The tories really are like the army of darkness ☠️

He reminded Ministers that they were not to suggest those costings as being produced by the Civil Service and Sunak totally ignored him.

Sheer bloody lies.

That's the bit that gets me.

He's told not to say something and I assume because it can be refuted as facts as are just paper calculations of predictions based on assumptions.

Sunak ignores this and uses it as his only sound bite for half the debate.

So he effectively (hopefully) has totally undermined himself and the Tory party by stating facts over something that has come from their own SPads and not the LP itself.

And we are expected to trust him that his plan is working.

I don’t think he missed a trick at all. We don’t want to keep rehashing the past. I’m really not interested in more debate about what happened four years ago. The one thing Sunak got right last night is that we should be focusing on the future.

Of course Sunak doesn't want to look at his parties record in Government.

Funny how he wants to "look forward" yet loves to bring up furlough and his parents NHS roots but Liz Truss is the "past" and as for his fine for breaching LD.......

I don't think we should be helping him.

SerendipityJane · 05/06/2024 16:58

It was said a while ago - and I see nothing that argues to the contrary - that both the Tories and GOP aren't about governing, but merely preventing anyone else from governing.

Sunaks approach could almost be précised as "Look at all the things labour hasn't been able to do since we've been squatting in parliament"

MN really has no business releasing that sort of announcement unless and until it has done some very rigorous checks behind the scenes.

Exactly. The very fact that so many new members have flooded on to the threads in the last few days will have skewed things.

I felt Sunak was the better speaker , less waffle , but overeall it was like pistols at dawn at times.
Most conservatives I know and work with won't change their mind. There are more shy conservatives than people think too, but then I do live in a 'blue ' area with a big majority for our MP so it's skewed on that front.
I think these debates will hurt labour more than the tories , but only my opinion. Especially if they keep on about the 2k a year tax rises.. which the PM said about three times last night.
Starmer did look shifty , but might have been the pressure of it all tb to him.
Sunak did hustings two years ago and knows the drill a lot more , better briefed maybe.

I heard ti mentioned this morning that Sunak is use to debate. The fighting to be heard.

Starmer is a barrister. He's use to time to get his argument across and a judge presiding over it - and when a judge says "stop" the person speaking stops.

He needs to learn how to debate effectively.

IClaudine · 05/06/2024 14:06

Good @Evenstar Sadly the lies have got their boots on and are stomping all over MN today. The scaremongering about pensioners paying a few quid in tax is getting a good airing.

Edited

Martin Lewis showed a great expectation of this today.

You have always paid tax on state pension. It's just that the pension has always been below the personal allowance.

If your state and private pension goes above the personal allowance you pay the tax as normal.

So they are planning on raising state pension above the personal threshold. Under today's policy and rules you'd pay tax on that. It's not new!

Notonthestairs · 05/06/2024 17:19

Yes @IClaudine I am beginning to have some significant concerns (appreciate I am well behind a lot of others on this and not very knowledgeable in this area!). Not quite sure what MN can do about it though.

tobee · 05/06/2024 17:44

I wish someone would say to Sunak next time he says "I have a plan"; "ok, what are the plans?" And get him to tell us how well all his myriad plans have gone so far.

tobee · 05/06/2024 17:47

Do the people prepping Starmer need to up their game?

Do the people prepping Starmer need to up their game?

Yes they do. I used to do media training for senior managers and he was really poorly prepared. There’s no excuse for the next debate - they know what Sunak’s tactics are and where he’ll try to land the punches, Starmer needs to be rehearsed again and again, he needs to be much slicker.

Edited to add that they should have analysed Sunak’s performance from the leadership debates and used those to inform Starmer’s training.

CassieMaddox · 05/06/2024 17:53

I think Starmer played a blinder.
Less than 10% of voters watched last night, yet he's managed to make the news today all about how Sunak lied about the figures and has the evidence to justify calling him a liar. He wouldn't have been able to do that so effectively in the cut and thrust of the debate so keeping his powder dry probably the right option
Sunak won't be able to bring that up again now either without looking like an idiot.

Well played imo

BIossomtoes · 05/06/2024 17:57

Yes, the tax issue’s gone well but that’s basically down to the Treasury letter not any political skill.

EffieeBriest · 05/06/2024 18:01

Anybody listen to 5live Call Nicki this morning ? Really interesting and actually made me feel less gloomy.
There were 2 callers who were both Tories and clearly loved Sunak’s performance. Every other caller preferred Starmer’s calm measured answers, described Sunak as rude and the archetypal braying public schoolboy. Knowing that the BBC strives to be balanced, I can only presume they didn’t hear from anyone prepared to support Sunak.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 05/06/2024 18:02

But Starmer had the letter before the debate and so chose to let Sunak have plenty of rope.

OK, I didn’t know that.

Interesting

and the reply from @BIossomtoes

MrsMurphyIWish · 05/06/2024 18:20

I agree with @CassieMaddox .

My Tory MP posted on our local FB page about the debate and quoted the £2000 tax rise. Cue lots of people posting links to the letter and various news outlets and calling him a liar. He then turned off comments.

I really hope Mishal Hussain pulls Sunak up on this in the next debate.

Tories are struggling to find enough candidates

lol. Don’t worry you won’t have to actually be an MP we just need to put your name down so we don’t look desperate.

Actually that's a good interpretation of it.

Maybe the barrister in him doesn't make him good at debating.

But it probably makes him good at forensically allowing lies to be drawn out.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/06/2024 18:55

Was going to flag up the reply to this that said Sunak’s wife, but the simplicity of the one line community note under it genuinely just made me lol.

He had the letter yesterday 😂
It was a Sunak trap that Sunak fell in head first.
