Wonder what that was about?

tobee · 14/06/2024 10:47

Sorry not doing very well today. Is that a "sign in to read the full story?" Thought it was a breaking news synopsis.

can you précis it please? Can’t face setting up yet another account. When I click it’s just the headline.

tobee · 14/06/2024 10:44

Wonder what that was about?

She featured a picture of her and a local police commander who is not happy and asked her to remove it as it implies the police are backing her.

If I was a party member, I'd want a refund on that. They've had to pulp a lot of printed leaflets.

DuncinToffee · 14/06/2024 10:49

It's about her leaflet using an image of a police officer

But the force and Mr Baldock protested that the image was used without their knowledge and was against electoral rules because it suggested the high ranking officer was backing the Conservative candidate at the general election.

And just to add, I'm not happy with it all being labelled "Women's Rights". Women's rights is far bigger than that and have been eroded by the right wing. So don't assume that because we are not all ditching the labour party for their view on trans that we don't believe in women's rights. I can't see how a Tory vote helps women's rights but I know others disagree.

This is such a helpful series of threads for keeping informed and there's general consensus on so many issues. We have "more in common".

Me too - well said zonder

Bim Afolami on R4 Today this morning sounding very reminiscent of Michael Howard in terms of weeding around "Labour will tax your children" type chat, and sounding vaguely sinister whilst simultaneously urbane

Edited

Bim Afolami freaks me right out. He just doesn't seem genuine, I can almost sense the naked ambition pouring off him..and he keeps getting sent out to defend the indefensible.
Him and the shaved Afghan Chris Philp (love "the week in Tory" insults)

SerendipityJane · 14/06/2024 11:00

"Are women not human ? If you cut them, do they not bleed ?"

We so need a Shakespeare play to deal with this issue.

Neither of them are very bright. Afolami is almost certain to lose his seat so he won’t be troubling us for much longer.

mibbelucieachwell · 14/06/2024 11:17

@BIossomtoes I'm the same re the Green's manifesto - their aims are more aligned with mine than any other party. BUT they're in favour of Scottish independence, which I feel is a terrible idea in principle and in practice. And their green science seems dubious - my understanding is that the most sustainable form of energy production is probably nuclear power. Unfortunately I feel they alienate people who are sympathetic to the need to address climate change but don't want to for example go vegan or give up their car. And people worry, understandably that their pockets would be raided by the Green Party.

But their own ambition on the tax system seems so much more progressive than the labour party's. It's such a frustration.

Hmmm, I'm off to read economists' take on their fiscal plans......

mibbelucieachwell · 14/06/2024 11:26

Right , according to the IFS the Green Party is overestimating their revenue take from some of their measures. It seems to think all the parties are overestimating their revenues from their new measures however.

Otoh, it approves of some of their plans.

And it doesn't take into account the long term savings that would result in better public services and green benefits.

Childbirth is another area where Americanisation has crept into the debate. We've never had medicalised childbirth to the extent the US do, and I think it is reasonable to campaign against that and for women to see birth as a natural event.
In the UK though it's almost gone too far the other way and women are having to fight for c-sections when they have a good reason to want one.

The problem with natural childbirth is it leaves too many ways for obstetricians to get sued.

So for the good of the insurers, it makes sense to whip the baby out in the least damages friendly way.

That's my understanding having talked with US colleagues over the years.

The opening scene of The Meaning of Life was not a satire.

Bigcoatlady · 14/06/2024 12:24

The problem with the Green position is that is not stuff for a manifesto. The kind of care available to women in childbirth shouldn't really be political - it should be lead by evidence on what is safest and what women themselves want.

The problem is who wants evidence based policy ? No one, that's who.

Not quite no one! We haven't all had enough of experts 😂

I couldn’t agree more.

Well we certainly have had enough of exports.

The problems with evidence based policies is they ignore "da feelz" that are so important to [some] people. Harm based drugs laws would immediately make alcohol and tobacco things of the past, for example.

The there's the paedo paradox. Children are 1000x more likely to be abused by someone they know and see regularly than some random bush-dwelling figment of MN imagination. However try and get that one through without being mobbed.

Climate change ? Well we had the solution. In our grasp. But would rather boil with our feelz intact than risk actually exposing them to scrutiny.

CassieMaddox · 14/06/2024 12:45

What was the solution to climate change? Do I even want to know???

Not really. No one else did.

Bigcoatlady · 14/06/2024 12:48

Climate change is a slightly different order of issue - the structural changes needed to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels require political agreement on investment.

Whereas in the context of declining birthrates whether a woman whether a woman opts for a very safe surgical procedure or prefers, all other things being equal i.e. vertex delivery etc, to have a vaginal birth is only a matter for her and her treating team. The costs ot the NHS are pretty marginal compared to the costs of any birth trauma, physical or psychological that may result from a distressing birth experience (from c-section or vaginal delivery).

Well you need to accept the evidence the climate is changing to start with. No point in looking for a policy if you can't see a problem.

MaybeNotBob · 14/06/2024 12:54

I see no climate change...

Well indeed and that's the problem with the Reform manifesto. If you want a political party that neither wants to tell women how to birth their babies or denies climate change you still have quite a few options to choose from.
