£2000 figure now being disputed on R4 news.

Emily Thornberry explaining why it's wrong and another chap explaining why this hasn't been 'signed off' by the treasury and why it's a '' grubby" process.

mibbelucieachwell · 05/06/2024 13:18

Lord O' Donnell. He was absolutely furious.

Its interesting isn't it. Because he clearly is very effective at bringing people together and getting them to work on shared priorities.
I think that is more important than "winning" a debate but unfortunately based on Boris I'm not sure the electorate agree.

Yes, I reckon he would be great to work for, just not good at speaking.
I like Jess Phillips though and I know she annoys a lot of people (personally I feel if she were a man more would like her but she gets a harder time because she's an 'outspoken' woman). She nails points and has wit too.

Leaving this here as it had todays internet winner comment:

"The revolution will be pasteurized"

I am sure Gil Scott-Heron would approve

Nah, I saw one earlier that said 'Lactose meets intolerance'. That's today's winner.

Obviously the Tory top team gambled with saying the £2000 tax thing knowing full well it would stick even though it's absolute bollocks. And the effort to deny, and listen to the denial, involves much more work for the average voter. Why would the Tories care about it being rubbish? This is exactly the sort of shit Levido gets his money for.

The only gamble they have taken is the backlash from Labour, Civil Servants etc creates more noise.

We shall see

Scruffily · 05/06/2024 13:52

I don't see why Sunak is so impressed with himself over furlough. It's what virtually every country did, it's all a part of absolutely standard disaster planning. Sunak didn't invent the idea, he didn't plan it - it was planned long ago and the plan was kept under regular review. As soon as anyone thought lockdown was a possibility, civil servants got the files out and presented them to him, and he okayed them being presented to cabinet. He didn't really perform much more of a function than being a spokesman for briefings prepared by other people.

Honourable mention maybe ?

GSH appeals to my anarcho-punk-hippy days. You know. When peace loving anti racists were quite ready to mix it with the National Front to the sound of "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais".

It ... was .... Madness

Office For Statistics Regulation is now looking into the claims too

Good @Evenstar Sadly the lies have got their boots on and are stomping all over MN today. The scaremongering about pensioners paying a few quid in tax is getting a good airing.

It's like the £3.5M on the side of the bus Brexit lie... Obvious. But, if you lie big enough & often enough, some will believe it. The Tories are desperate.

See Starmer missed a trick there going for the Eat Out To Help out and how it prolonged the lockdown and is having repercussions now on long term sickness numbers.

mibbelucieachwell · 05/06/2024 14:25

Also the furlough scheme was widely condemned as being so rough around the edges that it failed to scrutinise applicants properly and has had to write off billions in false claims.

BIossomtoes · 05/06/2024 14:25

I don’t think he missed a trick at all. We don’t want to keep rehashing the past. I’m really not interested in more debate about what happened four years ago. The one thing Sunak got right last night is that we should be focusing on the future.

I wonder if this was influenced by the heavy posting by a few individuals...

MN really has no business releasing that sort of announcement unless and until it has done some very rigorous checks behind the scenes.

Even with rigorous checks it’s about as accurate as Sunak’s £2000. I’m really cross about it.

The Spectator have run the Tories’ figures and it’s not good news for the Prime Miniature 🤣

There is a reason that people put the publishing of the YouGov survey on Monday in their calendars.

In the same way absolutely no one put "MN publish their ruminations on a bit of TV last night" into theirs.

Would serve him right to lose.

How many people not in Rish! (or Keirs) constituency are going to change their vote based on this ? In real numbers. not Express stylee fluffybucks.

It didn't change my mind

Not voting for Braverman even if Sunak suddenly becomes an esteemed leader.

And I really like our local Labour candidate which helps me vote for them!
