I am just reading your thread about Labour's 80 new rape courts pledge Cassie, I don't know how you manage to stay calm Flowers

imho the vast majority on those sorts of threads are very pro Tory, using TWAW as a means to attack Labour.

Impervious to basic facts and in particular, like to lie about Labour will bring in self ID.

True colours well and truly on display there. It’s a shame it’s tucked away and not on the GE board.

With this and their promise to halve violence against women and girls I’m confused.

I thought Labour hated women and were a danger to us. Even though they don’t know what we are.

BREAKING: Douglas Ross is to resign as leader of the Scottish Conservatives

x.com/politlcsuk/status/1800089857085112806?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

His copy of the newspaper I take, must have landed a few days later than mine...

CassieMaddox · 10/06/2024 10:49

What is this thing with Ross about?
I'm assuming there's something the Conservatives are pledging that he can't support, but am a bit confused

He was basically reminded he pinky promised not to stand as a Westminster MP while he was an MSP.

So he's dumped the shit MSP role. Hopefully he'll lose.

He is an MP, and MSP, also gets paid to ref football, some dubious claiming of expenses for flights, and I think has moved constituency to one that he has more chance of winning, probably against the wishes of the local party.

user8800 · 10/06/2024 10:52

I read the times article at the weekend

I remain scared of labours plans for self ID

Calling me a tory won't change my mind 🙄

mibbelucieachwell · 10/06/2024 10:53

Ross is already an MSP and the leader of the Scottish conservatives. Nevertheless he ousted the incumbent of a Scottish seat ( Aberdeen North East) in the Westminster parliament to stand there himself on the basis that the current MP is too ill to stand. This is disputed by the current MP. He had also previously pledged not to stand for any seat in Westminster.

He also has a part time job as a football referee. Yesterday (iirc) it was alleged that he claimed parliamentary expenses for travel to and from matches.

Labour aren't planning self ID and it's right wing scaremongering from the Conservatives who think it's a point of difference.

Labour are planning to reform the GRA and as part of that, make the final sign off for a GRC come from one registrar, rather than a panel. It appears to be to make the process quicker and less resource intensive so benefits all round.

At the moment 96% of applications get through so the planned changes are not going to make much difference either way I don't think.

I'm happy to discuss further on a different thread - we could hop onto the Labour and Women thread on the GE board if you like? But this thread has an agreement not to discuss as it can derail us.

Meanwhile I am now seeing a potential Tory count of 37 seats being bandied about. And not on Fruitloopnet, I give you ....

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13509231/conservatives-election-wipeout-labour-majority-mail-sunday-poll.html

I think this might be spin to get Tories to turn out and voters to vote other than Labour.

The polling company carefully caveats that the projection is based on a crude uniform swing, and should be treated with caution.

The new line seems to be about Labour having no effective opposition and the risk of the "far left" so the right wing press might be playing up to that.

I'm more scared of the fact that the Conservatives have made rape defacto legal and are releasing violent domestic abusers from prison early.

I don't trust labour to keep women and girls safe.
I don't trust any of them.

Aaargh I'm so torn. Have to keep reminding myself that reducing VAWG is my priority

prettybird · 10/06/2024 11:19

Dross is also only going to resign an MSP if he doesn't win his stolen seat in the GB election.

Although he's supposedly going to step down as leader of the Scottish Conservatives on 5 July whatever happens.

But who knows Hmm

Agreed.
It's a ploy imo

Scruffily · 10/06/2024 11:21

Sunak is apparently trying to limit the damage he has done by planning a series of tax and economy announcement including yet another tax giveaway.

It's amazing how much money he has suddenly found he has to spare which apparently hasn't been available to fund maintaining schools, funding SEND provision, funding care provision, reducing the court backlog, improving prison capacity so they don't have to release convicted people early, to say nothing of little problems like ameliorating child poverty.

The problem is this could be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Sunaks D-Day "misstep" has is a Rubicon moment for a lot of older Tories and I don't think they like being treated like the usual suspects and ignored, belittled and told to "get over it" in the Tory client press.

I can imagine quite few Tories I have known over the years reading that and thinking "Good, what I can I do to help ?". Which may mean simply abstaining.
