It's frustrating to me that education was not mentioned except by Rayner in her closing speech.

Flynn did get a round of applause when he mentioned no uni fees though!

I think I may have a slight crush on Carla.

Yeah I really liked her calm style.

itsgettingweird · 07/06/2024 21:16

Did anyone see what actually looked liked genuine respect between Rayner and Mordaunt at the end when they shook hands?

CassieMaddox · 07/06/2024 21:17

I thought they looked like they were enjoying debating at one point. Also Stephen Flynn. You must get very used to leaving the politics at the door in the HoC.

Oh! Oh! That's my ex student there!!

Well done piggy 👏
That's inspirational teaching right there

Did Farage drive Mordaunt to the debate tonight?

They’ve just run a segment on Newsnight about Sunak leaving the D Day commemoration, the backing music was Save A Prayer by Duran Duran.

They went on to say that Sunak has now lost Matthew Parris of The Times who has always supported him.

Mytholmroyd · 07/06/2024 22:56

And James Mitchinson editor of the Yorkshire Post who says "I have taken the brickbats for suggesting, on occasion, I feel a pang of sympathy for the Prime Minister, but I’m afraid any scintilla of that has now dissolved in disgust"

😂
Love it when they tear each other apart

Just watched Hignify (for lack of any other satire). Pathetic. Isn't there any decent satire these days? I miss Spitting Image.

Are there not election purdah rules applied atm?

prettybird · 07/06/2024 23:22

They were careful to comply with election purdah guidelines on HIGNFY: as well as including the names of all the candidates in Clacton, they also put on to the scrolling titles the names of all the local pubs, after mentioning the Weatherspoons Grin

Desperate and stupid

The plans would include "unilaterally reversing" the expansion of the Ulez clean air scheme in London, and giving communities referendums on low-traffic neighbourhoods.

@tobee there are, I remember at one election there was a Spitting Image special immediately after the polls closed. The Margaret Thatcher puppet sang Tomorrow Belongs To Me from Cabaret 🤣

I've been out this evening. Can anyone summarise the debate for me, other than Mordaunt shouted, pointed and had bouncy hair?

Scruffily · 08/06/2024 00:05

DuncinToffee · 07/06/2024 08:49

He has Kuenssberg on Newscast defending him

"With prime ministers duty calls all the time and sometimes the duty isn't world leader stuff..."

"Prime ministers are trying to run the country as well as an election campaign, that's a challenge [Starmer] doesn't have"

Duty? Coming back for an ITV recording which even they say could have happened at any other time? Doesn't she think Biden, Macron and Scholz had countries to run?

Yes, that was one of the few funny bits!
I do understand about purdah, but there was almost no mention of Trump either. Hignify is a poor imitation of its previous self now. I also meant more generally: I remember the height of Spitting Image 'the vegetables? Oh, they'll have what I'm having' & yes, the 'tomorrow belongs to me' sketch from when I was a 6th former running around in political Tshirts. Nostalgia?

prettybird · 08/06/2024 00:25

I still remember the excellent Spitting Image episode on election night 1992 Sad

I was away on an NHS Senior Management training course in the Lake District (had had to organise a proxy vote). We were all hoping for a Labour victory Sad

I hadn't noticed this post before I just posted. This is the episode I was referring to from Election Night 1992. It sent a chill down my spine Sad

I remember the GE when the exit poll had been announced Rory Bremner came on and did his Paddy Pantsdown impression. I laughed hysterically. I mean it was funny but my reaction was more the release of tension, and realising I'd been missing the topical comedy.

Evenstar · 08/06/2024 05:51

The Spitting Image special was 1987 apologies for the poor quality, but I can only find an audio version elsewhere https://fb.watch/szD7Ajw-A-/?

newnamethanks · 08/06/2024 06:18

At the end of the debate, all participants were shaking hands with each other apart from Farage, who stood, alone and ignored, at his podium. Hoping the same applies at Clacton.

Piggywaspushed · 08/06/2024 07:16

Sunk has posted on Twitter, congratulating Penny and repeating the £2094 line.

He obviously thinks if he adds £94 it makes it sound more true.
