The media are a great reason why British politics is broken #justsayin

Pedallleur · 30/06/2024 10:58

Sunaks big fail isn't it. His life has been good despite lack of Sky TV. Elite education, Oxford, Stanford, Goldman Sachs, hedge fund manager, marries well, gets into politics and the top jobs. Chancellor and PM but now it's about to go wrong. He was successful and worked hard, it shouldn't end like this for someone like him. If he was re elected it would be a crowning achievement.

I'm not watching Laura K as watching ds compete in Edinburgh for the England para talent team (on YouTube via the tv).

But reading between heats I am getting a very clear picture of what I'm missing.

You lot are brilliant with words.

That's why I don't want to lose these threads after next week. I enjoy all your writing and it's a great downtime hobby 😂

How is he doing?

Good luck to him!

"A Conservative students’ group has apologised for holding a black-tie dinner a fortnight ago in which members sang a German marching song used by the Nazis during the Second World War and since reclaimed by the far right."

I fail to believe that they didnt know the origins of the song - certainly the person that specifically requested it knew full well.

Tory student group apologises after members ‘danced to Nazi song’

Leaked video footage of a German march played at a Warwick University Conservative Association dinner has raised concern about antisemitism on British campuses

How have I only just found this thread? Some of your ways with words are fabulous.

VoteOutToHelpOut · 30/06/2024 11:08

Also sending good luck to @itsgettingweird's son.

Odd picture to use for that article

Ofcourse they knew what they were doing.

Anyone else get the feeling from the overall MNHQ "debate" with Rishi that we would have gotten better answers had our husbands asked for us ? Not really a high point for a site that makes it's money from women.

Hardly something most young people would be ofay with is it? "Go on, put that banger on from 1940's Germany!"

Slight tangent but as someone else mentioned mis-pronounciation; I keep on hearing people mis-pronouncing dour as do-er. It is an uncommon word and the first time I wondered if it is different in the US, but it has been said twice in my audio book by a Brit now and I want to check I am not going mad. It is pronounced dower, isn't it?

Ddog had a lovely frolick with an old doggy friend we haven't seen since lockdown if you can believe it. They are also keen to oust the Tories. I do often wonder if my dog is as selective with her friends for similar vibes.

RishisLeavingDo · 30/06/2024 11:35

Now you mention it, there definitely is that vibe

I’d say dower but my Scottish friend says do-err.

This demonstrates that Rish! knows what a woman is. I will vote for him.

I haven't even checked the answers tbh - assume they used the word surrender a few times? Tax by the dozen?

I’d say dower but my Scottish friend says do-err.

I find myself wondering things like this more and more - lots of brain fog but also then wondering if I have only read it or heard it and who by etc. The audiobook was a medical professional from Surrey so I wasn't thinking it might be regional, maybe so!

Edited

For reasons I can't explain (although when in doubt, blame Billy Connolly 😀) the word "dour" does seem to be magnetically attracted to "Scots" and "Presbyterian" in speech.

Didn't Gordon Brown get called "dour" at times ?

Is it a Scots word ? (Yes, I could check. But this is the internet, where as we know, no one can make you ....)

InMySpareTime · 30/06/2024 11:44

Dour is a Scots word. It should rhyme with sour.

SerendipityJane · 30/06/2024 11:45

On reflection, maybe MNHQ really hate Rishi too. Certainly by giving him special treatment, they have also given him a lot of rope. And the whole world knows how incompetent his team are. It would have been embarrassingly easy to trick them into thinking that having exclusive access to MN was a good thing.

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2024 10:11

That’s such a good article. I hope the new cabinet have all read it and don’t waste the opportunity for a reset.

cakeorwine · 30/06/2024 12:06

There's one thing about the whole Farage racism thing I don't get.

Farage seems to be saying that it was a set up and the person is an actor. He found that out by looking him up on the internet.

But.

If Channel 4 had decided to set him up, surely it would have been obvious that people would have looked up who he was when it came out and people would have seen he was an actor and would assume it was a set up.

It would have been the first thing they would have done.

I watched the "Man who never was" all about deception. You have to be very careful if you are trying to deceive people. If Channel 4 were trying to deceive people by using an actor, it would have been an easy deception to foil as he could have been looked up.

All of that assumes Farage has a relationship with (a) reality and (b) the truth.

If you remove those assumptions, things fall into place.

RishisLeavingDo · 30/06/2024 12:17

The actor bloke was already campaigning for reform back in April, quite the sting that C4 pulled off

I hope the election is an effective reset on some the extreme right stuff that is creeping into the UK mainstream. A lot of people are very naive on that - the Tory university society does not surprise me. I recall that was what it was like decades ago. I don’t think all Tory activists are racists of course, but there are an appreciable minority. That was obscured by a multicultural cabinet in the last five years but I do not think this element has ever gone away. Britain is very smug about being tolerant; or it couldn’t happen here because of how special we are. I don’t believe it myself. We are like every other country in the world; get the right conditions and racialism will flourish.

Look at France. Macron is challenging Le Pen and effectively saying the far right will mess up government. Well what if he is wrong on that one?
