Should I believe colleague that flight from Jamaica is delayed?

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:40

One of my colleagues was due back from Jamaica on Thursday (11th) and has sent a message to say she will be back early next week as the flights have been messed around because of Hurricane Beryl. I can't find anything online about this, and don't know if she's just decided to stay out longer and leave the rest of us to pick up the pieces or if it's genuine. Does anyone have any information?

@LivingOnAnIsland if your colleague’s extended absence has serious knock on effects for you (e.g won’t be able to meet deadlines, proposed delay of your own leave , service closure or cancellation etc) then maybe seek advice on the Employment board as to how to navigate that? Come at it from a positive problem solving angle?

I think you're right, but I can't see anything - I've been on the live departures board from Kingston for example, and everything seems to be running on time.

Just leave it 😮‍💨

Will you get paid more money for catching her out?

Maybe fly out there yourself and let us know how blustery it is?

You aren't really the nicest colleague are you?

Thanks for the sensible answers, I'm ignoring the idiots.

Do you include yourself in that list?

Another question: is your colleague Jamaican? Or of Jamaican heritage?
By any chance?

Yup. The (potential) racism is SCREAMING in this post.

The first article one comes across clear says that all 3 major airports in Jamaica are closed until at least July 10th

The storm has proved highly destructive so far, with winds of up to 155 mph recorded on Grenada. On Tuesday, Jamaica was declared a ‘disaster zone’ and will remain so for until July 10.
Multiple airports in the region have closed, including all three of Jamaica’s major airports. It’s best to contact your travel provider if you have a trip booked to the Caribbean.

According to the OP the information online is only flights from here so she can’t really trust the colleague. Didn’t you know hurrincanes only effect flights landong not ta
king off.

AquaLeader · 09/07/2024 10:13

I hope this colleague has the sense to go find a job elsewhere.

BowlOfNoodles · 09/07/2024 10:22

If you are not the manager you are being unhinged

It was my first thought unfortunately

FrancisSeaton · 09/07/2024 10:24

You will give her the benefit of the doubt? Who the hell are you?

Bromptotoo · 09/07/2024 10:34

A quick check of airline websites suggest plenty of caution around flights anywhere in the Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico until at least back end of last week.

LivingOnAnIsland · 08/07/2024 21:50

No I didn't miss that - did you miss that I was asking about flights from Jamaica?

So the hurricane hit the island but somehow managed to miss the airport.

YANBU you are being ridiculous.

MrHarleyQuin · 09/07/2024 10:44

You can't necessarily just jump on the next flight out when an airport reopens as everyone whose flight is delayed will be trying to do the same thing.

Over40Overdating · 09/07/2024 10:46

People like @LivingOnAnIsland are the reason I’m working towards self employment. The job market and work environment is bad enough as it is without having to tolerate busybodies like this.

How much time are you spending watching live departures and posting here trying to make your colleagues life miserable rather than doing your own work? That’s where your nose should be.

Anonymouseposter · 09/07/2024 10:47
  1. Are you her manager or a colleague. You have been asked multiple times. 2. Whoever you are why are you wasting time checking departure boards and posting on here. Wouldn’t it be more productive to get on with covering some work?

This is the OP :)
Edited

That's hilarious!

harriethoyle · 09/07/2024 10:54

why won't you say if your her boss or not @LivingOnAnIsland ??

tennesseewhiskey1 · 09/07/2024 10:55

Is your colleague a known liar? Why have you reason to disbelieve her? What is backstory?

Nanny0gg · 09/07/2024 11:03

OneTwoTen · 08/07/2024 22:30

Thank you, it looks like this is what has probably happened

Surely it ought to have been obvious that this is exactly what has happened? How on earth did you imagine it was anything else, given that most of the Caribbean has just been flattened by a hurricane?

And a perfect scenario for extending a holiday...

Confused

The first article one comes across clear says that all 3 major airports in Jamaica are closed until at least July 10th*

I see that’s quite has popped up as a C&P to a recent post. I have no idea of the original source but for info and clarity that is not what happened in reality, maybe it was somebody in the MSM making a worse case guess.

Montego Bay and Kingston have been open for at least a day or two (haven’t got time now to look at data any further back).. The airport authorities actually declared that Montego Bay was supposedly resuming normal operations on the AM of the 5th (local date/time)..whether they did or not and how normal was normal don’t know but it does look as if both airports were busy yesterday (8th) with the likes of JetBlu and other regional and American shift haul operators

…However none of the above means the OP’s colleague would definitely have been able to get a seat out.

CucumberBagel · 09/07/2024 11:19

God, this is why I hated working in a team. The bitching and gossiping and nastiness was unbelievable.

Wheresthebeach · 09/07/2024 11:30

You have no business questioning this unless you are the colleagues line manager.

It's all over the news, so you clearly want to stir up trouble for this colleague by suggesting that they are skiving. Bizarre behaviour.

katseyes7 · 09/07/2024 11:40

We were once on a returning flight from Egypt to the UK when there was an on board medical emergency.
We landed in Italy (Brindisi, I'm pretty sure it was a military airport) and had to stay overnight.
I texted work (police)to let them know we were delayed and l wouldn't be back to work when expected, the only 'query' l had was 'Haha, yeah, April fool?' - l hadn't even realised the date. Besides that, my explanation when l got back to work a couple of days late wasn't even questioned, just 'was the person okay?'
Are you the person's manager, OP?
