Really interesting polling by Ipsos for the FT showing that more voters would prefer higher spending on public services (37%) than personal tax cuts (30%)

These findings cut against efforts by both parties to persuade the public that they will not push the tax burden higher

The next journalist to talk to Truss, Mogg, Kruger etc need to ask them if they continue to support Trump and do not trust the American legal system.

Today's @ONS stats show the devastating impacts of extreme poverty and deprivation on children's life chances.

The mortality rate for infants living in the most deprived areas in England was almost 3x higher than in the least deprived.

This is not okay.

Be interesting to see how the UK media handles the Trump verdict. I would say imagine the UK prime minster having to deal with a criminal. And then I remembered it's a UK prime minister, so he's already got a few in his cabinet.

More of a dilemma for a former officer of the court, Sir Keir Starmer, I suspect.

The Pantiles?

Seemed a bit rundown and unloved last time I visited.

Starmer in his previous career has presumably had practice dealing with unsavoury characters in a professional and non-judgemental manner.

You forgot Farage. Will he suddenly become "available" to lead Reform ?

Notonthestairs · 31/05/2024 12:28

Farage has already indicated the American legal system is rigged. He can't let go of the gravy train.

Ooh just bumped into Lisa Nandy canvassing on my road my the perspective Labour candidate, went to the local meeting last night was very well attended & although it will be a struggle I think gaining this new constituency it’s not totally hopeless quest they do appear very organised, the candidate speaks well has a bit of humour & very energetic.

IClaudine · 31/05/2024 14:01

Starmer has said DA is free to go forward as a candidate.

Is he being weasely with words though as it doesn't mean she will be selected?

ETA: A senior Labour source has clarified that this means Abbott will be Labour's candidate in the constituency of Hackney North and Stoke Newington.

Apologies for doubting you Keir!

With the projected/posited/expected majority Labour are looking at, having the odd PITA in a seat or two really shouldn't be "a thing".

There is no way a future Labour administration will be treading on eggshells around some paper tigers who write for the Daily Wail and are treated as if they run the show.

That sounds encouraging!

Funny how the media didn't care when the Conservatives deselected many of their MPs in the last election. Unless they completely agreed to tow the line on Brexit

Incidentally, that list of parachuted Tory candidates I posted was treating Wellingborough as a winnable seat.

David Goss, the prime minister’s deputy political secretary, became the latest high profile figure from Downing Street to be selected for a winnable seat in Wellingborough and Rushden, recently lost to Labour in a gruelling by-election.

If the polls the Tory press are pumping out are using that sort of measure, then it's possible things are far worse than even they are able to let on.

I just said the same to my DP. All those long-standing and (with hindsight) relatively decent Tory MPs shafted by Johnson.

Brexit broke the tories. And the bitter irony is, they were warned.

But that showed what a strong leader Johnson was and that he meant business when he said he would get Brexit done.
Whereas what Starmer is doing is showing he is too weak to face any opposition in his party and will be a weak Prime Minister.

Surely that is obvious?

SerendipityJane · 31/05/2024 14:31

But that showed what a strong leader Johnson was and that he meant business when he said he would get Brexit done.

Alternatively, Johnson was full of shit, had no intention of getting Brexit done and indeed, did not get Brexit done.

The fact he he isn't even a candidate in his own bristling -with-Brexit-success government tells us how history and his story are being written.

Nonsense Johnson was brought down by malign forces that are jealous of anyone who is successful because success is anti-woke.

BIossomtoes · 31/05/2024 14:39

I thought it was being ambushed by a cake that brought Johnson down. First cake, then lettuce, what will finally be Sunak’s downfall?

DuncinToffee · 31/05/2024 14:47

Sunak was parachuted in to an ultra safe seat in 2019

Probably with a jar of caviar in hand
