making me nostalgic - my gran and parents still alive then and a whole world of possibilities ahead.

Rowgtfc72 · 25/07/2024 19:28

If it's 1974 my little brothers due to be born tomorrow!

AnybodyAnywhere · 25/07/2024 19:30

I wish!

I was 19, living in London and having the time of my life 😃😊

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/07/2024 19:33

I’m not even born or bred, yet

RomanticOutlaws · 25/07/2024 19:33

AzureAnt · 25/07/2024 17:54

I wish. I was 13. Lived in a popular UK holiday resort. Had a job,, money in my pocket. If I could go back I would correct all the stupid mistakes I made

Someone once told me that the future is our time machine, so whilst we can't go back we can change our lives going forward. Dunno if that helps?

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 25/07/2024 19:38

My parents met that year. He'd fancied her for months in the pub (he was working evenings) but being the quiet wee man he was he put off asking her out. In fact he didn't ever ask her out to be fair he was in the queue in the chippy ahead of her after the pub closed so he ordered two fish suppers instead of one and handed one to her 😂. They were together 20 years before he died.

MummyLongLegsss · 25/07/2024 18:37

I was at university then.

So you can ask me anything about the mad early 1970s.

ditto.

ah Carnaby Street when it was still hippy central
Hari Krishnas on Oxford Street, crossing paths with the "no legumes" billboard man and his tracts
BIBA ❤️
First Love
House share with people who are still close friends
Parties
DISCOs - oh God, tiny, tiny little dance floors in darkened rooms with glitter balls, with names like "le purple pussycat" 🤣
Laura Ashley dresses
pulling all nighters to write essays at the last minute...
stuck at Uni late into the evening because of bomb scares at the tube and no way to get home
watching neighbours religiously, every day, in the student common room

such great memories - apart from trying to go to the loo, while drunk, and wearing a white jumpsuit 😱

Oh god the garbage people come out with. That’s just meaningless.

meanwhile in 1974… it is a rainy summer just like the one we will have in 2024

biscuitandcake · 25/07/2024 19:46

iwasashowgirl · 25/07/2024 17:29

I don’t look a lot like Jesus, if that helps

Yes, but do you talk like a gentleman? (Like we all remember back when we were young, presumably in 1974).
