Lovely explanation of Exit Polls here (yes I thought they were done via clipboards!)

There’s a misconception that there are people with clipboards or iPads outside polling stations asking how you voted.’

Ipsos’ Kieran Pedley explains how the closing exit poll will be calculated on election night.

That is incredibly rude. We are allowed to feel that there are priorities greater than the trans issue in terms of women's rights. You are allowed to believe the opposite. That's fine.

But on July 5th, single issue voters like you will find that the majority of women don't feel as you do. And you will have to accept that, because this is a democracy.

Fascinating - I had no idea! Anyone here had a 2nd secret vote?

IClaudine · 14/06/2024 09:26

I didn't know that about the second ballot either. I wonder if they concentrate on marginal seats?

Zonder · 14/06/2024 09:27

Ah, I see.
No dissent allowed.
How on earth is it wrong to express valid concerns about women's rights?
Christ...
We've gone back decades in the progress made for women's rights
But yeah....it'll be FINE
Ffs

We have talked about this before. You know this. We don't all agree on this thread about trans related issues so it has been agreed that we don't focus on it here. If you can't stick to that then don't think you'll win yourself and your views any brownie points. It will irritate rather than convince.

Zonder · 14/06/2024 09:29

And just to add, I'm not happy with it all being labelled "Women's Rights". Women's rights is far bigger than that and have been eroded by the right wing. So don't assume that because we are not all ditching the labour party for their view on trans that we don't believe in women's rights. I can't see how a Tory vote helps women's rights but I know others disagree.

This is such a helpful series of threads for keeping informed and there's general consensus on so many issues. We have "more in common".

BIossomtoes · 14/06/2024 09:34

Well said Zonder. 🙏

This is the crux of it. For some, women's rights is now about trans, and only about trans. And if you admit to seeing the wider picture, you're an MRA, a TRA or a man. Now that's stifling debate.

These threads aren't a bunch of people Labour fangirling. They contain voters from across the political spectrum. We talk about wider politics all the time. Right now there's an election and so that affects the discussion. After the election, the focus will widen again - expect plenty of criticism of the new government.

Agree with this.

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2024 09:37

Genuinely, I'm sure they will be fine but my trans sibling, wife and son are coming over to the UK for a road trip at election time and I am actually quite concerned for their wellbeing. Haven't shared that thought with them, yet.

MN makes me fear for them if they so much look in the direction of a toilet. Real life perhaps not so much.

Ironically this sibling was constantly misgendered as a child when in their birth sex.

I watched snippets of QT last night (couldn't stomach another Farage debate so swerved that) and had to turn over when they got on to private schools as it was stressing me out. But one audience member (a young woman) pointed out that the whole conversation distracted from discussions about the most needy children in society who deserve the most - I wanted to kiss her.

BIossomtoes · 14/06/2024 09:40

expect plenty of criticism of the new government.

I’ve started already. I’m pissed off with the retention of the two child benefit cap and sticking to current spending plans for a whole term. Sometimes I wish I was more naive because I absolutely love the Green manifesto and would vote for it in a heartbeat if it wasn’t fiscal fantasy.

I have only ever encoutered people with clipboards, had no idea about the second ballot box.

Agreed, but Starmer is standing in the ashes of what this country was before the grab, slash and burn swine got hold of it. Got to attempt to start somewhere. Sticking with current plans for a whole term? Events, dear boy, events.

Today is the 7th anniversary of Grenfell.

The government still have not put protections and provisions in place in response to the disaster.

Working class and back and brown people's deaths do not matter.

Article that summarises all the things Labour should not tidy away.

Bim Afolami on R4 Today this morning sounding very reminiscent of Michael Howard in terms of weeding around "Labour will tax your children" type chat, and sounding vaguely sinister whilst simultaneously urbane

That's why Labour are committing to Hillsborough Law

Well they now have to be chipped.

Although as a wag online pointed out, with cats you are probably better off chipping the owners ...

RafaistheKingofClay · 14/06/2024 10:29

Work hasn’t even started on most of the 3000+ buildings that were identified as having the same cladding as Grenfell. The Tories really dropped the ball on this (probably deliberately).

Yes I think plenty are LibDem, Green and SNP. (Not sure about Plaid?). And some will vote tactically I daresay.
