Should I believe colleague that flight from Jamaica is delayed?

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:40

One of my colleagues was due back from Jamaica on Thursday (11th) and has sent a message to say she will be back early next week as the flights have been messed around because of Hurricane Beryl. I can't find anything online about this, and don't know if she's just decided to stay out longer and leave the rest of us to pick up the pieces or if it's genuine. Does anyone have any information?

Thanks for the sensible answers, I'm ignoring the idiots.

Just curious are the idiots those telling you about yourself? I think you really need to think about how you come across in this instead of calling others idiots.

Tickytocky · 09/07/2024 08:14

9 pages and 200 replies later - still no confirmation from OP if she’s even her Manager 🙄

Psychologymam · 09/07/2024 08:23

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:50

No I didn't miss that - did you miss that I was asking about flights from Jamaica?

She’s probably a little surprised that you don’t seem to care much - comes across as somewhat callous.

Believe me, you don't have to be intelligent to be a manager.

This type are out there causing chaos and ruining the mental health of their employees daily.

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 09/07/2024 08:37

Checking the live departures, wow

Bigbirthdaygal · 09/07/2024 08:46

Unless your her boss I'm not sure why it would be down to you to look into this.

This reminds me of when the north west had unusually heavy snow in 2009. It was upto my knees where I lived and I spent three hours waiting at bus stops and trudging to different roads to try different bus numbers.

I'd say about 80% of people didn't make it into work that day. Most buses in my area were ground to a halt, even the super regular ten minutely ones on the main roads. Trains cancelled. It was absolute chaos.

Cars were crashing left right and centre or getting stuck and abandoned.

The following day it had settled enough to be able to get into work, but there were delays and lots of traffic, but most people made it into work.

The office manager spent the entire day looking up each employees address, researching their local busand train routes and interviewing them on whether they made enough effort to get into work or just used it as an excuse for a day off.

Absolute cunt.

Oh I remember that, (was south west scotland at the time, they closed m74 and we were living rural so about 1.5 miles from even an A road and closest shop, literally felt like Polar expedition going to get food wrapped up and pulling the sledge! @littleredcaravan your boss definitely a cunt who was clearly not hit by it (or had any outside world connection to see it! Pretty much like op! Where were you working in 2009 @LivingOnAnIsland ?! 🤔)

Longma · 09/07/2024 08:54

Imagine stopping to this level to snoop on a colleague…

Well it's not something I'd do for a colleague, but if someone was really determined there are ways to find out.

Mulhollandmagoo · 09/07/2024 08:58

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:51

I think you're right, but I can't see anything - I've been on the live departures board from Kingston for example, and everything seems to be running on time.

Why are you looking at the live departure boards??

Shambles123 · 09/07/2024 08:58

OP may have had to delay her holiday for this colleague's extra days. V annoying even if true!

Branleuse · 09/07/2024 09:02

MonsteraMama · 08/07/2024 21:59

I think you need to wind your fucking neck in and stop acting like a lunatic watching the live departures. You're not her mum or her minder, it's literally none of your business.

Quite!

Thanks for the sensible answers, I'm ignoring the idiots.

Just one idiot on here.

The one that doesn't appreciate that an airport closure for a full weekend leads to a knock on effect for subsequent flights.

Hope the colleague spends her additional time looking at Linked In and Job ads and leaves her toxic workplace.

Wgdici52828 · 09/07/2024 09:13

I live in fear of one day having a colleague like you 🤣

notimagain · 09/07/2024 09:18

In any event the departures boards and flight numbers are almost meaningless because the OP won’t know the airline’s exact recovery plan.

If we’re talking about a daily service and a whole day’s worth of passengers getting disrupted (which was more than possible in this case) everybody who didn’t get on due the hurricane doesn’t necessarily just shuffle back 24 hours and get on the next days flight. Doing that would then leave the next days passengers then stuck without seats on a flight and so the delays would just roll on.

The general principle is airlines try to restrict the disruption to the minimum number of people possible.

That means what normally happens is those actually delayed by the initial event on day one stay disrupted, possibly for several days, until the airline can find capacity to get them out, either on one of their own flights, maybe on a competitors or even in this case connecting Via somewhere in the US with good connections to Europe.

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:55

That's helpful, thank you - it seems to be mostly about whether it's safe to travel there, not back, but it does say that the airports on Jamaica were closed. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt!

What bloody business is it of yours anyway? you are a colleague not her manager
Talk about your business is my business
Does this person know you are stalking their every move?

This is the OP :)

Nanaof1 · 08/07/2024 23:34

😆👏

I just don't see why she didn't rent a canoe and paddle her way home! Missing a day or two of work because of a simple Cat. 5 hurricane that has killed people. So entitled and spoiled! /s 🙄

Sod the canoe, she should have swum home. Lazy cow
I mean, her poor colleague having to take up the slack...
😄

Wexone · 09/07/2024 09:24

I actually am in shock that this is even being asked - I really hope that your colleague sees this or its picked up by the daily mail and quits his or her job on her return if its a colleague reports to HR as this is absolutely shocking

DoIWantTo · 09/07/2024 09:25

Given the amount of devastation caused I’d think they were telling the truth. Could you imagine what it was like if it were to happen here? Strong winds can down power in some areas for days at a time, never mind the kind of havoc it’d wreck on the airports.

It's another poster who only responds to those who agree with her. She wants an echo chamber
They hate it when they are proved wrong/stupid, so go down the garden to eat worms...

AquaLeader · 09/07/2024 09:47

Look carefully at this and you might find the OP's colleague sipping piña colada as OP always suspected.

I fucking hope not. If she is then Christ the poor women should be looking for a new job ASAP who'd want to work in such a toxic environment.

I think the op has got attitude with the way she’s responding to posters here and probably not a nice person to work with surely if you can see there’s a hurricane you’d be able to know it’d be dangerous for planes to fly in that. Let it be. Are you one of those that’ll report every tiny thing but try getting away yourself.

GingerPirate · 09/07/2024 09:53

I think you're right, but I can't see anything - I've been on the live departures board from Kingston for example, and everything seems to be running on time.

Why not believe them?
Do they have a history of lying before?
I would really love to work at your place (not).

zebedeehadapoint · 08/07/2024 21:59

You'll give her the benefit of the doubt? Wow. Check you. How gracious of you.

Who is she even. You’re her colleague not her manager. I bet you’re the first one to falsely report colleagues.
