Parliamentary elections- first round on 30th June. I think second round on 2nd July. So fast!

So what does that mean for Macron, does he stay regardless of the outcome, or go if defeated?

Evenstar · 09/06/2024 21:38

A French lady has explained on Twitter, Macron remains as President, there could be a change of Government and Prime Minister https://x.com/annettedittert/status/1799887187426578644?s=61&t=xKCXjKa1-S6Ks0nSd_LXGg

Notonthestairs · 09/06/2024 21:42

He stays in place I think - depends on whether I've interpreted this thread correctly!

Super helpful, thanks!!

This thread about the European election result is helpful

https://x.com/CasMudde/status/1799885747064873035?t=XZdBuDu-OGturSXkVHcxqQ&s=19

First take:

Far-right parties (seem to) underperform in Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania & Sweden... Greece, Netherlands & Spain not remarkable either.

Sure, the far right wins, with new record seats, but no major victory overall.

Helpful clip from Sky News breaking down the EU election results.

Suella Braverman is making her views known about Farage according to tomorrow's papers.

Can you guess what she thinks about him?

Notonthestairs · 09/06/2024 22:33

I'm guessing she thinks he's a true conservative.
Am I close?

BestIsWest · 09/06/2024 22:50

Re Macron, I think he remains president for another 3 years. I believe the thinking is either France rejects the hard right in a parliamentary election, or if the right win, they make such a mess in the next three years that the electorate rejects them at the presidential elections ( not sure if Macron can stand again or not though).

DuncinToffee · 09/06/2024 22:55

Braverman is a Frarage fan, is she declaring her love, joining the cult?

@BestIsWest it seems there is a limit of two consecutive terms for French presidents since the law was changed in 2008 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Term_limits_in_France

MrTiddlesTheCat · 10/06/2024 06:28

I'm so pleased with the EU vote here in Sweden. We dabbled with the tories (moderaterna) and nutjobs (sverigedemokraterna) at the last election but everyone has quickly realised how shit they are. So back to socialism we go (socialdemokraterna). Hurrah!

IClaudine · 10/06/2024 07:22

That is good news @MrTiddlesTheCat .

Zonder · 10/06/2024 07:57

Can anyone shed any light on why Ed Davey is so up for getting the silly photo shoots? I'm guessing it's because he has no other way of getting airspace since it's all being given to Farage now but I wondered if there's any other reason?

Is he showing he's up for being on some game shows on TV post election?

Piggywaspushed · 10/06/2024 08:17

I genuinely think that's what he's like. I think he is a man who is interested in people and very at ease around them.

I think he also wants to position himself as being the human amongst the leaders.

Notonthestairs · 10/06/2024 08:20

Yes, its pretty much the only way the L/Ds get any coverage. And as Piggy says it Davey seems to enjoy being around people.

The media seem to think its much healthier for the nation to obsess over every fart coming from Farage.

Nobody will be surprised by Braverman's desire to bring Farage in. The article in the New Yorker 'What Have Fourteen Years of Conservative Rule Done to Britain by Sam Knight concludes with Braverman's pal (the one she leaked top secret information to) John Hayes saying that the Conservatives need to be more Conservative because that is what wins outside of university towns and cities.

I'm not sure that is correct (!) but either way I noted there was no reference to making people's lives better, just a desire to win votes.

They've dropped any illusion of wanting to be the voice for the centre.

Piggywaspushed · 10/06/2024 08:24

They need to read Jon Sopel's book If Only They Didn't Speak English. It's a common mistake to assume Americans are like the British and vice versa.

She has gone further than that, divorced her husband marrying Nigel & together they will rule the U.K.

Sorry for the double post

DuncinToffee · 10/06/2024 08:34

I asked the Conservative Party press office to explain why Richard Holden was dodging selection questions by talking about Emily Thornberry instead

The response is remarkable

From now on, I think all Tories need to answer every question 'Emily Thornberry said'.
